I'm a little bit excited. 9pm. Channel 5 for lovely comfort viewing and looking misty eyed at Siegfried 🥰

I thought that was just Mrs Herriot's rose tinted view of James's infancy and unsolicited advice about everything getting up Helen's nose.

CarmelaBrunella · 05/10/2024 08:01

Could be.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/10/2024 22:02

Loved this week's episode, still wondering what happened to Tristan in Egypt though.

Littletoaster · 10/10/2024 22:10

That was great fun. Love having Tristan back although I'm also wondering what happened to him in Egypt

Crummles · 10/10/2024 22:22

I'm not enjoying this series so far

SiegfriedsCupofTea · 10/10/2024 22:57

Not enough Siegfried tonight but lovely all the same.
Tristan is hiding something I think. Was he even in Egypt I wonder? Thinking back to his failed exam years he seems the same sort of cagey chap he was then but styling it out with false bravado.
Is James developing some PTSD? He was very jumpy and out of sorts.
Was Jimmy played by a different baby today??
I like the look of the book of the series. There's another one too.

James seems to feel guilty about being home, whereas Tristan is revelling in it. Wonder how it will develop.

Coolcats24 · 11/10/2024 06:20

I'm feeling a bit meh about it
It's very twee
The war references is getting a bit daft with characters hopping in and out of uniforms
I definitely preferred the original BBC version thinking about it

InMySpareTime · 11/10/2024 07:24

I want more vet work and less angst. One constipated cow and a snake hunt is not going to keep three trained vets (and Tristan) busy.
After all the blackout drama, the unused rooms in Pomphrey manor should have had curtains closed, I know it was easier for filming but organising opening hundreds of curtains every morning would definitely have sent Matron over the edge!

SiegfriedsCupofTea · 11/10/2024 07:32

It's a drama, not a documentary. It's for entertainment. It doesn't need to be historically accurate to the nth degree.

In the original one, James was a middle aged Englishman who looked like he'd been up all night with 5 kids. Helen was a woman in pearls who looked and sounded like she'd never seen an animal.
I think having James as a Scot and Helen as a Yorkshire woman who'd actually lived on a farm is far better. Plus, at least they look under 50.
Sam West is a better Siegfried as well.

WinterFrog · 11/10/2024 07:41

@SiegfriedsCupofTea I did not know about the book so thank you for mentioning it. Looks lovely (as beautiful as the series!)Tempted to buy it for my mum for Christmas. I'm still really enjoying the series. It's very soothing!

Clawdy · 11/10/2024 23:03

Yes CarmelaBrunella you're so right, the casting is far more realistic in this series.

AutumnMagpies · 11/10/2024 23:10

I wonder why little Jimmy is always bundled up as
if he’s in the Arctic in his pram indoors. He must be expiring from the heat. He never cries, just lies there silently all day long.

AutumnMagpies · 11/10/2024 23:11

Also finding this series disappointing. Sick and tired of Audrey appearing in every bloody scene too. She barely features in the books. What happened to her boyfriend? She decided she was going to leave Darrowby and join him in the last series.

Ok I have to just post here- was in the yorkshire dales last weekend.

was in an amazing hotel with themed rooms-my room was of course "all creatures great and small"

walked in to find nicholas ralph sitting in the bar. It felt very surreal-he was absolutely lovely and I later saw Sam West leaving with him-they were doing a charity thing in the area.

That is amazing! Did you manage to talk to them at all or get an autograph or selfie? I bet the themed room was lovely 🙂

Edingril · 12/10/2024 05:16

Not sure Tristan went to Egypt and for rationing to be on they seem to have a lot of food around like sliced bread and a heap of butter for sandwiches

If he's too hot, he'd complain. A crying baby doesn't make for lightheaded entertainment.

How lovely! I'm glad that he's nice and friendly in real life.

I thought she decided not to go with him in the end?

WinterFrog · 12/10/2024 07:51

I enjoyed it again last night ( and now see that the book was advertised at the end) I see it as a nice, easy to watch series, and don't worry too much about what's historically accurate and what's not.

I liked the interaction between Richard and Tristan this week.
The part where Shep caused the postman to fall off his bike made me laugh out loud. And the ending with Siegfried and Audrey sitting on the sofa with the dog gave me a lovely warm glow.

I think my mum probably still has the original novels and I'm quite tempted to read them again. They were my stepping stone into adult books, following Enid Blyton and Pullein-Thompson books when I was 12/13

Yes, it was well done. Quite touching.

Also surprised that the pub was open in the afternoon on a Sunday. I'm pretty sure pubs had Sunday closing until the 80s, coming back from a 12noon christening they should have only had an hour to drink anyway.

Pretty sure that was just Wales.

We have only just got into this - about to start series 3 on My5 so hope to be up to date in time for the Christmas special!
