Starting today - Howard's Way is showing every week day at 2pm on the Drama Channel.

That theme tune takes me right back to the eighties and Sunday evenings!!! I grew up in the Midlands so had no idea about half of the terms but loved it!

I really wonder why we enjoyed this show so much. It was a weird combination of boatbuilding, fashion and international business dealings (which I never understood). All the talk of brokers and consortiums went over my head in the 80s and still does!

Yes, I got drawn in the first time round by the promise of exciting, outdoor sailing dramas and feel-good triumphs - the opening scenes, in fact.

Instead we got week after week of dingy warehouses stuffed with people being horrid to each other. Warehouses with clothes (I wouldn't be drawn into a "boutique" like that), warehouses with the underside of boats, underground warehouses with tables and waiters that looked like a student dive.

And the jeopardy! The never-ending jeopardy! No one could be happy, nothing could go well, always someone deliberately spoiling it. Shame they'd killed off so many characters by the time the actor playing Tom died and they had to script it for real.

I'm enjoying taking the piss this time round, but I remember now I'd gone off it in the 80s.

@january123 apologies apparently he died during series 5. Must have been a shock for the rest of the cast. Can't remember how they explained why he was missing

Thanks @kenyaswhiterefrigerator Explains why the start of series five feels a bit all over the place. And the ditching of the plans to open another boatyard

I'll tell you the reason we were sucked into this show first time around in two words - Charles Frere Grin

mum2jakie · 18/03/2023 20:11

He is very easy on the eye, regardless of the daft consortium/merger/holding company storylines! I always thought he married Lynn in the series but maybe it was just that they married in real life?

He is very sexy (and loaded).

I loved Howard's Way when it was about boats and boat building, once it morphed into a UK version of Dallas I gave up on it.

RaraRachael · 18/03/2023 23:07

Does Lynne ever come back into it?

Yes Charles Frere was extremely attractive . I thought so then and still do.

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 19/03/2023 06:13

@RaraRachael Lynne came back for the last series (6) I think she ends up marrying Charles Frere.

Posters were pointing out that Howard's Way was intentionally set out like a UK version of Dallas - very aspirational and glam!

Ooh Gerald! Shock

RaraRachael · 20/03/2023 20:00

I really like Gerald. He plays the part very well and deserves a medal for putting up with the dreadful Polly.

january123 · 21/03/2023 11:50

Hmm wondering which pub Ken & James are at S5 E9.
Saddo that I am, really enjoying spotting the haunts of my youth but don't recognise this pub.

Looks like somewhere on the Hamble but def not the Jolly Sailor.

RaraRachael · 21/03/2023 18:14

Today's episode excelled itself. First we had the car chase with all the usual hindrances while naff 80s music is adding to the tension.
Then Chris de Burgh playing as Abby and Leo returned from their hot date.
Finally the fight over Abby - seriously? We're meant to believe 2 men are fighting over the dullest girl on the planet.
I see we've got Laura now to add a bit of elderly glamour.

Howard's Way - the gift that keeps on giving!

saveforthat · 21/03/2023 21:00

Avril and Laura are supposed to be childhood friends but Kate O'Mara is about 15 years older than the other actress.

RaraRachael · 23/03/2023 16:44

That was some look Laura was rocking in today's episode. The hair, make-up and clothes would have been bad enough on their own, but the whole combo was breathtakingly awful. Did people really aspire to look like that in the 80s? 😃

TennisWithDeborah · 25/03/2023 16:36

I find Gerald quite attractive. Lovely eyes.

TennisWithDeborah · 25/03/2023 16:36

I find Gerald quite attractive. Lovely eyes.

He's very charming in a middle aged, sensible man way.

James, however, is very unconvincing and the new romantic trousers and white polo neck are an aberration. I'm all for female empowerment but Jan is more prolific on the bedroom front than Ken, which is really saying something...

Orin (?) and Abby are certainly a perfect match in terms of acting ability.

RaraRachael · 29/03/2023 10:55

Did the producers seriously think we'd be interested in all this courtroom stuff? It's tedious beyond belief. I'd rather be watching Ken prancing around in his skintight white trousers or Tom in his action slacks.

january123 · 29/03/2023 13:14

S5 is dull as dull.

Uncanny likeness between Laura Wilde and Amanda (Leo's 5 minute wife)!

diddl · 29/03/2023 13:42

Didn't Maurice Colbourne who played Tom Howard die during the filming of S5?

Appears so, about half way through the series I suddenly realised he wasn't there

RaraRachael · 29/03/2023 19:34

(Leo's 5 minute wife)! 😅Great description.

I had a quick look ahead and it appears that Series 6 doesn't start immediately so let's hope they finish it off. We need to complete our fix of consortiums and dodgy business dealings.

mum2jakie · 30/03/2023 21:57

Yeah series five isn't particularly gripping me so far...and they haven't had to rewrite Tom Howards' absence in the bit I'm up to yet. He was young to die so suddenly in real life though.
