I'm a little bit excited. 9pm. Channel 5 for lovely comfort viewing and looking misty eyed at Siegfried 🥰

Is it when the writers start to improvise more

Did Alf write much about his life in the 40s.

I remember the original series was pre and post war itms

CTM also became a bit soapy in the same way

I agree, CTM has become really soapy - it was a shame as it started so well.

CarmelaBrunella · 19/10/2024 13:02

CTM was brilliant in the early days, completely female centred, and covering quite challenging issues about women and their health. Then it became more about that doctor, and also completely anachronistic episodes regarding homosexuality and disability. It just became some sort of issue led soap.

Coolcats24 · 19/10/2024 13:13

I think I'm going to give up on it
It's bordering on farcical now
Mrs Hall swapping her pinny for her uniform to go and check out a UXB has finished it for me
Just ridiculous

AutumnMagpies · 19/10/2024 17:34

This series is not doing it for me at all. Painting by numbers . I’m just bored.

It was based on the book at the start so very much built around the midwives. Then they seemed to run out of the factual accounts and The Important Male took centre stage alongside the teal and issues. Most frustrating. I fear ACGAS is going down the same soap route, which is a shame as the actors are very talented and capable of far more.

I just enjoy it for the cosy feels and the beautiful scenery. It's a long time since I read the books though.

RainintheDesert · 19/10/2024 20:08

I agree we need more animal cases!

It's drifting a bit.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/10/2024 09:45

I love it, I think if they did more animal stuff people would moan there isn't enough character focus 🤷‍♀️

SiegfriedsCupofTea · 20/10/2024 10:39

I watched the first couple of episodes of the original last night and enjoyed it as did ds. It's not as warm and cosy as the current one but I like it.

I watched the original one on BBC4 last night. It was good and better than watching it on drama with all the adverts

WinterFrog · 20/10/2024 17:24

I thoroughly enjoyed the latest episode. I see no point in them making an identikit reprisal of the old series. I rather like the idea that they took the books/ old series and decided to flesh out the characters. I love the cast, the scenery is beautifully shot, and it's sweetly undemanding. I feel absolutely no need to go digging for underlying themes, myself.
For us it's up there with Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse's fishing series for feel good 'end of the week' viewing.

Loved the Richard/Siegfried scenes this week 💕

I don’t think they would - it had more of an animal focus at the beginning and people loved it so much that further series were commissioned.

YY to it being up there with Gone Fishing @WinterFrog 😊

Crummles · 21/10/2024 22:37

@Coolcats24 and @AutumnMagpies

I agree. It just feels so shallow, repetitive, no story line etc

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/10/2024 05:56

also saw the original at the weekend and the two accompanying programmes , the one with Melvin Bragg was excellent. such a warm character James Herriot/Alf Wright

JewelleryCat · 24/10/2024 18:29

Unfortunately it seems to be the last episode tonight. Have they made a Christmas special? I hope so

SirChenjins · 24/10/2024 18:38

Oh no - really? Really hope there’s a Christmas special (providing Siegfried doesn’t get together with wafty archeologist lady).

Yeah, channel 5 are saying 6/6 which is a shame because I love watching this on a Thursday night

Same - it’s the highlight of my evening! That’s been a quick series.

MyOtherProfile · 24/10/2024 19:54

Surely there must be a Christmas special?

CarmelaBrunella · 24/10/2024 19:55

I hope so! I really love this series and wish it was longer.

JewelleryCat · 24/10/2024 20:48

I’m glad there’s a Christmas special but I can’t imagine filming it in June in hot weather!

MyOtherProfile · 24/10/2024 21:01

Don't worry, I'm sure there will be snow 😆
