New drama starting next sun and e2 Monday

6 parts - to me it reminds me of the film of the thief with Leo - catch me if you can

Joan is set in the brash and aspirational world of 1980s London and stars Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner as notorious real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington.

The six-part series is from writer Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson) and helmed by award-winning director Richard Laxton (The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (www.whattowatch.com/features/the-thief-his-wife-and-the-canoe-release-date-cast-plot-trailer-and-all-you-need-to-know)).

It's based on Joan’s memoirs detailing her extraordinary life from petty offender to criminal mastermind.

"I'm so excited to be bringing Joan Hannington’s fascinating life story to screen in Joan," says Sophie Turner.

"She's one of the most notorious figures in the criminal underworld of London, earning her the nickname The Godmother.

A woman who goes between her thriving and daring career as a jewel thief, all whilst trying to get her daughter back from social services, we see a mother in despair swept up in the exhilarating world of crime."

Joan begins with Joan in her twenties in a disastrous marriage to a violent man Gary. When Gary goes on the run, she seizes the moment to leave her old life along with her four-year-old daughter, Debbie.

Inspired by her desire to care for Debbie and create a secure home for her daughter, Joan makes some heart-breaking decisions as she sets her sights on a better life.

Making full use of her sharp intelligence, charm, and her talent for impersonation and performance, we follow the twists and turns in Joan’s life, the ups and downs, the heartache and the joy.

Adopting new identities and making new acquaintances along the way, Joan becomes a masterful jewel thief. She embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes journey that challenges her every limit, driven by her desire to care for her daughter and create a secure home for them both.

E2 was great.

Glad she went back to Bernard's as I said last night very suss if she didn't

I would be wary of burying Diamonds incase someone found them

Silly stealing the silver thing at the hotel

Loved the hair change . She suits all colours and styles

Amazing how a nice dress and accent means people trust you more and 3 cheqs are cashed

She was funny on the On the plane

Wonderful music again including Wham.

And the freebies like sewing kit and Shoehorn 😂😂

And now kissing

And the dog in the bag

Lovely to see Laura Aikman as Val. But she obv has no idea what her hubby does

Didn't reliese boycie was Tom riddle in Harry p !!

And seems ss won't give her Kelly back / she is such a cutie

So she's gonna get lots of money and get her back

I watched yesterday. Thought it was really good. Loved the music and the whole 80s vibe. Trying not to Google the real story.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/10/2024 10:27

Same. I don't know the story so don't want to ruin it for myself @lazymum99

I am really confused I'm watching episode one
Does her front door open right into her bedroom??

BlondeFool · 01/10/2024 10:52

I'm loving it! Sophie Turner is a great actress. Her eyes are mesmerising. I only ever watched one series of Game of Thrones as too glory abs incestous for me so haven't really seen her in anything.

I think she had made a bedroom in the sitting room and given her bedroom to Kelly,

purpleme12 · 01/10/2024 11:06

Oh right ok

purpleme12 · 01/10/2024 11:09

The painters have arrived 😂

purpleme12 · 01/10/2024 11:37

So she actually swallowed the stones?!?
I didn't think that was possible!

And then drank olive oil and pooed them out?!

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/10/2024 11:55

Yes @purpleme12

Or she could have stuffed then down her bra

Swallowing them seemed extreme

But did love the sieve

butterpuffed · 01/10/2024 19:32

I googled to see if the real Joan swallowed the diamonds and yes she did ! Not sure about the sieve 😅

JenniferBooth · 01/10/2024 19:34

Thought it was fucking nasty of her to lay the groundwork for the old pervy boss to think her work collegue Linda was the thief

Bunionbabe · 02/10/2024 09:18

It's good to see a drama where the whole plot isn't driven along by mobile phones and text messages. I don't know if the colleague would be blamed, hadn't she gone home?

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/10/2024 11:18

They didn't finish the stick count so don't know missing yet

Might not be for another week or so so seems Joan is in the clear

I am so surprised about all the comments here. I watched episode 1, excited that there was a new autumn drama to get stuck in to and I thought it was awful

I was so bored and thought at the end that’s an hour of my life I won’t get back

Maybe give it another go later but it’s at the back of my queue of things to watch now

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/10/2024 12:28

It's fab. Esp the music but maybe depends on your age. I'm 52 so grew up /went clubbing in the 80's

I have seen all 6 episodes on ITVX and thought it was the best tv drama since Happy Valley.

Yip 80s is my era too but music aside, the story just didn’t grab me

Just watched an interview with the real Joan from a couple of decades ago, she’s quite a character.
I think she is in the background in a hotel scene - I’ve seen some pics of her now, she’s hard to miss. Her son plays a barman, too.
There are a few errors in terms of music/staging. I was shouting at the TV when I heard ‘Wicked Game’ as it was realised in 1989 and but only became a big hit in 1991 when Helena was in the video.
The dialogue is not scintillating it just moves the story along.
However, Sophie Turner is absolutely mesmerising as Joan. She’s funny, vulnerable, tough, endearing and at times ruthless. What strikes me is that she’s really intelligent - had she had a supportive home and a great education she could have gone far in a different way.
1985 seems like yesterday to me but viewing it through Joan’s lens it was still a tough time for women.
And one final note - I wish they’d given her sister a different hairstyle. Even Phil Oakey had grown out his Phil Oakey by 1985. It’s a bit like Chandler’s Flock of Seagulls do - it doesn’t quite fit.
However, there was a lot for me to enjoy here in terms of stepping back in time.
And I’m rooting for Joan even though she’s not exactly a sympathetic character at times.
It is also nuts to see how we lived before CCTV, store security and mobile devices.

Did it say it was meant to be 1985? From the music (except for Chris Isaak) I thought it was earlier than that. Probably 1981?

Bunionbabe · 03/10/2024 07:53

Does anyone know who the actress is playing the social worker?

Dorothy Atkinson.

She's been in loads of stuff. She was recently in Ludwig as a detective boss. Played the judgemental SIL in Mum with Lesley Manville.

Bunionbabe · 03/10/2024 08:40

Thanks Partridge, I knew I'd seen her is something recently, Ludwig.

Orangesandlemons4 · 03/10/2024 10:48

Finally caught up with episode 2 last night. Loved it again and tempted to watch it all on ITVX, but then also it’s nice to have something to look forward to. I really wish there wasn’t an option nowadays to just watch a series in one go on iPlayer, ITVX etc.

I have never seen Sophie Turner in anything before (am still to watch GoT). I think she is brilliant. Portrays the character perfectly.
