I'm a little bit excited. 9pm. Channel 5 for lovely comfort viewing and looking misty eyed at Siegfried 🥰

I wonder why little Jimmy is always bundled up as
if he’s in the Arctic in his pram indoors. He must be expiring from the heat. He never cries, just lies there silently all day long.

I think they always put hats on baby's on the telly to disguise the fact they're using different babies. It's quite hard to get the same hair on different babies. I did think this baby is the world's easiest baby this week though, it's so chilled out.

Not sure Tristan went to Egypt and for rationing to be on they seem to have a lot of food around like sliced bread and a heap of butter for sandwiches

I think because they lived in a rural location there may have been more availability?

My dm told me she was never hungry in war as they lived in a town with farms around?

I did wonder if farmers just kept a little of what they produced back for themselves and selling on the back market. So if you had 20 lambs born you just told whoever was in charge you only had 18 etc.

CarmelaBrunella · 12/10/2024 11:41

Tristan and Carmody are such good actors, those scenes were funny and really well done.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/10/2024 15:30

When Carmody mentioned going to boarding school I thought Tristan was going to say me to. I assumed he would have been at boarding school especially for the teen years? I know his parents died young and Siegfried would have been working/setting up a business at that point.

I wondered if Tristan had gone to boarding school but Siegfried's wife Evelyn only died 4 years before the first series began so she presumably helped to bring Tristan up. Also I don't think Siegfried's would have forgotten to collect Tristan for an entire summer holiday as Richard said in the previous episode I am warming to Richard now. He clearly had 'odd' parents who did not acknowledge Christmas and clearly want nothing to do with their son even now. If they had MN in 1930s he'd clearly be posting in Stately Homes. I think he and Tristan are going to provide some good comedy stuff.

Not enough Siegfried tonight but lovely all the same.
Tristan is hiding something I think. Was he even in Egypt I wonder? Thinking back to his failed exam years he seems the same sort of cagey chap he was then but styling it out with false bravado.
Is James developing some PTSD? He was very jumpy and out of sorts.
Was Jimmy played by a different baby today??
I like the look of the book of the series. There's another one too.

Tris has been away for well over a year. He's been writing home to his brother regularly. I'm not sure even he could keep up a pretence that long.

SirChenjins · 17/10/2024 21:25

Is this the first glimpse of the future Mrs Siegfried? I hope not - she’s irritated me intensely in the first 5 minutes for some reason.

Portakalkedi · 17/10/2024 21:48

I'm loving it and agree that the casting is so much better than in the original. Not sure though why Mrs Hall has been given such a big role, as in the books she was a minor character.

Houseplanter · 17/10/2024 22:02

Carmody will be a big loss if he goes.. I wonder if Doris will change his mind. Her part seems to be growing

I do miss more 'cases'.. it's all turned a bit soap opera

But still love it.

SirChenjins · 17/10/2024 22:06

Agree with this. The characters are great - do well acted and definitely better than the original - but I’d like to see a shift back to the animals.

JewelleryCat · 17/10/2024 22:07

I think Carmody will change his mind. He’ll help out on a big case then have a change of heart I reckon. All these dramas seem to play out like that lol and I loved seeing all the animals today

When she talked about ‘a fork in the road’ I thought she was telling him she was a lesbian. Especially because she had said she had avoided men’s plans for her ever since her DH’s death.

But I think I probably got that wildly wrong.

Houseplanter · 17/10/2024 22:18

@HotSource it crossed my mind too..

What a beautiful house and garden though..

StMarieforme · 17/10/2024 22:21

I went to (quite rural) America at the start of the year. People stopped me, knowing I was British, and said they knew the accent from All Creatures Great and Small. I love it too! Watched it in the 70s, but actually think this incarnation is even better!

StMarieforme · 17/10/2024 22:28

SiegfriedsCupofTea · 11/10/2024 07:32

It's a drama, not a documentary. It's for entertainment. It doesn't need to be historically accurate to the nth degree.

Heartily agree.

Me too. Glad I wasn't the only one.
Also, it didn't sit right with me that Siegfried was attracted to her glamour and intelligence etc and then Mrs Hall was just at home wringing out towels.
I love Mrs Hall but it just bothered me for some reason.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/10/2024 23:04

I was a bit confused about Carmody going to London, wouldn't that be a bit dangerous with all the bombs being dropped on it?

Mind you there doesn't seem to be much work for them all so maybe he needed to go as the house was getting a bit full!

The baby was so cute tonight.

Clawdy · 18/10/2024 18:15

I was thinking that as Mrs Hall and the Jobsworth Guy were walking away, there'd be a bomb explosion behind them! And Mrs Hall for once would be wrong! Grin

SirChenjins · 18/10/2024 18:56

I completely missed the fork in the road meaning - I hope that’s what it meant, I really didn’t take to her. Probably because I really want Siegfried and Mrs Hall to end up together even though I know that they won’t for all sorts of reasons!

Is it when the writers start to improvise more

Did Alf write much about his life in the 40s.

I remember the original series was pre and post war itms

CTM also became a bit soapy in the same way

CarmelaBrunella · 19/10/2024 09:52

Richard Carmody is such a great character, and so well played. The way he scientifically deduces attraction! I like him and Siegfried together. It's a shame he's going.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 19/10/2024 10:02

Do we think he did pass? Just his reaction seemed odd.

CarmelaBrunella · 19/10/2024 10:04

Yes, he passed with a distinction plus! That's why he got the research job at Imperial College.
He just felt a bit conflicted because Skeldale was the first home he'd had and fitted in to, I think.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 19/10/2024 10:09

Oh yes! Have a bad cold that has addled my brain! 🤦🏻‍♀️
