Starting today - Howard's Way is showing every week day at 2pm on the Drama Channel.

That theme tune takes me right back to the eighties and Sunday evenings!!! I grew up in the Midlands so had no idea about half of the terms but loved it!

In our household most episodes were spent mimicking Leo's pout! 😂

Iamthewombat · 16/01/2023 16:09

I’ve gone off Ken. It was the sight of him sitting on Jan’s sofa proudly displaying beige shiny loafers with white socks. No Ken, no.

But I did like the bit where we see a wooden boat being built to an accompaniment of harpsichord music (??!!), then cut to the chandlery where Ken pours whisky into Paris goblets before showing off to Gerald about his lease acquisition.

I’m not even 15 minutes in yet. It’s great.

Iamthewombat · 16/01/2023 16:12

Charles calls his yacht ‘a mobile pied a terre’ with a straight face! And says “I hope you like caviar, beluga, I prefer it” when romancing Lynne!

Iamthewombat · 16/01/2023 18:13

I need Snowflake’s mind bleach and we haven’t even got to the Sade snake hipped gyrating yet.

Charles Frere saying, “I’d like to make love to you” VOM. And Lynne falling for it!!!

Tom posing manfully by Avril’s desk in his action slacks and short sleeved shirt replete with breast pockets, denying being a bad husband!

Ken seducing Jan over champagne in Cannes by saying, “I’m in love with you, you know”. Her saying, “I’m scared Ken” and him saying, “so am I”. Who was writing the dialogue? Lock them up!

Ken tucking into his full English in Cannes and slurping his cup of tea whilst Jan talks to Clod about visiting aristocrats and Armenian millionaires on yachts ‘flying the Italian flag’. Although the Ken actor was 100% hamming it up and taking the piss.

But worst of all, worst of all, Ken dropping into Jan’s luxurious chambre bearing a paper bag and saying ‘nibbles?’ in a baby voice. NIBBLES. My vagina would have closed up entirely at that point.

Iamthewombat your post has me in stitches. Which is quite the achievement after a particularly crap day at work.

Action slacks has just about finished me off..

onemouseplace · 16/01/2023 18:31

I can't believe I've only just seen this thread.

It got repeated mid-afternoon at some point in the late 90s when I was at uni and I got completely addicted.

mum2jakie · 16/01/2023 20:33

OMG. I haven't had chance to watch today's episode yet. Sounds like I'm in for a rigid treat! #SmoothOperator

I prepared myself for the slinky Sade dancing, shown today, but even so the level of cringe was off the scale!

Iamthewombat · 17/01/2023 17:43

I bet they fell about laughing after the cameras stopped rolling.

marmiteadict · 17/01/2023 17:46

It was definitely played for laughs. How on earth anyone kept a straight face 😂

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 18/01/2023 06:24

Agh Howard's Way. Back in the '80's we ran a boat yard, life wasn't so glamorous for us tho.

Dougieowner · 18/01/2023 06:40

Late to this thread. ☹️

As a family we loved Howards' Way in the day, my late M&D used to frequent the Jolly Sailor and knew many of the filming locations (the interior filming however was done in the Midlands).
They had every series on DVD (which I have inherited) and I have watched the whole set several times over the years.
Yes it is of its day and completely over the top but I LOVE IT!

The theme with vocals is awful and was dropped after one series.

Iamthewombat · 19/01/2023 15:13

Love how season 2 begins the day after season 1 ended (in Howards’ Way time, I mean) and (1) Jan’s hair is 5 cm more bouffant and a different colour plus (2) the Periplus Marine Boutique has different stock and different decor.

dew141 · 20/01/2023 07:28

I've finally seen the snake hip episode. I don't think it can be eclipsed as comedy gold.

It also amuses me that they have special half sleazy, half sinister music for every scene Ken's in.

RaraRachael · 20/01/2023 11:20

i was SO disappointed in the first episode of series 2 that Ken appeared in a very boring, conservative grey suit - where was the safari look or the tight white trousers so beloved for snake-hipping in?

CF has now got himself a new roller. Maybe he thinks red is a better colour for pulling birds and "making love" to them.

Isn't Jan's mother an awful woman - how many times did she say "darling" in yesterday's conversation. Tedious old bag.

mum2jakie · 20/01/2023 15:24

I'm a few episodes behind. Still on series one. Can't believe that nobody warned me of the horror of witnessing Jan eating strawberries straight from Ken's mouth!! Vom...

This really was the stuff of nightmares. I'd blocked it out.

mum2jakie · 20/01/2023 15:28

Also a continuity issue within this episode. 8 mins in here is Avril with short hair...

40 minutes later it's long and bouffanty again!!

Haha at Avril’s hair! Love that we finished today’s episode on a fashion cliffhanger.

Now that Ken’s ‘menacing music’ has been pointed out I’m having a right old laugh, love it!

Orrin reminds me of a Mormon. Abby’s better off with whiny Leo. Liked the scene where they were dancing to Alison Moyet and Wham and drinking what looked like the dreaded Hirondelle (terrible white wine of 1980s)!

RaraRachael · 20/01/2023 20:23

The "fashions" really are something else. What on earth was Abby wearing when she put the baby to bed? I can't believe that 80s fashions were really that bad. Mind you I had a Princess Diana Peruvian sweater that was so authentic it had little bits of wood or vegetation in it - I kept wondering what the prickly feeling was.

RoseLavenderBlue · 21/01/2023 16:55

Did anyone notice Lynne’s jumpsuit in - I think, episode 11, very square with pockets in a kind of gold patchwork? I don’t remember such monstrosities in the 80’s! Though I did quite like the pink cotton jumpsuit with the big wide shoulders. Poor Lynne, just seen Charles tell Gerald to let her know he’s cancelling on her for that evening.

mum2jakie · 21/01/2023 17:11

The best I had in the eighties was a fluorescent shell suit from the local market!

dew141 · 21/01/2023 17:18

What on earth was Abby wearing when she put the baby to bed?

I think that wins the worst so far for me, I couldn't even start to describe it. With Jan's cross between a school lunch tabard and billowing coral sail a close second.

Mind you, Lynne had so much voluminous silk swirled round her in one of this week's episodes that I feared she might sashay too close to a naked candle in the yacht club. And Leo's jeans are so tight, it can't be good for his sperm health.

Please tell me we looked better than that in the 80s?!

RaraRachael · 25/01/2023 10:44

Plenty of bingo points in yesterday's episode. I loved the over dramatic music when the helicopter was around the chateau (bought by the CONSORTIUM) then who should the big cheese be but Victor Meldrew - that did make me laugh.

What is a "marine boutique" anyway. I would have thought one would sell sailing clothes, footwear etc. And the name ...... Periplus! It sounds like something for menopausal larger ladies, not a cutting edge purveyor of French designer fashion.

the whole thing is ludicrously brilliant.

PerkingFaintly · 25/01/2023 11:25

I was scared of Ken first time round. He's such a smiley manipulator, always pretending to be people's best friend, whereas CF1 is a more obvious villain.

Now I'm just finding him funny – and I certainly no longer see Jan as a poor innocent just trying her best.

It was made clear before they got together that she knows exactly what sort of man Ken is. She's sleeping with the boss to get what she wants, ie the boutique, on his dollar. If she really believed in what she was doing, she could put up her half of the house to fund it just like Tom did.
