Blondeshavemorefun · 22/09/2024 19:14

New drama starting next sun and e2 Monday

6 parts - to me it reminds me of the film of the thief with Leo - catch me if you can

Joan is set in the brash and aspirational world of 1980s London and stars Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner as notorious real-life jewel thief Joan Hannington.

The six-part series is from writer Anna Symon (Mrs Wilson) and helmed by award-winning director Richard Laxton (The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe (www.whattowatch.com/features/the-thief-his-wife-and-the-canoe-release-date-cast-plot-trailer-and-all-you-need-to-know)).

It's based on Joan’s memoirs detailing her extraordinary life from petty offender to criminal mastermind.

"I'm so excited to be bringing Joan Hannington’s fascinating life story to screen in Joan," says Sophie Turner.

"She's one of the most notorious figures in the criminal underworld of London, earning her the nickname The Godmother.

A woman who goes between her thriving and daring career as a jewel thief, all whilst trying to get her daughter back from social services, we see a mother in despair swept up in the exhilarating world of crime."

Joan begins with Joan in her twenties in a disastrous marriage to a violent man Gary. When Gary goes on the run, she seizes the moment to leave her old life along with her four-year-old daughter, Debbie.

Inspired by her desire to care for Debbie and create a secure home for her daughter, Joan makes some heart-breaking decisions as she sets her sights on a better life.

Making full use of her sharp intelligence, charm, and her talent for impersonation and performance, we follow the twists and turns in Joan’s life, the ups and downs, the heartache and the joy.

Adopting new identities and making new acquaintances along the way, Joan becomes a masterful jewel thief. She embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes journey that challenges her every limit, driven by her desire to care for her daughter and create a secure home for them both.

Watched this with my DH and it was so good loved all the 80s music and the glamour of Spain in the 80s, wasn't it known as the Costa Del Crime back then? Sophie Turner is brilliant and great to see her in a different role than Sanza in GOT

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/10/2024 13:22

@Orangesandlemons4 resist the urge

And agree annoying can binge it all

Thought they tried a bit hard with the 80s music- it was the obvious classics rather than than some of the less well stuff that would have also been played at the time.If that makes sense.

Wicked Game didn’t come out until 1990 as someone already said.

It seems it was also easier to walk into jobs in the 80s, not like now when employers check right to work documents and identity. And passports could be easily forged.

Also cheques. Cheques were still
being used by shoppers even in the early 00s seems strange really , considering how they could easily be forged or mis used. I remember having a part time job in 1999/2000 and some people used cheques for payment.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/10/2024 14:52

Think I still have a cheq book in my kitchen drawer

Tho when I worked in my local coop 1988 we def had to see a card to accept a chewue and wrote their details on the back

E3 tonight

Joan rises to new height with their theft of a painting and a ring but slipping away from her daughter Kelly

I’ve just found my old cheque book and the last one was written fourteen years ago 😮. Still dithering over whether I should chuck it out or not!

The actress who played the woman with the painting looks familiar but I can’t place her.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/10/2024 21:16

Oh she's clever about getting a fake done

I haven't got a cheque book any more , but my brother sent me a cheque a couple of Christmases ago ! I googled to see if I could use my Banking app and you can . Had to take photos of the front and back of the cheque !

Back to Joan ~ none of the men seem to think a woman can do what she does but she's quite clever . It looks like she's going to lose her daughter though .

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/10/2024 14:14

She's def smart @butterpuffed

I hope she doesn't lose Kelly

Hopefully getting married and having a nice home will help

It's only been a month or so hasn't it

Surely kelt would want her mum

OP posts:
lazymum99 · 07/10/2024 15:01

As an aside if you get a tax rebate HMRC send you a cheque

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/10/2024 19:00

Really @lazymum99

Don't think I have ever had a rebate so wouldn't know 😛

Wouidnt it be easier to just put back into account

Pb used to do cheqs but no reinvest so no delay

Have to say I’m not loving it. Strangely for me I’m finding it a bit dull but will probably relegate to one to watch while ironing or cooking.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/10/2024 20:25

That's a shame @WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout

It's def very good

£40k on a diamond ring 🙀🙀🙀

Omfg
Spending that now is obscene but in the 80's

OP posts:
JewelleryCat · 07/10/2024 21:14

Is it a different girl playing Kelly?

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/10/2024 21:18

I don't think so

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 07/10/2024 21:57

I think Sophie turner is great but I’m getting annoyed with Joan constantly going on about wanting to get her daughter back but doing nothing to distance herself from crime. Surely after the first couple of jobs when she’d got a decent bit of money she could have rented a nice flat and got a steady legitimate job, which is obviously going to look much better to Social Services than a hasty marriage to a blatantly dodgy petty criminal…

Orangesandlemons4 · 07/10/2024 22:00

omg did not expect that ending!!

does she know the police officer who followed her?

and I wonder if Boisie will get caught!!

I do agree with you @SydneyCarton about her saying she wants to get her daughter back all of the time but then coming up with new theft ideas. But I do feel sorry for her though!

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/10/2024 22:02

@Orangesandlemons4 was t it the man o. Tried to crack on to her in e1 in the club

Then saw her on the beach and she said it was a pig

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 07/10/2024 22:02

After the painting she wanted to go straight for Kelly

Why do you feel sorry for her?
Neither of them cared about anyone else. Stealing just to live the high life etc
Bet you wouldn't feel sorry for her if you owned a jewellers shop and she came in.
She choose that life.
Itv making entertainment again out of a couple who weren't nice at all. Only thought of themselves.
