I'm a little bit excited. 9pm. Channel 5 for lovely comfort viewing and looking misty eyed at Siegfried 🥰

Is it only me finding this a bit cringy

I’m thinking what the matter with James is, he’s being very odd

Coolcats24 · 24/10/2024 21:23

Extremely cringey

Houseplanter · 24/10/2024 21:43

That jams not very hot!

JewelleryCat · 24/10/2024 22:05

I want to know why the horse did what it did. Did it faint after the injection?

No idea! They mentioned something about shock?

Some things from last night:

  1. what the heck was that ‘jam’?! Wrong consistency and colour for strawberry jam - and no sign of any fruit
  2. Mrs Hall took the casserole dish out of the oven using oven gloves and Tristan immediately lifted off the lid with his bare hands
  3. Looks like romance is in the offing with wafty archeologist lady. Damn.
  4. Helen really can’t act - although her outfits are lovely
RainintheDesert · 25/10/2024 09:32

James has Brucellosis and PTSD.

The dialogue seems extra stilted this week.

Littletoaster · 25/10/2024 10:26

I liked the first 3 eps of this season, but the last 3 didn't land for me. A lot of silliness with no real depth to anything.
I still like the show, but it's not what it used to be.

Can shock make a horse collapse then two seconds later, the horse is back on its feet? I was hoping they’d have a brainwave whilst in the beautiful Dales scenery but they didn’t

Houseplanter · 25/10/2024 11:27

The whole James being delirious thing was very silly and very inaccurate.

Taking your shirt off and having your forehead dabbed with a damp cloth doesn't change you from hyperpyrexial to right as rain and back downstairs in the time it makes to make a pot of jam.

His symptoms were not even the same as his first episode while in the RAF.

I enjoyed the series but am left feeling disappointed. Hope the Christmas special is indeed special.

Maybe his injured colleague will indeed end up in Pumphrey Manor for a lovely Christmastime and James will come to terms with things a little.

Yes very silly

He would have needed to rest overnight at the least

suburburban · 25/10/2024 11:30

Love Helen's clothes. Would she wear trousers or was it acceptable at home

Clawdy · 25/10/2024 12:19

In the original book James mentions her wearing trousers when he first sees her, and how good she looked in them! And Tristan agrees with him.

MyOtherProfile · 25/10/2024 12:58

I'm sure she would wear trousers - there was a big shift towards trousers becoming acceptable for women in the 40s because of their shifting roles during the war. Especially a woman like Helen who grew up on a farm, I expect.

suburburban · 25/10/2024 13:46

That makes sense

I know mil in 1950s was discouraged in wearing trousers

I reluctantly agree as I so wanted to love it!

No! That's goats!

I didn’t know that about goats. I guess All Creatures Great and Small will never explain the horse lol

Squidgemoon · 25/10/2024 19:52

I enjoyed the last episode, especially the Tristan/Siegfried bits! Shame we have to wait for the Christmas special now!

AutumnMagpies · 25/10/2024 19:53

That episode was much better than the others.

PrimalScreaming · 25/10/2024 20:37

I missed Carmody... hope he may be back for the Christmas Special!

Yes, also noted the jam (wrong consistency, colour & temp)... I think it shows that the crew is probably now so young as to never have made jam! Also James's miraculous recovery!

There were a lot of very pretty huge sweeping shots this ep... almost too many. I guess with drones anything is now possible.

For all that I still enjoy it... just a bit of cosy nostalgia.

Does anyone know if we are going to get tragedy for Mrs Hall at some point? I'm sure in series 3 or 4 when she saw her son he had on a naval hat belonging to a ship which sank in WW2? (perhaps not something for the Christmas Special though!)

CarmelaBrunella · 26/10/2024 07:54

The Tristan - Siegfried relationship is funny. I loved the sobriety test!
Why Mrs Hall hasn't been snapped up by the War Office, I don't know. That woman could coordinate a battle. The amount of management she does is something.
I think James' episode showed that you don't come out of war experience unscathed, and I actually thought it was very touching. I've enjoyed the stories, the humour and the scenery. I wish the series was longer.

AutumnMagpies · 26/10/2024 08:10

What happened to Audrey’s son and her love interest? I feel I have missed something there. She seems to have no life outside spacing for the Farnons. I also wonder why the men call her Mrs but Helen calls her Audrey?

CarmelaBrunella · 26/10/2024 08:15

He moved away and Audrey decided not to go with him. It was quite a poignant episode. Her son joined the Navy and she met up with him to say goodbye.

Is it a respect thing for the men? They can’t bring themselves to call her Audrey but Helen can?

I think you're probably right. The women are more like friends, I think.
I enjoyed it, as always. It's nice and easy on the eye.
That pony was so cute and the horse was as gorgeous as the scenery around it.

No, horses don't generally respond like that to injections, so it was just for the story. They don't sit like dogs either, or lie down on command as a rule so they'd obviously used trick trained beasties.

Looking forward to the Christmas episode!
