Starting today - Howard's Way is showing every week day at 2pm on the Drama Channel.

That theme tune takes me right back to the eighties and Sunday evenings!!! I grew up in the Midlands so had no idea about half of the terms but loved it!

@january123 Oh 😳. Can't quite believe that!! The 1980s are well and truly back in town!! Wonder if it will be like a modern day El Dorado - so bad, it was good 😊

The mind boggles!!
Bet it will be sooo bad it will be good!
Bound to wheel out Ken and Jan as the linchpins, but can't be many original characters still alive so guessing it will be children/grandchildren.

Please God Abby has disappeared off with her 6th husband into deepest darkest USA Grin

Far too investedBlush

I've been enjoying it in a sort of God-why-are-they-all-so-tetchy-with-each-other way.

Didn't watch it in the 80s. I'd assumed the final series would finish with Jan and Tom back together, but I see that's not to be.

Love the idea of a remake by Jester Productions! Grin

The script definitely seemed to be heading towards a reconciliation for Jan and Tom but presumably Maurice Colbourne's sudden death led to lots of last minute changes to the plot.

I can't remember how it ended.
I must admit to liking Ken. He's treated like a buffoon by most of the others but always comes back smiling sporting his white trousers.
I'm hoping that ghastly old goat Sir Edward is going to shuffle off soon. Pity he doesn't take Jan's awful mother with him. She was so ridiculous in that recent episode when she was talking to Jack like he was a naughty schoolboy then did a silly sort of scream at the end.

Poor Ken, he's still getting the creepy music. He really rocks those white trousers (a phrase I never thought I'd say) and I'm strangely mesmerised by how he can make his bottom lip look so large and succulent.

I'm also finding 'dahling' Kate very annoying, along with crusty Sir "I don't have to keep any bank business confidential" John. And Jan breathlessly whirling through another fashion event with the models trailing acres of superfluous material in their wake.

I didn't see Howards' Way the first time round (it's a bit before my time), but I'm watching it on UKTV Play and I'm now a big fan. Series five was a bit boring, but series six is pretty great so far, particularly this moment:

'I heard a voice from heaven saying...' 'Hello, Ken Masters' 😂

Was Kate O'Mara a really big deal at that time? I know her name and I know she was in Dynasty, I just wondered why they made her the central character in series five and why she gets a special mention in the opening titles ('Kate O'Mara as Laura Wilde', when none of the other character names are listed). I don't like her character and I don't buy her as a sex symbol (she looks a bit corpse like in series five, but better in series six).

Kate O'mara was also in Triangle. A series about a north sea ferry. They should repeat that next.

Kate was fresh from Dynasty so a big name I supppse. I agree with the pp who said that she resembles Leo’s ex, Amanda!

Good to see healthy looking models.

The admiral and Kate were married irl.

Yes !
Glossy , flicked hair
The cheekbones
The voice
And the quirked eyebrow with the knowing smile

She always had the look of Want It - Have It

Blimey, Polly doesn't hang around!

Polly is one of my favourites. Along with Sir John.

Leo bores me but that’s not a criticism of the actor at all. All the character seems to do is mooch around after Abby and get bossed about by Avril.

I do like the casting of Lynn and Leo - they really could be siblings.

Love the fizz between Jan and Ken - only realised recently that the actors are married, which would explain it.

Vanessa is as wooden as one of Jack’s boats and has zero chemistry with any of the cast. And that stiff hair - ugggh.

RaraRachael · 11/04/2023 20:44

I must admit I didn't like Polly so not sorry that she's not around any more.
What a cheek Sir Edward had shouting at Jan because she rejected him again - as if? However he's snuffed it now so it won't matter any more.
I find Kate extremely irritating, even more so than Vanessa. I can't remember how it panned out but I really hope Jan and White Trousers get together again.
I always felt that Jack was very good as he is such a curmudgeonly old stick in the mud although all that cigar smoke wafting everywhere would make me ill!

At least they've upped their game and made series 6 more interesting already that the dire boredom of series 5 - far too much talk of consortiums or should that be consortia 😂

Am a few episodes behind and have just got to the end of series five. Can't believe Abbie has had yet another accident at the end of a pregnancy! Surely this was exactly the circumstances around William's birth too? I suppose it's one way to avoid the pain of labour!

Wow Polly getting married! She has timed that very well to become a wealthy widow. And the lovely Lynn back in Tarrant too.

I've watched all of these now and I am bereft. What's everyone watching next. Can anyone recommend any other 80s nostalgia series?

Me too! DH and I watched the last episode on Saturday night. I made Horse's Neck cocktails (see penultimate episode) in honour of the occasion.

It was at least a good, satisfying ending, I think. No idea what to watch next. Triangle is on YouTube but I'm not sure I'm ready for the excitement of the cross Channel ferry...

I enjoyed this - it was better than I thought it would be. I didn’t see much of the wooden-ness in the acting that others have mentioned, with the exception of the Vanessa actress who was poor. The Kate Harvey actress was a bit “stagey” at times but given her very successful theatre background, that’s unsurprising. I loved her chemistry with her real-life husband who played the admiral and also with Jan Harvey - they were a believable mother/daughter combo and the relationship between Jan and the lovely Lynn was perfect too. Adored Jack and Avril’s scenes. The Machiavellian Polly remains my favourite character, and Gerald was wonderful as well. The camera work on the sea was great. I don’t have many criticisms really.

So sad that Maurice C and Tony A didn’t live to enjoy their retirements.
