I'm in tears. Maybe I'm just emotional but can't believe how much the show means to me

And the ending... tidy!

Absolutely brilliant TV- not a dud moment!!

pizzaHeart · 26/12/2024 01:48

I just watched it on BBC iplayer, cried my eyes out. It was the right ending. I’m glad that it’s ended like this, rather than Smithy and Nessa having sex and Sonia finding out or anything similar.

I felt that Neil the baby didn’t go to Southampton because it was in a way “adults issue” . Only people who witnessed Smithy and Nessa relationship over years went to Southampton. Neil didn’t want his dad to marry Sonia but he wasn’t involved in any discussions about this and he didn’t know about Nessa’s proposal and other details. So when the scene happened between Sonia and Smithy those who understood and knew just got up and went.

Watching it in NZ— nearly burst into tears when they shook hands.

Tidy.

I’m so glad the vast majority of people on the thread loved it, I thought it was amazing!

first laugh out loud moment for me was right at the beginning when Nessa said she had worked at the arcade for 47 years 😂 also thought it was so funny when Pam was planning her new life for when Mick died ( after a respectable grieving time of course ) and said she had been to view apartments!

when Neil the baby was singing the song I saw a look on Smithy’s face and I said to ds” he’s not going to marry her” and 2 minutes later all hell broke loose. This is when I started feeling really emotional and by the end I had tears streaming down my face. That really surprised me because I didn’t realise how emotionally invested I was. Gutted to not find out about the fishing trip. Any theories?

I enjoyed it, it was well written but it freaked me out a little seeing how much some of the cast had aged - and some better than others. We were all freaked out by Dawn's cheekbones Grin

I agree with this. The changes in some of the actors was a bit distracting but the actress that played Dawn has had a fair bit of work done and looks like a different person.

The whole point of the fishing trip story/joke was to never find out it wouldn't of ever been written as the story never existed

If you watch it again Stacey quickly asks Pete as she's running from the wedding venue..

Nah, Ruth Jone's loves him and that's a good enough recommendation for me.

That’s exactly what I think! How can he be the arsehole everyone says he is if Ruth Jones, Harry Styles and Larry Lamb love him? 😂

AllEndeavour · 26/12/2024 07:26

I think i preferred the end if series 3. I just can't see Nessa and Smithy as a couple, going places together or having anything in common other than liking takeaways and sharing a son. I think i would have preferred the special to focus on their lives with kids and family deamas from that.
Absolutely loved Mick's speech at the stag do though, that was very emotional - Loves it, I did.

I put it on for my parents who wanted to watch it but after 45 minutes I couldn't take any more and had to turn over. I've never liked the programme, I've never found it funny or interesting, and the special was just awful. I don't identify with any of the overdone characters, and really don't get why it's so popular.

Sadcafe · 26/12/2024 07:40

Never watched a single episode, seen clips but just doesn’t appeal

CarefulN0w · 26/12/2024 07:48

I loved it. Was worried it wouldn't be good enough, but should have had more trust in the writing. It's not like a series with changing writers, Jones and Corbyn have always delivered character driven comedy.

It was the perfect ending. And it is the end - the will they won't they ended with yes they bloody did. Tidy.

westisbest1982 · 26/12/2024 07:51

I thought it was a bit on the shit side, like the previous Christmas special. Much too long and lacking in humour and tension. It was boring in places - the hen snd stag parties - and I didn't like the clunky and preachy bit when Sonia told the stripper to stop stripping. I think Ruth and James couldn't think of what to do with Dave and Gwen this time round so put them together and maybe it was also a way to pad out the runtime.

It should have ended after the third series.

So you stopped your parents watching after 45 mins because you weren't enjoying it?

Lookingtodate · 25/12/2024 23:32

Dave and Gwen???? Felt like they shoehorned him in. 5 years what's her face and smithy engaged did I miss the explanation for such a long engagement?

Reality. They couldn't start where they left off. Neil the baby has grown up in that time and everyone else has aged. You just have to suspend disbelief on the long engagement.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/12/2024 08:01

Aspargar · 25/12/2024 23:30

I thought it was a good ending.

However I don’t like how they made Nessa and smithy the protagonists the last few years. It’s not a storyline I’m emotionally invested in. It’s Gavin n Stacey, not smithy n Nessa.

Also they said once you see it, you will see why they won’t make anymore- but I thought to myself there’s so many stories to tell!

Id love to see Stacey as a MIL, she’d be as mad a Pam. Gavin n Stacey moving to Essex to be closer to Pam and Mick who are getting older etc. Brynn meeting someone, Neil the baby getting a GF etc.

Leave it a few years but they could do back …

It was always really about Nessa and Smithy.

AnImaginaryCat · 26/12/2024 08:05

Just tell yourself that they had a long engagement because Sonia wanted Snithy to buy her a house first and also because she wanted a particular venue that was booked until 2024.

Not the first series they weren’t. It was centred on Gavin n Stacey but that changed series 2 and 3.

I think it was always meant to be about them. A very slow burn.

I've always thought this was a deliberate choice when James Corden and Ruth Jones (possibly) realised that Gavin and Stacey were too dull as characters to sustain multiple series'.

I think it was always meant to be about them. A very slow burn.

I think it's always been a nice ensemble cast but when smithy said last night something f about Leicester Square I think it's been always about the four and when I think back.some.of the best TV was with the four. The chemistry when they got in the black cab together i felt showed that actually this is where the four are happiest, in each others company.

I disagree smithy and Nessa wouldn't be together. That was what was poignant at the hen when Nessa knew Smithy's worse fear. They clearly truly know and accept each other.

Agree one of my favourite bits was when Nessa said she'd been singing songs and that to Bryn!

Overall I loved it and feels like it finished well.

SophWin · 26/12/2024 08:21

Loved it. Laughed, cried, over poignant.

Felt like the end of an era. My adult DS’s were with me. They bought me the DVD’s over the years, such was the love!

Corden and Jones have stated several times - even when the first series was airing - that’s it’s not a show about Gavin and Stacy, it’s a show about Gavin and Stacy’s loved ones.

My favourite fact is that it’s based on two of JC friends in real life who met at work over the phone - and as they didn’t think the show would be the hit it has been they don’t bother changing the names, so there is actually a real life Gavin and Stacy out there.
