New drama starting next sun and e2 Monday

6 parts - to me it reminds me of the film of the thief with Leo - catch me if you can

Joan is set in the brash and aspirational world of 1980s London and stars Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner as notorious real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington.

The six-part series is from writer Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson) and helmed by award-winning director Richard Laxton (The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (www.whattowatch.com/features/the-thief-his-wife-and-the-canoe-release-date-cast-plot-trailer-and-all-you-need-to-know)).

It's based on Joan’s memoirs detailing her extraordinary life from petty offender to criminal mastermind.

"I'm so excited to be bringing Joan Hannington’s fascinating life story to screen in Joan," says Sophie Turner.

"She's one of the most notorious figures in the criminal underworld of London, earning her the nickname The Godmother.

A woman who goes between her thriving and daring career as a jewel thief, all whilst trying to get her daughter back from social services, we see a mother in despair swept up in the exhilarating world of crime."

Joan begins with Joan in her twenties in a disastrous marriage to a violent man Gary. When Gary goes on the run, she seizes the moment to leave her old life along with her four-year-old daughter, Debbie.

Inspired by her desire to care for Debbie and create a secure home for her daughter, Joan makes some heart-breaking decisions as she sets her sights on a better life.

Making full use of her sharp intelligence, charm, and her talent for impersonation and performance, we follow the twists and turns in Joan’s life, the ups and downs, the heartache and the joy.

Adopting new identities and making new acquaintances along the way, Joan becomes a masterful jewel thief. She embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes journey that challenges her every limit, driven by her desire to care for her daughter and create a secure home for them both.

I know dramas have to have a bit of leeway and dramatic license but why did ITV change it so much unless the real Joan was happy for it to be changed

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/10/2024 12:44

She apparently was happy as went to the showing /premier of it

Tho if she did what she said she did in books - all the thefts

Why isnt she now being arrested for the Diamonds etx she stole

Too long ago and not in the public interest for her to be arrested?

What’s wrong with wanting to buy her book and read it?

Read about someone who did something nice.
Loads of people out there do good things.

What's the fascination, she wasn't a nice person and actually didn't give a shit about her daughter.
Now she wants to make money selling her story and fools buy into it.

If I want to read about the real Joan and her actual life, not a fictional version for ITV then I will. Please don’t police what I should read or not or call anyone on this thread who enjoyed the TV programme a fool

Lots of people make their money selling their story. Should we avoid those as well?

Flossiecotton · 16/10/2024 16:38

I hated the ending. The episodes were so unrealistic and boring. Kidnapping and the robbery were very poorly executed.

PassingStranger · 14/10/2024 22:12

It didn't happen like that at all.
There was no raid on the jewellers and her husband didn't die that way.
Why didn't they tell.it how it was.
Have never been able to find out what happened to Kelly either.
Where they ever reconciled.

I imagine they don't speak because the real Joan is on Instagram and she has posted pictures of her Son. A poster asked about Kelly and she said no comment. I wondered the same but I guess it's pretty obvious they are not in contact and there seems to be no trace of her daughter.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/10/2024 22:56

So what happened

If she didn't go to prison then did she not get Kelly out of care
