New drama starting next sun and e2 Monday

6 parts - to me it reminds me of the film of the thief with Leo - catch me if you can

Joan is set in the brash and aspirational world of 1980s London and stars Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner as notorious real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington.

The six-part series is from writer Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson) and helmed by award-winning director Richard Laxton (The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (www.whattowatch.com/features/the-thief-his-wife-and-the-canoe-release-date-cast-plot-trailer-and-all-you-need-to-know)).

It's based on Joan’s memoirs detailing her extraordinary life from petty offender to criminal mastermind.

"I'm so excited to be bringing Joan Hannington’s fascinating life story to screen in Joan," says Sophie Turner.

"She's one of the most notorious figures in the criminal underworld of London, earning her the nickname The Godmother.

A woman who goes between her thriving and daring career as a jewel thief, all whilst trying to get her daughter back from social services, we see a mother in despair swept up in the exhilarating world of crime."

Joan begins with Joan in her twenties in a disastrous marriage to a violent man Gary. When Gary goes on the run, she seizes the moment to leave her old life along with her four-year-old daughter, Debbie.

Inspired by her desire to care for Debbie and create a secure home for her daughter, Joan makes some heart-breaking decisions as she sets her sights on a better life.

Making full use of her sharp intelligence, charm, and her talent for impersonation and performance, we follow the twists and turns in Joan’s life, the ups and downs, the heartache and the joy.

Adopting new identities and making new acquaintances along the way, Joan becomes a masterful jewel thief. She embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes journey that challenges her every limit, driven by her desire to care for her daughter and create a secure home for them both.

According to Red magazine last month there was supposed to have been a film made about Joan Hannington years ago but it fell through and both Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna were fighting for the role.

Looks good, better than the usual basic ITV stuff, but I detest watching ads so I think I'll wait a while until something else appears which will justify spending the £5.99 to watch ad-free.

I only watch TV on my laptop so have to watch the crappy ads on ITVX - there's no avoiding them, unless I pay for the Premium service.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/09/2024 16:22

Ah @westisbest1982 Same if I watch on phone or laptop

They are annoying but I go for a Wee or make a drink when ads start

JenniferBooth · 29/09/2024 21:40

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/09/2024 21:41

I really enjoyed this. Wasn't sure if I would

The music was great. My era.

. Her love for her daughter Kelly was so touching when she left her in the ss. Is that what people did then ?

Loved the fact it was filmed around Kent /beach's. Looked familiar

Clever to learn diamond talk from a jeweller - but pervy Bernard !!

Must have been an easier way to steal the diamonds rather then Swallowing and pooing them out

Why she didn't tuck them down her bra as she was just walking out of the shop anyway

She should have stayed in the job for longer as obvious she stole the Diamonds and did a runner

Boisie seemed a nice man tho will be be her lover or her fence

E2 tomorrow

Puttheneedleontherackets · 29/09/2024 22:05

Did she sleep with that guy, missed that part?

I couldn’t have left my Dd 😫

Puttheneedleontherackets · 29/09/2024 22:08

How many parts is it? It says it on tomorrow but then when again, I’ll forget otherwise

Orangesandlemons4 · 29/09/2024 22:08

Loved episode 1! Thought Sophie Turner was brilliant.

Tempted to binge watch it but also enjoy watching one episode at a time.

SO, so much better than that silly Nightsleeper series!

Orangesandlemons4 · 29/09/2024 22:09

@Puttheneedleontherackets 6 episodes in total. It appears it’s the new thing for both BBC and ITV to premiere a new show and have 2 episodes back to back.

Piggywaspushed · 29/09/2024 22:09

Oh look, teal again!

Wicked Game was a big blooper though. That song is 1989!

The 80s look is great fashion wise but a lot of it looks more 60s. Perhaps for a heist aesthetic?

BlondeFool · 29/09/2024 22:10

It was brilliant. LOVED the 80's soundtrack.

It's so weird to see everyone smoking inside!
