Anyone else excited about the return of Endeavour tomorrow night??

Really looking forward to it!

Didnt know Colin Dexter had that clause in his will, but I'm glad he did. John Thaw , for me, could not be bettered. And that lovely, melancholic feel to the episodes.

diddl · 30/09/2021 13:41

I also think Morse is great.

What would be the point in remaking?

To "update"?

They are set in the time that they are!

That is Morse-at that age in those years!

QueenBee52 · 30/09/2021 13:47

Yes I remember there being strict criteria even for Endeavour being made... the Actor had to be a certain age before he was allowed to start filming...

Its a fantastic series and I actually welled up when Thursday asked Endeavour about his future.. he looked in the cars rear view mirror and you saw John Thaws reflection.. beautifully done..

Its also lovely that John Thaws own actress daughter plays the Journalist Endeavour is friends with.. and her first meeting with Endeavour she asked if they had met before.. as he was very familiar to her...☺️

beautifully written 🌸

I've never seen that bit. Was that in the last series?

It was the Pilot episode.

Yes, when Endeavour met the the journalist for the first time, she said some thing like "Haven't we met before?" And when he replied "I don't think so", she said "Perhaps in another life then...." So moving.

Akire · 30/09/2021 15:00

That was like a Halloween special! Hope he’s in next one not away on retreat. I never really liked Morse, liked Lewis and loved endeavour.

Laughingravy · 30/09/2021 15:45

Out with a whimper really, especially compared with the recent series that involved police corruption. I could imagine if it was Thursday who ended up at the hotel he'd have pulled his hat on tight, turned up his collar and declared 'Someone's havin' a laugh, but not at my expense' before heading off into the night. A pretty poor show if it is the final one.

yes it was a very moving tribute 💕

Isn't it funny how emotionally attached we are to Morse even though he is a complete arse in the Morse series! We love a flaw, don't we? Does it stand up in today's standards I wonder.... I don't think I want to re-watch and find out!

Yes 🤣

I have watched a few episodes of Morse and find them very dated (even the style of filming seems a bit off). However, I do really enjoy seeing so many leading lights of the UK acting world, many of them when they were early in their careers.

rslsys · 01/10/2021 09:52

Do you reckon there is room for another series, with another actor playing the Morse character, bridging the 15 years or so between the Endeavour stories and the start of Colin Dexter's Morse stories?
Fred Thursday is never mentioned in the Morse era but McNutt is. Would give the opportunity to supplant Fred with McNutt, marry Joan to Strange and not stretch the 30 odd, self imposed episode limits that have been the norm so far.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/10/2021 10:03

I am wondering whether if Joan marries Strange that causes some major rift with Thursday (for Endeavour)? It does however seem slightly strange that Morse in later years would never mention someone who so clearly 'had his back' and helped in so many ways (including facing up to his poor relationship with alcohol).

diddl · 01/10/2021 10:59

Haven't they done 1965-1971 with Endeavour?

The first book was 1975 I think.

So 92-75??Grin

rslsys · 01/10/2021 12:36

If there is only 3 years between Endeavour ending and Morse starting, the character will have to have a rapid decline!
I had Endeavour pegged as early thirties and Morse in his fifties!

diddl · 01/10/2021 13:00

Iirc, Shaun Evans is 41 now, John Thaw was 45 when he started as Morse.

Clawdy · 01/10/2021 16:08

Shaun looks young, John always looked older than his age.

RaraRachael · 02/10/2021 16:14

I loved Morse and Lewis and have tried really hard to like Endeavour, but I can't - there, I've said it!

I find it really dreary. I can't warm to Shaun Evans at all (or in Vigil). To me, his character bears no resemblance to the later Morse and I can't find anything likeable about him.

The whole show is dreary with stories I'm not really interested in and either me or OH falls asleep during it.

you need to go to the naughty step .. 🤣😂

rslsys · 03/10/2021 18:50

But if you think about Morse's character, he is the most boring, grumpy bugger on the planet. Could you imagine spending an evening in the pub with him? He would be maudlin, half pissed and more interested in the crossword than conducting an interesting conversation that kept you involved. If you are looking for an example of a narcissist, Morse is your man!
That said, the re-runs are compelling with shedloads of nods to the Morse plots from both Lewis and Endeavour.

GuyFawkesDay · 05/10/2021 22:03

There's going to be more Endeavour.

Bsmirched · 05/10/2021 22:31

@GuyFawkesDay how do you know?

RaraRachael · 06/10/2021 22:48

Just caught up with Sunday's episode. The word turgid springs to mind. Could barely work out what was going on with all that creeping about in the dark

If there is another series I don't think I'll bother.

TwinMummaSue82 · 20/10/2021 11:08

Not sure if you ever got a response to this question but it defo was the Coppid Beech Hotel! We stayed there last night and they are filming Killing Eve there today too!
