New drama starting next sun and e2 Monday

6 parts - to me it reminds me of the film of the thief with Leo - catch me if you can

Joan is set in the brash and aspirational world of 1980s London and stars Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner as notorious real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington.

The six-part series is from writer Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson) and helmed by award-winning director Richard Laxton (The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (www.whattowatch.com/features/the-thief-his-wife-and-the-canoe-release-date-cast-plot-trailer-and-all-you-need-to-know)).

It's based on Joan’s memoirs detailing her extraordinary life from petty offender to criminal mastermind.

"I'm so excited to be bringing Joan Hannington’s fascinating life story to screen in Joan," says Sophie Turner.

"She's one of the most notorious figures in the criminal underworld of London, earning her the nickname The Godmother.

A woman who goes between her thriving and daring career as a jewel thief, all whilst trying to get her daughter back from social services, we see a mother in despair swept up in the exhilarating world of crime."

Joan begins with Joan in her twenties in a disastrous marriage to a violent man Gary. When Gary goes on the run, she seizes the moment to leave her old life along with her four-year-old daughter, Debbie.

Inspired by her desire to care for Debbie and create a secure home for her daughter, Joan makes some heart-breaking decisions as she sets her sights on a better life.

Making full use of her sharp intelligence, charm, and her talent for impersonation and performance, we follow the twists and turns in Joan’s life, the ups and downs, the heartache and the joy.

Adopting new identities and making new acquaintances along the way, Joan becomes a masterful jewel thief. She embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes journey that challenges her every limit, driven by her desire to care for her daughter and create a secure home for them both.

Joan cast — Sophie Turner as Joan Hannington
In Joan, Sophie Turner plays petty criminal-turned-jewel thief Joan Hannington in the series.

I have to stop myself feeling sorry for her. She is a thief. And more than that she went along with selling a painting to the IRA who would use the funds to buy weapons with which a lot of people were killed. I hate it when they glamorise criminals. These 2 were not committing victimless crimes. She was a bloody awful mother.

Putting Kelly in care was the best thing Joan could do for her and a selfless act. Kelly has seen nothing but violence in her short life so no wonder she's happy in foster care.

I despise dramas made about criminals as it's just glamorising criminal behaviour. Agree Joan and Boisie didn't care one bit about anyone else and they are not particularly likeable. However I must say that Sophie Turner is absolutely memorising to watch. And I'm a big Frank Dillane fan as he was in Fear The Walking Dead. I think these two are carrying the series completely and if they'd got the casting wrong it would be a massive flop.

omg did not expect that ending!!

does she know the police officer who followed her?

and I wonder if Boisie will get caught!!

I do agree with you @SydneyCarton about her saying she wants to get her daughter back all of the time but then coming up with new theft ideas. But I do feel sorry for her though!

I felt sorry for her too. I believe she had genuine intentions for Kelly. The husband she met wasn't all bad either he told her to work in his shop and it was actually Kelly who didn't know to quit whilst she was ahead. He also mentioned she loved the role play of the dress up... he was infact an angel incomparison to Joan. Excellent show!

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/10/2024 22:18

I don't think boycie was caught

Guess we find out in e5

But he walked out

He didn't have any cash

So prob nothing on him

Having a drink with an Irish man

The husband is quite fit, saw him in an interview recently and he was completely different, hard to believe it was the same person-testament to his acting I suppose!

rosieandjay · 09/10/2024 13:26

Does anyone think Sophie Turner is quite like Elizabeth Debicki in this?

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/10/2024 11:01

Don't know who she is

E5 tonight. Last one Tom

Joan decides one last job .......

I don't feel sorry for her either.
She didn't have to go down the road she did,and she let the other shop assistant get the blame for the diamonds.

How did she get those bruises. Was it the prison officer?

Puttheneedleontherackets · 14/10/2024 00:11

Was this the last one?? Didn’t see and totally forgot to record it

I don't actually know her story as such and haven't googled so don't ruin it even tho I know it's a true story

But obv can't get away with stealing all the jewellery and live happily after

Why would the prison officer do that and wouldn't she report it.

I doubt you'd get away with doing that to a prisoner tbh.

JewelleryCat · 14/10/2024 12:40

Instead of the prisoner being IRA, was the prison officer IRA instead?

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/10/2024 13:28

Or just a horrible prison officer and who will beleive Joan

Yes I thought that too. He seemed quite socially awkward in an interview I saw. He's a great actor.
