Silent Witness - news series for 2024 starts tonight - what will our multi tasking pathologists get up to this time.

I know fron the last series that many think this is a series that should have quietly been taken of air years ago.

But the telly addicts thread last time was so funny that it made it worth watching just to be able to join in the comments.

As our two lead characters have zero chemistry and barely speak, and they rarely do any actual pathology, one can only speculate what even more far fetched adventure they will get up to this series.

Not forgetting each more implausible fashion get up Nikki will be wearing to work each episode.

I said to my dd as we were watching to not leave cap lady on her own next to the computer!
And about why was the widow allowed to type to Cornflower. She could have typed anything, warning them if she was on their side, and wouldn't have been able to do anything about it.
It was a missed opportunity to not show the crash. Could have added to the excitement. Should have guessed they weren't going to be in it again given the big boss did not say a word when he came to the office.
Would insulin still remain inside a phial which had been in a fire as intense as that one was?
I did have to Google prerogative to check how it was meant to be spelt as I forgot about the first R.
We were watching it on iPlayer so it started to autoplay the pilot of Waking the Dead. I wasn't really watching it due to a migraine, but I remember really enjoying the series. Might have to rewatch it.

Oh, and forgot, but I said to my dd that some of you wouldn't be impressed with the relationship bit. I quite like their dynamic and they seem to bring out the best in each other.

I thought Cara's work placement had ended and she was there because of reasons?

I used to enjoy hate watching SW but I'm not sure I will do for much longer.

Wolfcub · 08/02/2024 17:57

Just catching up with this weeks. Depressing they can't get standard government positions correct. What the feck is a deputy secretary

GrandHighPoohbah · 08/02/2024 18:03

Well this week's was beyond silly. May going to meet Cornflower would surely be accompanied by a plain clothes police officer, not Jack "Omni-Job" Hodgson?

diddl · 08/02/2024 18:05

Well that was a lesson in be careful at what you look at & who you trust!

I like the premise of SW & a lot of the storylines it's the execution of it!

Does anyone find the way Velvy speaks really irritating?

So slow & droning & as if he barely understands what he is saying!

The acting in this episode is truly appalling. Between Velvy and the Journalist its very amateur panto

CharmedCult · 08/02/2024 18:40

Another week of total randoms being given access to the Lyell centre.

The place would be the subject of a serious investigation in reality with anyone and everyone having access to the computers, forensic evidence, inside info on active police investigations, etc, etc.

Its so utterly ridiculously unbelievable.

Yes it really was!

Wolfcub · 08/02/2024 19:13

Also do they not have police stations to question people in. Why do they keep bringing suspects to a private company building

LittleMonks11 · 08/02/2024 20:28

Just finished the Myanmar set.

Jack is the best cop that never was.

Julie Graham acting very odd. She's normally really good.

Too many identikit knuckle heads. Couldn't keep up with who was ex cop thug, cyber thug, journo thug and just general thug.

Cyber baddie woman's disguise outfit of cap and flasher Mac so comical.

Nikki definitely has a rider saying she must have clothes from Wise, Me & Em, clogs by Hasbeens and hair by Nicky Clarke. And 1950s kissing only with Jack.

I kept expecting Sean Pertwee to say 'In this week's skills test...'

What happened to the permanently scoffing translator?

And who knew prerogative had an 'r' in it?

On we plod.

Hellocatshome · 08/02/2024 20:32

I dont think they can explain away Velvy's way of speaking with him being from a different culture. It sounds like every word he says its the first time he's heard it spoken.

And DH and I both had to look away from the kiss as I've never seen two people kiss who looked less like they wanted to kiss it was just awkward.

IwantToRetire · 08/02/2024 20:57

1950s kissing only

I'm enjoying the Jewish character Velvy Schur, played by Alistair Michael who is also Jewish. I've read that Alistair grew up in Manchester speaking English and was not very connected to the Jewish community. He has had to learn to speak Yiddish, helped by the Jewish advisor on the show, as that would have been Velvy's first language in the Orthodox Jewish community he grew up in. I think his accent and hesitancy fit very well with English being Velvy's second language and with him being in a very different environment in the Lyell Centre compared to his family and cultural background. Some previous posts about him and another character have made me feel uncomfortable, particularly questioning whether he has Learning Disabilities and calling him odd - both for the Velvy Jewish character and for people with Learning Disabilities.

IwantToRetire · 09/02/2024 01:52

This might be true, but only if you are aware of who Velvy is. I do remember his story line but anyone starting to watch since he first joined the cast wouldn't know. And responses to his character cant in anyway be said to be about him being Jewish. There is nothing to say that is who he is (athough I think to begin with he had kept his long sidelocks).

In terms of understanding not only that English isn't his first language, and that he has little experience of being in and part of a wide community, how would you know.

ie if the script writers are seriously trying to show his journey from his roots and the consequence of him leaving them, there need to be ongoing hints in the dialogue. Not just Nikki saying is Velvey not coping, but some sort of allusion to him having to adapt to a totally different world and mourning the loss of contact with his wife and children.

ie instead of having he man Jack droning on and boring all of us and Nikki, they could have had a grown up conversation about Velvy and the journey his is making. Particularly as he is now living in Jack's house, and given that they gave air time to the really stupid notion that to feel really alive as a man you have to beat the shit out of someone.

I think it is the script writers doing a tick box exercise that is the problem.

Not sure which other character the comment was about.

I like velvy as a character but I just cannot get into this series at all

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 11/02/2024 08:08

Well that was good not

Nikki & jack not believable.

People walking in & out of the Lyell with no security or anything. Not believable.

Cap as a disguise. My dog could have better disguise.

Improve story lines or put the show out of its misery.

watcherintherye · 11/02/2024 09:18

Yes, not much creativity or characterisation happening. It reminds me of how shocked I was some years ago, when a friend with a child younger than mine, showed me the type of writing homework her primary age child was getting, where they had to write a story and make sure it contained a whole long list of different grammatical constructions, conjunctions, similes, metaphors etc.etc. By the time they’d shoehorned everything in, there wasn’t much room left for creative writing.

SideshowAuntSallyx · 11/02/2024 09:34

I've just had to undelete as I can't remember half of what happened. Must have fallen asleep due to jetlag.

What was with the graveyard scene, are we going to have Jack and Nikki have children now?

Found Sean Pertwee distracting, kept thinking I was watching Masterchef.

Motnight · 11/02/2024 09:42

Agree with @IwantToRetire regarding Velvy and his back story.

I liked these 2 latest episodes though laughed out loud when one of the minor characters asked what he was doing at the Lyall! We ask ourselves that every episode.

I am glad that (so far) it hasn't been all about Nikki and Jack's relationship. We need no more than the graveyard kiss thank you very much.

IwantToRetire · 11/02/2024 18:29

Am beginning to think they must have this no touch relationship written into their contracts.

Tonight's episode was a bit different. I missed the first five minutes.

FiveFoxes · 12/02/2024 22:10

I thought tonight's episode was really good. Interesting for once and lots of pathology.

JodieFostersFurHood · 12/02/2024 22:18

I was reading that the WYSE clothing company owner is her friend hence all the clothes.

longtompot · 12/02/2024 22:27

We really enjoying this evenings episode and dd said she wanted to watch the next one straight away. But we shall wait until tomorrow.

I wondered if it was a hazing thing to do with the army chap on the black merc. Just because of how different each death was.

I'm rubbish with names, so who was the woman's husband at the end who she said he was a monster and created a monster? Also, she looked very similar to ovarian cancer woman in last nights Call The Midwife.
