This looks really good - it will be on iPlayer so no bingeing /spoilers please as this is tv paced !!

If you're tired of the same-old detective dramas, Boat Story might prove to be a refreshing breath of sea air.

In a sense, Boat Story feels like a natural escalation, cranking up the chaos on every front as two ordinary people – Samuel (Paterson Joseph) and Janet (Daisy Haggard)
– discover a shipment of cocaine washed up on their sleepy coastal town.

As the only witnesses, they decide to scarper with the illegal substance in the hope that selling it on could change their lives forever, but the authorities are on their trail – as well as a bloodthirsty crime boss.

Boat Story follows the disastrous events that unfold after Samuel and Janet steal an enormous stash of cocaine from a menacing crime boss after it washes up in their sleepy seaside town.

They hope to quickly sell on the supply for a huge sum of money, but quickly find its not so easy to set foot in the murky world of organised crime and escape unscathed.

With an unconventional narrative structure and regular sprinklings of dark humour, Boat Story looks to be one of the more unusual offerings on the BBC's scripted drama line-up this year.

The cast of Boat Story is led by Daisy Haggard (Back to Life (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/back-to-life-season-3-release-date/)) and Paterson Joseph (Peep Show), who play the hapless individuals suddenly thrown into a potentially deadly criminal conspiracy.

Atop their list of worries is a crime boss called The Tailor, played chillingly by Baptiste (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/baptiste-cast-characters/)
's Tchéky Karyo, who is rather keen to get his highly valuable produce back.

Craig Fairbrass (One Piece (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/fantasy/anime/one-piece-season-2-netflix/)) co-stars as his brutal enforcer, Guy, while Joanna Scanlan (The Larkins (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-larkins-season-3-release/)) plays a local woman named Pat, who finds herself drawn into the rapidly spiralling events.

Rounding out the cast of Boat Story is Phil Daniels (Inside No. 9 (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/inside-no-9-season-9-release-date/)
), Adam Gillen (Benidorm), Michele Austin (
This is Going to Hurt (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/this-going-hurt-season-2-release-date/)
), Jonas Armstrong (Hollington Drive), Ethan Lawrence (
After Life (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/after-life-season-4-exclusive-newsupdate/)
), plus screen newcomers Oliver Sheridan and Cherie Gordon.

BBC One's This Is Going to Hurt is based on the memoir of the same name by ex-doctor Adam Kay, but will there be a second season and who could star in it?

I don't think I can watch the next episode. The shoot up in the police station was too much for me! I watch murder documentaries and crime series so not at all squeamish but it was so unnecessary. Also how on earth can two men shoot a whole police station and no one on the outside be alerted?! Nobody raising the alarm to outside forces? You see I'm too logical ha ha. It's going to annoy me for lots and lots of reasons 😂

Violetparis · 19/11/2023 22:30

Gave up after 20 mins, found it annoying, sweary and gory for the sake of it.

You have never obv watched her in breeders

Where every other sentence has fuck in it

You also won't like Kin then

That has a lot of fucks in it as well

We've been waiting for this for more than a year

They did a little bit of filming near by.

My husband thought that he could get in the shots.

I'm not sure that I liked it.

dapsnotplimsolls · 19/11/2023 22:40

As others have said, very like Fargo. I'm not sure if I'll stick with it or not.

Blondeshavemorefun I don't mind swearing in tv shows, in this though it just seemed forced.

Sholkedabemus · 19/11/2023 23:01

Everything we’ve watched lately is full of fucks. We watched Succession and every other word was fuck. We watched soldier and no one could speak a single sentence without saying fuck. Is it drama mirroring real life, or the other way around?

Anyway, we will carry on watching, we like black humour. Am I allowed to say black in that context?

Robbiesraft · 19/11/2023 23:06

I got as far as the police station shoot out. Awful. Too bloody for me. I only watched that far due to previously really liking the two lead actors. Not what I was expecting from a Sunday night BBC drama. Set me up badly for the working week. Fuck you BBC.

It makes me question if this is even appropriate for prime time tv with all the horror of 7 October and its aftermath stil ringing in our ears. Self indulgent and not as clever as it needed to be to pull it off.

AnyFucker · 19/11/2023 23:09

Gave it a chance but it’s not for me. It could have been a lot better without the forced quirkiness.

SabrinaThwaite · 19/11/2023 23:09

Mmmm. It seems a bit try hard?

I think someone has watched Reservoir Dogs too many times.

longtompot · 19/11/2023 23:10

I'm not sure if I liked this. It had echo's of Amelie about it, maybe a bit Baz Lurhman, but didn't quite hit the mark. I love Daisy Haggard, and I thought I'd love this because of of her, but I'm not.
I'll try again next week but it might be one I don't continue watching.

Spoilers if you've not watched it yet

My dh was a bit confused at the end and I had to explain several times the head and the man picking it up were one and the same.

Pinktops · 19/11/2023 23:11

@Blondeshavemorefun thank you, this looks good 😊

WingingItSince1973 · 19/11/2023 23:30

I've read the write up someone posted up thread and they writers do say it's quite dimensional and the characters are not quite what they seem. So maybe might watch another one but yeah the violence and the swearing for a bit annoying. But then if I'd found a boat with two dead bodies and a whole lot of drugs I might say a dam it or two 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/11/2023 23:33

It's tv. It's drama and a bit of black comedy and yes fine to say that

As I said previously if you don't like this you won't like kin. Which I also really liked

OP posts:
Janiie · 20/11/2023 07:45

Thought this was quite good. Yes the violence was ott but done in a Tarantino black humour style so not actually offensive. Of course police stations would have all kinds of alarms and probably bullet proof screens but nevermind, I doubt massive amounts of drugs are transported on rickety teeny boats either.

If I'm going to be nit picky it would have been obvious by all the footprints at the boat that someone had found it first so a cursory glance at road traffic cameras in the local area would have quickly found who the one car near the scene belonged to. But still, I'll let them off for that.

Loving Baptiste as The evil tailor!

Bunionbabe · 20/11/2023 08:15

Fordian · 19/11/2023 22:26

Okay. Once again. 20 minutes in and there's someone about to get his tongue cut out.

What the actual fuck is wrong with us?

Why is this entertaining?

I guess it may be because I've done a lot of time in front-line NHS thus have an understanding of the hideous violence of so much of life.

It's pretty disgusting.

I agree, once upon a time graphic violence like this would have been an 18cert at the cinema. Also all the swearing which is lazy writing imo. Not a good choice for a Sunday eve drama. Bring back Midwife.

crumblingschools · 20/11/2023 08:25

Not sure we need so much violence whilst there is so much like that going on in the real world. Even DH who has a much higher tolerance of tv violence than me, thought it was too much and unnecessary

diddl · 20/11/2023 08:31

I didn't get any further than her losing her hand...

1975wasthebest · 20/11/2023 08:45

AnyFucker · 19/11/2023 23:09

I agree. The actual story is a good one, but the execution doesn’t work. The gratuitous violence is also off-putting, and some of the casting I don’t find believable.

I’ve watched the second episode and it doesn’t get any better, so I’m out.

In the case of Kin and swearing it is definitely drama mirroring real life. The Irish are very fond of their colourful language. To the point that all the swearing in this didn't even register with me 😬

DuncinToffee · 20/11/2023 09:07

I liked it, don't mind the swearing. It was a bit graphic at times but the black comedy offsets that for me.

I have watched the 2nd episode, will be back tonight when it is finished on tv.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/11/2023 09:28

I will sneak a boat in as clashes with iacgmooh but will report back at 10'

OP posts:
Janiie · 20/11/2023 11:25

I missed the beginning, did it say included scenes that folk may find distressing?

As I said it was more black humour so I could cope it just surprised me. The clips made out it was a light drama on par with 'The Man In The Canoe' so the crushed hand, tongue and police station scenes didn't seem inkeeping somehow.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 20/11/2023 11:29

I found it a bit weird. I’ve watched episode 2 as well. No spoilers. Not sure I’ll stick with it.
