BOAT STORY. SUN 9pm bbc 1 - TV PACE NO SPOILERS

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/11/2023 14:57

This looks really good - it will be on iPlayer so no bingeing /spoilers please as this is tv paced !!

If you're tired of the same-old detective dramas, Boat Story might prove to be a refreshing breath of sea air.

In a sense, Boat Story feels like a natural escalation, cranking up the chaos on every front as two ordinary people – Samuel (Paterson Joseph) and Janet (Daisy Haggard)
– discover a shipment of cocaine washed up on their sleepy coastal town.

As the only witnesses, they decide to scarper with the illegal substance in the hope that selling it on could change their lives forever, but the authorities are on their trail – as well as a bloodthirsty crime boss.

Boat Story follows the disastrous events that unfold after Samuel and Janet steal an enormous stash of cocaine from a menacing crime boss after it washes up in their sleepy seaside town.

They hope to quickly sell on the supply for a huge sum of money, but quickly find its not so easy to set foot in the murky world of organised crime and escape unscathed.

With an unconventional narrative structure and regular sprinklings of dark humour, Boat Story looks to be one of the more unusual offerings on the BBC's scripted drama line-up this year.

The cast of Boat Story is led by Daisy Haggard (Back to Life (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/back-to-life-season-3-release-date/)) and Paterson Joseph (Peep Show), who play the hapless individuals suddenly thrown into a potentially deadly criminal conspiracy.

Atop their list of worries is a crime boss called The Tailor, played chillingly by Baptiste (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/baptiste-cast-characters/)
's Tchéky Karyo, who is rather keen to get his highly valuable produce back.

Craig Fairbrass (One Piece (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/fantasy/anime/one-piece-season-2-netflix/)) co-stars as his brutal enforcer, Guy, while Joanna Scanlan (The Larkins (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-larkins-season-3-release/)) plays a local woman named Pat, who finds herself drawn into the rapidly spiralling events.

Rounding out the cast of Boat Story is Phil Daniels (Inside No. 9 (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/inside-no-9-season-9-release-date/)
), Adam Gillen (Benidorm), Michele Austin (
This is Going to Hurt (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/this-going-hurt-season-2-release-date/)
), Jonas Armstrong (Hollington Drive), Ethan Lawrence (
After Life (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/after-life-season-4-exclusive-newsupdate/)
), plus screen newcomers Oliver Sheridan and Cherie Gordon.

BBC One's This Is Going to Hurt is based on the memoir of the same name by ex-doctor Adam Kay, but will there be a second season and who could star in it?

For those of you who are loving the gore and violence how do you feel when you watch the news straight afterwards and there are people suffering the exact same violence in real life

I switched over after the mangled hand bit. I imagine it's close to impossible to see this type of thing as entertainment if you or someone you know has encountered cruelty, stupidity or violence that reflects what was shown, even to a small degree. People do have different tolerances though and can see it and enjoy it. I just won't be watching it with them and would take a thriller over a horror any day of the week. Probably not on a Sunday night though!

LudicrousDickbiscuit · 21/11/2023 11:05

It reminded me of the BBC Outlaws - swinging genre from scary to funny to deep character to pathos. However watching over my lunchtime was not a good idea.

the80sweregreat · 21/11/2023 11:12

I don't find it that odd as I have read fiction that is a bit similar and I like the Coen Brother films too which tends to have similar ( ish ) plots
I've no idea, but I bet the policeman meets a sticky end and Pat Thoo runs off with the Tailor
Or Alan saves the day? Just a guess
Janet's Russian accent is better than her northern one.

I think it's great, far more interesting than many of the recent BBC dramas*, and easily better than Wolf which never quite hit the mark for me.

*The exception being The Sixth Commandment which was excellent

the80sweregreat · 21/11/2023 12:42

I didn't mind Wolf, although I can't remember the plot very well! It was a bit strange.
Agree that the sixth commandment was v good

I find the singing unusual but love the black comedy humour of the programme

Obv I can see the diff between fact(news life) and fiction

Loving Baptiste role. I thought pat was a gonna but instead she had a French penis and she makes pasty's which he loves

It's meant to be taken Lightly

So yes I'm enjoying it

Bbc can do good dramas

I was looking forward to this but thought it was awful. Trying to be clever and ridiculously unnecessarily violent. So many moments where I just thought, 'well that wouldn't happen'. It's made me angry how rubbish it was!

butterpuffed · 22/11/2023 13:38

I've only seen the first episode , loving it so far . Dark humour and quirky , what's not to like !

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/11/2023 13:43

Hi fives @butterpuffed

I think either some people like a black comedy

Like Alice. Think that was the name of a series that was black comedy about death lf her husband

It is extremely dark! I just hope that the baddies get some comeuppance !!
Nice to see Craig Fairbrass , I've always fancied him even though he isn't very pleasant in this !!

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/11/2023 14:44

Oh he's. He was lovely in EASTENDERS

I binged it in 2 days. Best thing I've watched in ages. The casting is brilliant.

I met Craig Fairbrass when he was in Eastenders as he was signing books in my local Tesco. He was an absolute gent and sat my then 2 year old on his knee for a pic. Probably not encouraged these days though!

His reaction when he ate his pasty was so funny. He's a great actor.

One of my favourite bits and the fact Joanna Scanlon’s character has THE BEST Pastie Shop under the flat 😁 I love her as an actress. No Offence is one of my favourite series.

I like this, but the graphic violence is too much for me. I have to look away. I think the suggestion is enough eg in The Tailor’s tongue scene. I don’t think they need to take it as far as they have.

Can't do links, but on telly addicts I've started a spoiler thread.

Are you sure it’s in Telly Addicts? I can’t find it (no interest in spending four hours of my life watching the rest, but I’m interested to know the end).

diddl · 23/11/2023 15:26

the80sweregreat · 23/11/2023 15:58

I've watched beyond episode 3 so can't post here but haven't watched all so have to avoid the spoiler thread!

newnamethanks · 26/11/2023 17:19

It's Liam! He used to be such a lovely boy, poor Les would be devastated at how he's turned out.

newnamethanks · 26/11/2023 21:00

I've binged it, unintentionally, so apologies and no spoilers but highly recommend everyone sticks with it.
