New drama starting next sun and e2 Monday

6 parts - to me it reminds me of the film of the thief with Leo - catch me if you can

Joan is set in the brash and aspirational world of 1980s London and stars Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner as notorious real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington.

The six-part series is from writer Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson) and helmed by award-winning director Richard Laxton (The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (www.whattowatch.com/features/the-thief-his-wife-and-the-canoe-release-date-cast-plot-trailer-and-all-you-need-to-know)).

It's based on Joan’s memoirs detailing her extraordinary life from petty offender to criminal mastermind.

"I'm so excited to be bringing Joan Hannington’s fascinating life story to screen in Joan," says Sophie Turner.

"She's one of the most notorious figures in the criminal underworld of London, earning her the nickname The Godmother.

A woman who goes between her thriving and daring career as a jewel thief, all whilst trying to get her daughter back from social services, we see a mother in despair swept up in the exhilarating world of crime."

Joan begins with Joan in her twenties in a disastrous marriage to a violent man Gary. When Gary goes on the run, she seizes the moment to leave her old life along with her four-year-old daughter, Debbie.

Inspired by her desire to care for Debbie and create a secure home for her daughter, Joan makes some heart-breaking decisions as she sets her sights on a better life.

Making full use of her sharp intelligence, charm, and her talent for impersonation and performance, we follow the twists and turns in Joan’s life, the ups and downs, the heartache and the joy.

Adopting new identities and making new acquaintances along the way, Joan becomes a masterful jewel thief. She embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes journey that challenges her every limit, driven by her desire to care for her daughter and create a secure home for them both.

Joan cast — Sophie Turner as Joan Hannington
In Joan, Sophie Turner plays petty criminal-turned-jewel thief Joan Hannington in the series.

JenniferBooth · 29/09/2024 22:16

These days she would be told that she made herself intentionally homeless.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/09/2024 22:17

True @JenniferBooth

Ss seemed very sympathetic

Husband It said Hannington on his business card that he gave her in the pub.

He was her second husband, she married the first one at 17 and had her daughter at 18. I thought it was brilliant.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/09/2024 10:10

Wa she married to Gary ?

As thought he was the dad to her daughter

Recap says she didn't sleep with boycie.

Women definitely had no choice but to put their children in to care. There were no homes for single mothers. The film Cathy Come Home really did bring it to the Nation’s attention.

i had several cousins who went into care when their various dads were in prison. The boys were sent to different homes from the girls, my aunt and the three babies under 3 to a hostel. One was a family of 7 who were split between 3 different homes. I remember by Nan going to see the oldest 2 girls, who were 10 and 11, as my aunt had no money for the fare

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/09/2024 14:01

That seems so sad @Flossiecotton tho guess surely better they had a safe place to take their children

Now they seem to stay in abusive homes /relationships

Just watched an interview with the real Joan from a couple of decades ago, she’s quite a character.
I think she is in the background in a hotel scene - I’ve seen some pics of her now, she’s hard to miss. Her son plays a barman, too.
There are a few errors in terms of music/staging. I was shouting at the TV when I heard ‘Wicked Game’ as it was realised in 1989 and but only became a big hit in 1991 when Helena was in the video.
The dialogue is not scintillating it just moves the story along.
However, Sophie Turner is absolutely mesmerising as Joan. She’s funny, vulnerable, tough, endearing and at times ruthless. What strikes me is that she’s really intelligent - had she had a supportive home and a great education she could have gone far in a different way.
1985 seems like yesterday to me but viewing it through Joan’s lens it was still a tough time for women.
And one final note - I wish they’d given her sister a different hairstyle. Even Phil Oakey had grown out his Phil Oakey by 1985. It’s a bit like Chandler’s Flock of Seagulls do - it doesn’t quite fit.
However, there was a lot for me to enjoy here in terms of stepping back in time.
And I’m rooting for Joan even though she’s not exactly a sympathetic character at times.
It is also nuts to see how we lived before CCTV, store security and mobile devices.

I'm liking this , Haven't seen the woman who plays Joan before but she's a good actor and the character is very interesting . Love the music too , remember the songs well .

Glynis Barber had a similar hairstyle while in Dempsey and Makepeace but hers was shorter at the back rather than the side.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/09/2024 16:07

I think I'm enjoying as though a true story - I don't know if so not sure how will pan out

Assume gets caught eventually - I don't want to know

Good detective work with knowing she will Marry boycie due to his name on card

Looking to be a really ace series.

Pigeonqueen · 30/09/2024 18:57

I’m enjoying this but finding the cockney accents a bit cringey. But I think that’s because I know both Sophie Turner and Frank D are putting them on and I just keep hearing them drop in and out of it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/09/2024 18:58

It's great. Roll on 9pm

Tho I may watch at 8 on ITVX as clashes with NIGHTSLEEPER last episode
