Blondeshavemorefun · 13/11/2023 14:57

This looks really good - it will be on iPlayer so no bingeing /spoilers please as this is tv paced !!

If you're tired of the same-old detective dramas, Boat Story might prove to be a refreshing breath of sea air.

In a sense, Boat Story feels like a natural escalation, cranking up the chaos on every front as two ordinary people – Samuel (Paterson Joseph) and Janet (Daisy Haggard)
– discover a shipment of cocaine washed up on their sleepy coastal town.

As the only witnesses, they decide to scarper with the illegal substance in the hope that selling it on could change their lives forever, but the authorities are on their trail – as well as a bloodthirsty crime boss.

Boat Story follows the disastrous events that unfold after Samuel and Janet steal an enormous stash of cocaine from a menacing crime boss after it washes up in their sleepy seaside town.

They hope to quickly sell on the supply for a huge sum of money, but quickly find its not so easy to set foot in the murky world of organised crime and escape unscathed.

With an unconventional narrative structure and regular sprinklings of dark humour, Boat Story looks to be one of the more unusual offerings on the BBC's scripted drama line-up this year.

The cast of Boat Story is led by Daisy Haggard (Back to Life (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/back-to-life-season-3-release-date/)) and Paterson Joseph (Peep Show), who play the hapless individuals suddenly thrown into a potentially deadly criminal conspiracy.

Atop their list of worries is a crime boss called The Tailor, played chillingly by Baptiste (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/baptiste-cast-characters/)
's Tchéky Karyo, who is rather keen to get his highly valuable produce back.

Craig Fairbrass (One Piece (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/fantasy/anime/one-piece-season-2-netflix/)) co-stars as his brutal enforcer, Guy, while Joanna Scanlan (The Larkins (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-larkins-season-3-release/)) plays a local woman named Pat, who finds herself drawn into the rapidly spiralling events.

Rounding out the cast of Boat Story is Phil Daniels (Inside No. 9 (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/inside-no-9-season-9-release-date/)
), Adam Gillen (Benidorm), Michele Austin (
This is Going to Hurt (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/this-going-hurt-season-2-release-date/)
), Jonas Armstrong (Hollington Drive), Ethan Lawrence (
After Life (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/after-life-season-4-exclusive-newsupdate/)
), plus screen newcomers Oliver Sheridan and Cherie Gordon.

BBC One's This Is Going to Hurt is based on the memoir of the same name by ex-doctor Adam Kay, but will there be a second season and who could star in it?

I found it a bit weird. I’ve watched episode 2 as well. No spoilers. Not sure I’ll stick with it.

Same level of shocks gore wise or not so bad? <without spoilers just a warning lol>.

DuncinToffee · 20/11/2023 12:42

About the same level I would say

I missed the beginning, did it say included scenes that folk may find distressing?

As I said it was more black humour so I could cope it just surprised me. The clips made out it was a light drama on par with 'The Man In The Canoe' so the crushed hand, tongue and police station scenes didn't seem inkeeping somehow.

I think this was my problem. From the preview clips I was expecting an intriguing drama/ comedy with some dark humour. If there was a warning before that it contained scenes of torture and extreme, casual violence, I would have watched something else. I'm not as angry as I was last night. My anger was probably more at being hoodwinked by the BBC into thinking it was something it wasn't.

I do think 9pm was too early for the level of violence shown and that it is sad to have it as mainstream entertainment with the real life casual violence encountered in the middle East and Ukraine.

the80sweregreat · 20/11/2023 13:45

I liked the narration , bit different, but the police station scene was shocking , even if it was meant to be more cartoon violence than real life violence.
Janet's accent sounded a bit false , be interesting if anyone on here is from Yorkshire ( or wherever it's meant to be set) and tell me if it was just a bit dodgy or really bad!?
I assume Samuel isn't dead then ? He could be a baddie ? ..
I'm shocked the boat wasn't called in before they found it , but I guess you need poetic license at times!
I'll stick with it

the80sweregreat · 20/11/2023 13:47

Reminded me of a Tarantino film
Also like 'the outlaws' that was on a few years ago too

crumblingschools · 20/11/2023 15:13

I am saddened that programmes now seem to have to have more violence, swearing, nudity and drug taking (nearly every programme seems to show someone snorting cocaine) and that it is much more normal to show this at 9pm on mainstream tv. I'm no Mary Whitehouse but is it all really necessary?

crumblingschools · 20/11/2023 15:14

@the80sweregreat I wouldn't watch a Tarantino film because I would know what to expect in one of his films, but I don't want all post 9pm tv programmes to be like a Tarantino film

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/11/2023 16:06

Surely that's the point of the watershed ?

If shown at 7pm fair enough

9 is fine

Enjoying the story and the dark humour - but not the ‘cartoon violence’ - let’s face it we have enough casual and intended violence in the world as it is

Bunionbabe · 20/11/2023 16:34

It's not what time it's shown that's the problem, it's that showing extreme violence snd sadism as mainstream BBC TV entertainment is depressing. It's usually a young female victim though, so at least it's a change.

Robbiesraft · 20/11/2023 16:46

@Blondeshavemorefun but the time IS an issue. The transition to more adult material at 9pm shouldn't be unduly abrupt, and the strongest material should be shown later in the evening - according to Ofcoms own code. I should be able to trust the mainstream broadcasters at the very least to adhere to the code. In the case of this programme, I don't believe it did.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/11/2023 17:40

What so 10pm would have been better

Whateveryouwant1 · 20/11/2023 17:54

I found it very fargo and that was difficult to watch sometimes and to find funny as it's a bit shocking and you're meant to laugh at it. I'll try 2nd episode as I want to find out what the head is about

the80sweregreat · 20/11/2023 18:48

There are a spate of violent things on atm
'Kin 'was on later on Saturday night at 9.35 pm ( bbc one) and that felt right for the type of drama that it was. Maybe this is meant to be more ' light hearted' I guess , more of a black comedy ?

hardrada · 20/11/2023 19:20

Liked the sound of this on seeing the trailer but wasn't prepared for the explicit gore and violence. Just felt a bit too stylised and OTT. I lasted about 15 mins and thought 'nah, not for me'. I don't want to see someone having their tongue pulled out on a Sunday evening. Wednesday maybe.... but Sundays I want something less challenging like Poldark or Downton Abbey,

RedRiverShore4 · 20/11/2023 19:31

I'm on the second episode now, it is very Coen brothers style.

RockaLock · 20/11/2023 20:30

I hate the trying-to-be-cool-and-quirky narration and silent-movie-style text screens. I don't know exactly why, but they always really annoy me. Maybe because they are usually completely unnecessary.

So that put me off from the outset, but I was prepared to give it a chance.

I didn't love it, I have to say. It felt a bit try-hard. DH seemed to enjoy it, though, so I guess we'll watch a few more episodes at least. Maybe it'll grow on me.

the80sweregreat · 20/11/2023 20:32

These dramas have lots of characters and I often have problems keeping up with who is who , plus many always seem to be filmed in the dark too !
( thank goodness for sub titles )

newnamethanks · 20/11/2023 21:37

Buckets of blood for those who, like that kind of thing. It's becoming irksome. Halfway through Ep 2.

MadeOfAllWork · 20/11/2023 21:40

I liked it but I felt the police station scene was too much.

Jewelanemone · 20/11/2023 21:44

I've watched 4 episodes today. I'm really enjoying it, but the gore continues - just to warn the squeamish!

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/11/2023 21:57

Slightly behind as never got to see via iPlayer

Poor mr monkey dad

Christ almighty. They’re not holding back on the violence are they? That man had children.

Dulra · 20/11/2023 22:06

I'm still intrigued by it. Yes the violence is hard to watch but it is no worse than the Fargo series which was always a 9pm start, there were 4 seasons of that! It feels like a mash up between Fargo and a series of unfortunate events. I was surprised Jonas Armstrong was killed off so early, I thought he would have been a bigger character

the80sweregreat · 20/11/2023 22:06

It reminds me a bit of a book by Kate Atkinson ( a Jackson Brodie one) but far more violent
It's a kind of mash up of many different things
I like The taylor character, but only because it's the nice man out of ' missing'! Horrible character here though.
