mum2jakie · 02/01/2023 14:09

Starting today - Howard's Way is showing every week day at 2pm on the Drama Channel.

That theme tune takes me right back to the eighties and Sunday evenings!!! I grew up in the Midlands so had no idea about half of the terms but loved it!

Bother, I'm at work - does drama have a catch up service?

gogohmm · 02/01/2023 21:42

It's what got me into sailing... I moved to beside a marina a couple of years ago, though still saving for the yacht (I crew for a guy down the road currently)

Sixmonthson · 02/01/2023 21:43

There’s a podcast which discusses each episode of Howard’s Way in detail. I’ll try and find it

Sixmonthson · 02/01/2023 21:47

It’s called Always There - there’s 41 episodes and I listened to every one of them!

It's repeated at 2.50am if you want to record the whole series. I think the Drama channel catch up service is through UK TV play.

My Dad had a sort of Howards Way drinking game (we weren't actually drinking as we were in our early teens). We'd mime drinking every time someone mentioned 'The Merger'

It was so melodramatic. Loved it.

mum2jakie · 02/01/2023 21:59

Oops I got my apostrophe in the wrong place. I always thought it was Howard's Way, not Howards' Way.

I didn't understand half the terms as a child. Just remember lots of excitement about something called a catamaran.

I remember it as very wooden acting....and Abbie and Leo were so wet

Oh the acting was terrible and you are spot on about those two.

There was also 'The boutique' that sold absolutely awful 80s puffy sleeved monstrosities.

It's all coming back to me now...

Those of you lamenting you'll be at work when it's on, Drama channel catch up is free on UK TVPlay. Might take a while to crop up though.

It's on already - first 12 episodes or so.

Shock

You're absolutely right.

Surely you can't possibly be referring to the inspirational, and indeed aspirational, fashion creations from the House of Howard?

2023istheyearigetmyacttogether · 02/01/2023 22:45

Is this going to be one of those things which you have really fond memories of and it turns out to be dire?
I remember watching it as an early teen every week with my mum and thinking that the characters were all terribly glamorous with the most exciting lives.

red4321 · 02/01/2023 22:46

Hmmm this is a risk. My sky box is set for 2.50am so time will tell!

Treetrim · 02/01/2023 23:37

I adored this and wanted Jans life when I grew up. It all seemed so glamorous

Tree543 · 02/01/2023 23:47

I wanted to be Lynn so seemed so confident and pretty.
The whole programme seemed very glamorous. Wasn't it supposed to be our version of Dallas/Dynasty.

pavillion1 · 02/01/2023 23:59

oh i need to look this up ... my dad used to go to play dominoes on a sunday night and my mum let me stay up .. i must of been around 8 or 9

lollipoprainbow · 03/01/2023 00:34

Loved the music !!

Yes it was and in the 80s it was a lifestyle not many families had so even though it wasn’t dynasty money, it was a extremely aspirational.

It was also pretty dire so I’m not sure it will stand up to another viewing - maybe similar in to house of Eliot in that way

RedRiverShore2 · 03/01/2023 11:31

I didn't realise this was on, I have downloaded first two episodes onto skybox, it was one of my favourite programmes

RaraRachael · 03/01/2023 12:22

I watched the first episode but don't think I'll bother with any more. My early 20s self loved the glamour of it, but it's terribly dated. The hairstyles and clothes are terrible - women wearing ecru tights (which admittedly I wore in the 60s) and Lynne who's meant to be around 20 dressing is such awful garments that are obviously meant to be fashionable but look like stuff I wouldn't be seen dead in nowadays. Even the decor is dated with flouncy curtains and chintzy patterns everywhere.

marmiteadict · 03/01/2023 17:17

Why did we cast Ken as the baddie? So far he's given Jan a full time job after her husband was made redundant, given Leo a job because he decided not to go to University and goes on to offer Jan various business opportunities such as redesigning the chandlery and creating a fashion line so she is financially independent.

Meanwhile Tom has failed to tell her for a month he is redundant, confiding in another woman and freezing his wife out, invests their life savings in a dodgy business against her will and has an affair.

And Ken is the problematic relationship?
