On bbc one Sunday and Mondays
Six parts
So far only up to episode four and hope to finish soon.
Anyone wishing to post spoilers can here , but not on the other main thread
Loving the darkness of it and I think Samuel is dodgy ( as it's mentioned during the play , episode two I think ?)

Could you be bothered to do a recap of what has happened so far?

I only managed about 15mins!

Shame as I was looking forward to it & it sounded intriguing.

Maybe if you find a boat carrying drugs there aren't that many possible scenarios though!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/11/2023 22:12

I think it could've been condensed to 4 parts but I'm enjoying it,I'm on episode 5.

CheerfulBunny · 23/11/2023 22:17

I was surprised at how gory it is. The bit with the tongue! And her hand!! 😮

KnickerlessParsons · 23/11/2023 22:41

Finished it this evening. Loved it!

the80sweregreat · 24/11/2023 06:20

I finished watching it last night.
The film noir was well done and so many twists and turns. I actually started to believe that The Tailor was in love with Pat and her Pasty's , but clearly not :(
Guy was my favorite character ( despite the many killings ) but only because I have a soft spot for Craig Fairbrass

So what happened to Janet and Samuel? Did they get away with spending the proceeds from the cocaine sale?

EveryKneeShallBow · 24/11/2023 11:14

Was there actually any point dramatically speaking to her losing her hand? Was it integral to the plot, or just for shock value?

the80sweregreat · 24/11/2023 11:24

I felt that us seeing Janet's accident was to hi light how unfair it was that they didn't pay her the right compensation and then she found her herself unable to work and had lost everything and found herself skint and alone.
I think that although she was reluctant to get involved at first with Samuel's plan , she probably then thought ' why not ? I've been done over over by life, let's see what happens'
She was the brains behind a lot of it by being savvy and clever enough to get out a few tight spots too, despite her disability.
The one i felt sorry for the most was Ben though
I'd hoped he would be spared.

This, I stopped watching after the tongue bit.

It was billed as a dark comedy.

I know I'm a wimp but that to me was horror!!

AngelasEyelash · 24/11/2023 21:55

I thought it started strongly then lost its way. It felt like the writers tried to shoehorn twists & turns to be clever, rather than moving the story along - like the false head and the play. Felt it was trying to be the next Killing Eve but never quite got there. Some of it was filmed near me, so enjoyed spotting familiar settings

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/11/2023 23:36

I've finished it now, it was good but 2 episodes too long imo.

I really hated Daisy Goodwin's northern accent,it grated like mad every time she spoke.

diddl · 25/11/2023 10:41

Is anyone going to post any spoilers?

Nooooo does Pat meet a gruesome end? Shock. I hope her chubby son the PC comes out of it a hero. Not holding my breath..

the80sweregreat · 26/11/2023 17:00

Ben ( sadly ) dies
Pat does survive

pickledandpuzzled · 26/11/2023 17:02

I do keep thinking about it, as though it was a proper quality film noir! I keep getting black and white images of Madame Bethune!

Oh no! Is it quick and painless, I can't cope with anything horrific particularly if it involves tongues.

the80sweregreat · 26/11/2023 17:07

Guy kills Ben in Janet's caravan , but we don't see it happen.

OP posts:
oviedo · 26/11/2023 22:25

Really loved this! Laugh out loud moments contrasting with utter carnage with a brilliant script and great main characters.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/11/2023 22:45

I thought it was brilliant. Such clever storytelling, well written script and wonderful characters.
Dh couldn’t handle the violence and it struck me it was almost entirely violence against men rather than women and none of it sexualised (obviously the Tailor’s motive with Pat was sexual but it wasn’t filmed in a sexualised way.) All the women characters were just as rounded as the men characters.
Poor Ben.
We were annoyed with the pottery teacher encouraging Guy to give up after one bad lesson. Maybe if he had ended up in prison he would have had a better teacher in there.

the80sweregreat · 27/11/2023 06:25

I found the moral behind the pottery class was a bit ' be careful what you wish for' .
I remember going to a step class in the 90s and was told ' you haven't any co ordination '
I didn't go back ! I hope the teacher has discovered that encouraging people is better in order to keep them coming and paying. Not that step classes are popular anymore.
I did feel sorry for Ben , over looked at work and at home and right all along too about the criminals.

OP posts:
pickledandpuzzled · 27/11/2023 07:22

There was the message to about remaining who you are. Leopards can’t change their spots.
Perhaps the essential nature of character.

The young prisoner who was going to go straight
The gambler
The arsehole ex turning religious
The hitman
The evil mastermind

And the positive character- the mum remains a mum above all else.

The hand was necessary to show why an essentially moral person would get caught up in it all.

the80sweregreat · 27/11/2023 07:48

The ending was shocking , but only because I didn't see it coming
I honestly thought he loved Pat and they might even be happy together. How wrong we were
Guy being told by his wife to ' put out the bins' made me laugh. Even cold hearted assassins have to do the every day stuff
Although I can't forgive him for killing poor old Ben :(

I was sure that Ben would have body armour on and would recover...

oviedo · 27/11/2023 13:02

I think that would have been a better ending actually.
In the epilogue bit where they talked about Pat not wanting to do anything exciting again it ignored the massive elephant in the room that she has lost her son and that is what will dominate her life from now on.
I can see they will have wanted to not trivialise shooting by having him pop up again perfectly fine but it meant trivialising bereavement instead.
