Anyone else excited about the return of Endeavour tomorrow night??

Really looking forward to it!

Did anyone notice at the beginning, a girl was taking driving lessons (nearly knocked a guy off his bike) in an L-registered car? That wouldn't have been registered until September 1972 whereas the episode was set in May 1971!

@JaneJeffer

Is it repeated anywhere on ITV or just on the hub?
There was a season of repeats of Morse a couple of months ago, on ITV2 I think. they started in the early hours after 12am and although I watched them i often lostconcentration by the end so did not fully understand the resolution.
JaneJeffer · 20/09/2021 01:13

Thanks @tomorrowalready

There was a few mistakes regarding the church as well. Back then they wouldn't have put communion into your hands as it wasn't supposed to be touched so everyone had to stick their tongue out for it! Probably couldn't do that with Covid regulations anyway. One of the women blessed herself before getting communion instead of after. Fred called the priest's house a rectory instead of a presbytery. Also confession is usually at a set time and not by appointment.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 20/09/2021 09:26

Also the church was meant to be a Catholic church, but was very clearly an Anglican one.

I also recognised the hotel last week - I hadn't realised it had been around that long. I briefly had a job on the other side of the Coppid Beech roundabout.

Just caught up on Sunday's episode.
I liked it but convoluted a murderer spelling out his dd name in semaphore seems unlikely. But I still liked it.
Looks like Jim and Joan will become a couple.
Thought the scenes with his step mum were excellent.

Gilmorehill · 20/09/2021 22:42

@Clawdy

I got a shock when they mentioned a Carpenters concert! The fashions and hair look nothing like early seventies - much more like mid-sixties. Joan's dress and hair for the ball looked even earlier than that.
I did think that too about Joan’s outfit but maybe she was playing safe as she knew it would be a very conservative affair.
JaneJeffer · 20/09/2021 23:02

Yes the semaphore thing was far fetched and he seemed to jump out of the car after he shot him so when did he change the watch? I did enjoy Endeavour doing the arms though Grin

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 21/09/2021 07:52

The semaphore thing was utterly ridiculous. Like something you'd find in Midsomer Murders.

I'm just watching now. Why do you think it was supposed to be a RC church? Some High Church C of E priests are called Father. Yes it was clearly an Anglican Church.
CaptainMyCaptain · 21/09/2021 14:39

Just answered my own question. Strange said he was an RC so couldn't be a Mason.

leavesthataregreen · 21/09/2021 17:24

@CaptainMyCaptain - do High Anglican churches offer confession? I thought that was exclusively a Catholic thing.

You can confess but not usually in a box, I think, more face to face. I'm not an expert, though, and haven't been to that kind of church for more than 30 years.

Who plays Morses's step mother? I'm just watching Sunday's episode now

Lynda Rooke

There's no photo on IMDB but she was in Coronation Street and the usual Silent Witness/Doctors/Casualty/The Bill/Hollyoaks round. She looked very familiar though for someone that's been in a lot of things for one episode.

Thank you!

NapoleonOzmolysis · 22/09/2021 11:33

It still doesn't answer my question about where I know her from!

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/09/2021 11:55

I was a bit surprised his stepmother addressed him as 'Morse' even if they didn't like each other much.

RiotAtTheRodeo · 22/09/2021 11:57

I thought she played that scene quite well. We got the impression when she rolled up that she was a cold and pushy woman, which she was to an extent. But I saw her human side when she said to Morse 'I didn't kill her' in reference to his mother. I could see she had probably tried to connect with him as a child but he in his Morseness had simply shut down and never given her a chance.

JaneJeffer · 22/09/2021 12:04

he in his Morseness Grin

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/09/2021 12:23

Yes, I thought that was very good. I was just surprised she addressed the note to Morse rather than using his first name.

RiotAtTheRodeo · 22/09/2021 12:30

Yeah it did stand out as presumably her surname is Morse too!

diddl · 22/09/2021 12:47

I think it really odd that she would have stayed with him as they disliked each other so much & he had to sleep on the sofa!

I guess a plot device to give the backstory & show how long he could bear a grudge.

Isn't it a flat that he's in & not the whole house?

I think there was an ep of Morse where Lewis said something about it being such a big place, so I did wonder.

Also in Morse, did he go to visit her in a care home at one point?

There was an ep with Sorcha Cusack as Joyce I think, who he'd always liked/got on with.

Tlollj · 22/09/2021 13:58

Was it seraphim and cherubim about the ‘rave scene’ didn’t his niece get involved in drugs. Joyce’s daughter that would be?
I seem to remember them all standing out in the cold somewhere. With Morse’s stepmom in a wheelchair.

FlatteredFool · 22/09/2021 14:22

Is there really only one episode left?

RiotAtTheRodeo · 22/09/2021 14:28

Yes that's the one. She too her own life after getting too into the rave scene. I don't think it was one of the stronger Morse episodes, they were better off sticking to crumbly old academics getting bumped off rather than weighing in on youth culture. It reminded me on an episode of Quincy where he pleads with all the kids to stop listening to punk rock as it's destroying their minds Grin
