Starting today - Howard's Way is showing every week day at 2pm on the Drama Channel.

That theme tune takes me right back to the eighties and Sunday evenings!!! I grew up in the Midlands so had no idea about half of the terms but loved it!

I'm totally hooked and binge watching Season 2 on YouTube already!

If HW were real life, I could completely see Abby constantly posting about her toxic narc mother Polly 😂It's Mumsnet bingo with those two!

RaraRachael · 12/01/2023 12:59

No sure how old Avril is meant to be. She looks in her mid 30s but everybody seems to look at least 10 years older than they actually were.

RoseLavenderBlue · 12/01/2023 14:33

This is brilliant news, I am hooked again already - I even bought the 7” single of the soundtrack when it came out back in the day! I had to look up Jan Harvey’s age and couldn’t believe she was only 38. I recall in episode 1 Tom says ‘I’m nearly 50…’ I always remember my dear old mum having an almost allergic reaction to Ken when we used to watch it when I was a teenager, she said he was so sleazy. I’m interested to see how I judge him now I’m older.

Iamthewombat · 12/01/2023 15:02

If Jack is old enough to cop off with Kate (I’m thinking 60 minimum cos Kate looks 70) Avril would have to be 30 minimum. I too have been through this thought process.

marmiteadict · 12/01/2023 15:05

The actress playing Arvil was in her thirties at the time. Would be about right for both 20 year old Leo and 40 odd year old Tom thought they were in with a chance

marmiteadict · 12/01/2023 15:46

@Iamthewombat at some point Kate says she's 10 years older than Jack. Jack was a toy boy of the era

lifeissweet · 11/01/2023 17:11

I've remembered the other parts of my Dad's Howards' Way Bingo.

Every time someone says 'let's discuss this further over dinner' (with a massive neon flashing subtext) or offers someone a drink. It happens in almost every scene.

Considering how frowned upon Jack's drink problem is, they are none of them far off rampant alcoholism. I've no idea how they get anything done.

Clod has just invited Jan to meet him later “to discuss beeezness, per’aps over deeeener?”. Ha ha ha. Your dad was spot on!

Iamthewombat · 12/01/2023 17:51

After watching today’s episode, my view is that in the Tom Howard v Ken Masters contest, there is no question that Ken wins hands down. At least you could have a bit of a laugh with him. Tom is a ploddy old plodder. To think that Jan passed up ‘a special lunch’ with Ken for being nagged by Tom over remortgaging the house! When Avril started snogging Tom on the Flying Fish to celebrate their cash flow success I was thinking NO NO AVRIL even Leo with his ironed jeans featuring crease is better than him!

red4321 · 12/01/2023 17:59

I'm with you, Ken seems surprisingly progressive. Well, apart from his raging libido, but even that's more attractive than staying chained at the kitchen sink with Tom.

I can't believe I'm even considering a man that wears a polo neck and white trousers.

marmiteadict · 12/01/2023 18:02

Completely agree. Can't believe we were all rooting for Tom over Ken back then.

Tom's a massive cock womble who wants to keep Jan at home, dependant on him financially so she'll have to tolerate his bad behaviour.

On a different note glad to see Abbey experiencing the Southampton I knew whilst at University.

Everyone locally expected me to be sipping G &T's on a yacht all day. Not the case

RaraRachael · 12/01/2023 21:03

So glad to see that Series 2 is starting next Thursday - my recorder is set.

I think Ken was seen as a bit of a wide boy who wasn't quite in the class of the other sailing fraternity members. He actually comes across as fairly normal if a tad sleazy. The scene where he and Jan did the tango was unintentionally hilarious.

Snowflake2023 · 12/01/2023 21:10

Have you seen Ken's snake hips dancing to Sade whilst he's getting in the mood to seduce Jan?

Can't decide if it's comedy gold or I need the mind bleach.

Iamthewombat · 12/01/2023 21:18

Ken's snake hips dancing to Sade whilst he's getting in the mood to seduce Jan

Please tell me that that is on tomorrow’s episode. Can’t wait!

RaraRachael · 12/01/2023 21:30

I missed that one @Iamthewombat
It's all so gloriously naff yet we were glued to our screens on a Sunday night, wishing we could have lives as glamorous as the residents of Tarrant.

I loved Cload back in the day but can't see the attraction now tbh. A Frenchman with an OTT accent is bad enough but even worse when he's actually Scottish,

Tis a thing of beauty to behold....😂

Iamthewombat · 13/01/2023 23:47

No snake-hipped Sade seduction yet but episode 10 was still great.

Bare chested post coital Tom after making sweet love with Avril NO.

Charles Frere putting the moves on Lynne ‘the car will pick you up at eight, dinner is on the yacht at 8.30’.

I have decided that the Polly Urquhart actress and Ken Masters actor were taking the piss throughout the episode. They knew that the programme was terrible, especially their lines. I swear that I saw both of them stifling a snigger in different scenes. Particularly just before Polly took her leave of Jan and Clod in the restaurant saying, “don’t wait around for me darling, I think I’ll be making my own way home!” and joined the table of a random bloke who looked like Ken Hom in a wig!

mum2jakie · 14/01/2023 08:48

Can't believe Tom was caught red handed and is still trying to blame Jan! "It could just as easily have been you and Ken." Yes, but it bloody wasn't. Jan hasn't cheated with anyone and you've just shagged another woman!!! Cheeky twat! #OverInvested

Absolutely this. Also totally over invested

Snowflake2023 · 14/01/2023 09:57

I think the slinky dancing is in episode 11 or 12. Tell me when you get there, its a corker!

Tom is such a hypocrite.

What do you mean Jan you don't want to put all our family savings and security into a business I have no commercial experience in and is facing financial ruin??? so unsupportive.

What do you mean you want to work Jan? you're supposed to stay here and make my dinner or you're a bad mother!

It's doesnt matter that I cheated Jan, we can still stay married whilst I work with my mistress and pour all our savings into a risky business.

#Overinvested here too!

Iamthewombat · 14/01/2023 11:33

Yes I was rooting for Jan when she told Tom, “our marriage is bloody OVER!”

Her voluminous duster coat made the flouncing very effective, also. Plenty of billowing. Same trick used by Peter Capaldi when he was being Cardinal Richelieu in The Musketeers.

RaraRachael · 14/01/2023 12:12

Ken Hom in a wig that actually made me laugh out loud 😅

The whole thing is utterly ludicrous, but so bad it's compulsive viewing.

lieselotte · 14/01/2023 16:13

Right at the beginning of the first episode Polly has the measure of Tom when she tells him he doesn't like women with opinions.

He reminds me a lot of my father both in terms of looks and in terms of CF-sexism.

marmiteadict · 14/01/2023 16:13

I can confirm that Ken's snake hip seduction appears 37 mins into episode 12.

I would say you're welcome but perhaps not in the circumstances

red4321 · 14/01/2023 16:21

Oh I can't wait for next week...

Although I'm still disturbed by my 40-something rethink of a man with bad sideburns, a seriously receding hairline and the snake hips. What has happened to me?

Still fancy Charles Consortium Frere, at least that hasn't changed in 35 years

Iamthewombat · 15/01/2023 11:04

Yes, roll on 2:37 pm on Tuesday. What a difference 37 years makes to one’s tastes!
