Blondeshavemorefun · 22/09/2024 19:14

New drama starting next sun and e2 Monday

6 parts - to me it reminds me of the film of the thief with Leo - catch me if you can

Joan is set in the brash and aspirational world of 1980s London and stars Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner as notorious real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington.

The six-part series is from writer Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson) and helmed by award-winning director Richard Laxton (The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (www.whattowatch.com/features/the-thief-his-wife-and-the-canoe-release-date-cast-plot-trailer-and-all-you-need-to-know)).

It's based on Joan’s memoirs detailing her extraordinary life from petty offender to criminal mastermind.

"I'm so excited to be bringing Joan Hannington’s fascinating life story to screen in Joan," says Sophie Turner.

"She's one of the most notorious figures in the criminal underworld of London, earning her the nickname The Godmother.

A woman who goes between her thriving and daring career as a jewel thief, all whilst trying to get her daughter back from social services, we see a mother in despair swept up in the exhilarating world of crime."

Joan begins with Joan in her twenties in a disastrous marriage to a violent man Gary. When Gary goes on the run, she seizes the moment to leave her old life along with her four-year-old daughter, Debbie.

Inspired by her desire to care for Debbie and create a secure home for her daughter, Joan makes some heart-breaking decisions as she sets her sights on a better life.

Making full use of her sharp intelligence, charm, and her talent for impersonation and performance, we follow the twists and turns in Joan’s life, the ups and downs, the heartache and the joy.

Adopting new identities and making new acquaintances along the way, Joan becomes a masterful jewel thief. She embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes journey that challenges her every limit, driven by her desire to care for her daughter and create a secure home for them both.

The Cellmate was there.

But unlikely to say yes she beat her up

Instead of the prisoner being IRA, was the prison officer IRA instead?

Yes I think so. Or IRA as well as the prisoner

JewelleryCat · 14/10/2024 21:40

Poor Boisie 🙁

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/10/2024 22:02

Oh. Enjoyed that. Didn't expect boycie to die or for her to leave Kelly in care

Did she get her back

and only 4yrs in prison

I wasn't sure how it would end

Equally amazed just managed to walk out with Kelly from school. But that's the 80's. Can't do that now

OP posts:
PassingStranger · 14/10/2024 22:12

It didn't happen like that at all.
There was no raid on the jewellers and her husband didn't die that way.
Why didn't they tell.it how it was.
Have never been able to find out what happened to Kelly either.
Where they ever reconciled.

She only ever was jailed gor using a stolen chequebook. The heist never happened.
Don't know why they told it like that and agree why.not say what happened to Kelly in the long run?

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/10/2024 22:14

But

I've googled and says the robbery didn't happen and boycie didn't die that way

He died while trying to set a house on fire 🙀🙀years later

And Joan was never done for jewellery theft but did time for using stolen cheque book

But did steal millions of jewels over the years

Why would they change the story like that - there was no robbery in jewellery shop - no boycie getting shot or prison

She had another child Benny with boycie

Why change the facts

I wasn’t enamoured with Boycie, I thought he’d have let her down.

I thought the ending was a little weak.

I did feel sorry for her in some ways. But I felt more sorry for the lady that took her in and was kind to her, who she then robbed the painting from, or the jewellery shop owner who gave her a job (ok he turned out to be a sleezy shit). They didn’t have a second thought about wrecking their lives. They were all very selfish.

A question- the lady that played the black guy’s girlfriend/wife - where have i seen her before? Was she Smithy’s girlfriend in the last Gavin and Stacey?

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/10/2024 22:15

Oh. Cross posts 😂

You wrote that while I was typing

From what I googled. Her son went to the prem of this but her daughter didn't

So not sure if not in contact at all

I'm actually quite pissed ofd they changed the ending so much

I was reading about her son benny and thoight she was preg during robbery

But no

None of it happened

So no ex Gary causing all this

I really enjoyed the whole series. Would even welcome a second one, but agree, after reading about what actually happened to her I think they could have made the story line more similar.

PassingStranger · 14/10/2024 22:32

She never went to Spain either to meet Albie?

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/10/2024 22:34

Seems not

As no robbery. No need to collect her share 4s later

I wouldn't bother with a second one if they did it.
At the end of the day it's just glamourising crime.
She was a thief. Not a good role model.

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/10/2024 23:04

I really enjoyed this series but having done a bit of digging on the background, I too am unsure why they deviated so much from the actual story of Joan Hannington's life. Also Boysie was 17 years older than her in real life. I'd love to have known if she ever reconciled with Kelly (or Debbie as she is in fact named). I'm going to buy her book.

Benny played the bartender in the episode where Joan and Boisie meet in the pub.

PrincessScarlett · 14/10/2024 23:10

Agree that the major deviation from what actually happened makes this a big let down. Maybe they thought the real story wasn't interesting enough to bring to the screen?

I tried googling what happened to the daughter. I'm guessing that the daughter doesn't want to be in the limelight if there's so little information about her.

Anonmousse · 14/10/2024 23:25

I watched it on itv x , a week or so ago.
I enjoyed it but it's obviously portraying Joan in a sympathetic light, you are drawn to being on her side. She had had quite a traumatic life, but then didn't think twice about trying to get back her daughter who would have also been traumatised in that environment.

I did find the jewellery part interesting but I'm amazed a back street jeweller would have found 80k to buy the bond street ring , whether now or in the 1980s!

why, why should someone make money selling a book when they did awful things and why do you want to read it odd.

JewelleryCat · 15/10/2024 14:09

What’s wrong with wanting to buy her book and read it?

TheFormidableMrsC · 15/10/2024 14:24

@PassingStranger Because it's a much bigger story and I'm interested. Is that ok?

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/10/2024 15:44

Wonder why she (original Joan) approved the change of story

I watched the last two today and I thought it was an odd ending . Wanted to know what happened next.

Then I read all the comments in here about her real life and the things that happened in the drama weren't real .

Can't figure out why they made the drama if her real life was so different . If itv thought her reality was boring , why make it at all . Really annoying .
