Anyone else excited about the return of Endeavour tomorrow night??

Really looking forward to it!

Who was the canal killer? I don't think he was ever caught. They got someone but there was still someone lurking in the bushes at the end of that episode.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/09/2021 09:54

I agree that there never really would be a good place to end it in a way satisfactory to everyone! And I guess they possibly felt able to play fast and loose with the script (and have a bit of fun making the plot very Agatha Christie) knowing it was the last episode.

@CaptainMyCaptain

The Guardian article quoted above suggested one more episode but the name Terminus and him acceptung his alcohol issues and getting help was quite final. Also his comment 'It's starting to thaw'.
I think you're right, especially the "thaw" reference.
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/09/2021 11:40

And we'd got enough of Endeavour's romantic backstory to understand why he is as he is as older Morse (including the drinking and still choosing the wrong women), and possibly the reason for his rather off-hand relationship with Strange as his boss.

Clawdy · 28/09/2021 11:53

Thought we might have seen a shot of him listening to opera in his flat though!

woodhill · 28/09/2021 14:14

It's only 1971 though. I want moreSmile

diddl · 28/09/2021 14:46

It has all been very good hasn't it?

Mind you I loved Lewis as well.

Great character well played imo.

Talking of which-Anton Lesser as Reginald Bright.

Just fabulous.

The scene with Thursday.

And how he was "defending" Morse-that the 33 was on his bus route home & sensible to leave the car.

I suppose he had some empathy with Morse having seen Violetta shot & being powerless to save her.

If Joan & Strange end up together-hope he's not such a pompous grouch with he as he is at work!

JaneJeffer · 28/09/2021 15:04

I think there will be more. I read that the producer tried to leave an ending that works if no more are made but it depends on viewing figures. Hopefully it did well.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/09/2021 15:16

Talking of which-Anton Lesser as Reginald Bright. Just fabulous. He was just perfect as Bright, wasn't he? A cultured man with a colonial past, quite different to the likes of Strange and Thursday, but very different again from Endeavour.

And the story arc from his wife being terminally ill, to his utter devastation at her demise, and gradually getting through his grief... Just sublime acting.

diddl · 28/09/2021 16:38

I need to find a way of dropping "Just so, carry on" into conversations!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/09/2021 16:48

Indeed @diddl!

Bright wasn't at all keen on Endeavour to start with, was he? Amazing how is tune changed as the seasons progressed.

Endeavour/Morse is kind of an example of a man who walks alone and doesn't really fit in in any milieu. It's really rather sad.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 28/09/2021 16:48

his tune even

RiotAtTheRodeo · 28/09/2021 16:55

Love Anton Lesser. He's always great.

diddl · 28/09/2021 16:56

Another scene I like with Bright was when Thursday & his brother met him in a restaurant & he was so out of his depth with the brother.

And when the WPC was being harrassed.

So well written.

FlatteredFool · 28/09/2021 18:42

Anton was sublime. I have such affection for him. I don't think I've ever loved characters so much. Such great casting.

woodhill · 28/09/2021 19:38

Yes he is superb in it

Elderflower14 · 28/09/2021 21:07

Well I've just watched Sunday nights episode. Suffice to say I won't sleep well and will probably have nightmares about jesters!!! Confused

leavesthataregreen · 28/09/2021 22:08

DH made a good comment about Endeavour today. He said the stories week by week are dire but the long arc of how the characters develop is really interesting. (And of course the acting is brilliant and Sean Evans is gorgeous! Grin)

MissMarpleRocks · 28/09/2021 22:35

I keep wondering when Morse is going to meet McNutt. His mentor. Whereas if we go on the Endeavour series Thursday would seem to be the mentor. So I reckon something will happen between them that will ruin the relationship. And also drive a permanent wedge between Morse & Joan. I can definitely see her & Strange getting together after the last couple of episodes. Morse is too unpredictable. Strange is dependable. IMO.

diddl · 29/09/2021 07:50

How often is McNutt mentioned in the books/series & does Morse refer to him as his mentor?

It does seem odd that he wasn't used instead of Thursday if so.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 29/09/2021 08:54

I loved the way Endeavour (as then unknown traveller on the bus) was referred to as a drunk, thirtysomething 'clerk' type!

EmotionalSupportBear · 29/09/2021 11:32

i loved it, i don't get why people are so bothered about it not being amaaaazingly written.

The road was passable, the driver crashed it on purpose

The hotel being untouched was a wee fit far-fetched, but the premise i guess was that people avoided it after that many people being murdered by a nutcase.

There was plenty of detective work if you followed the clues.

I'd honestly love them to remake the Morse episodes, the old ones with John Thaw are so old, and it seems a shame to halt it there, he's a much loved character and i think a reboot is due, there won't be many younger than me at 40 who really remember them.

I found the ending really unsatisfactory if that’s to be the end. What happened to Sam? Why include that if it’s not important that we find out? I really didn’t like the way Wynn attacked Joan. Completely unnecessary.

Colin Dexter had a clause in his will to say no one else can play older Morse
