Changing Rooms tonight. Anyone watching?

I’m so excited to see the return of Changing Rooms tonight on Channel 4. I used to love watching the show in the ‘90s with my mum when I lived at home. I remember doing some very dodgy stencilling in my mum’s front room after being inspired by a makeover!

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen will in it so there should be some extreme makeovers. Will anyone else be watching?

and I was also strangely distracted by his leather trousers, which he appeared to ‘fill’ quite well
I thought it was just me! I think I’ve developed a middle aged mum crush on LLB with his salt and pepper hair and his leather trousers Blush

BlankTimes · 19/08/2021 02:25

I quite liked LLB's Dali-esque tache, but the other couple of designers' 'banter' put me off entirely. the radiator cover in their makeover room was only shown briefly, but it looked the same as the 'up and over garage door' wall, if so it would have been solid.

Most of the programme was inane chatter and posing as opposed to innovation, which was a shame.

@ShitShop

I thought Lawrence was hilarious with his “up and over garage door” reference Grin and I was also strangely distracted by his leather trousers, which he appeared to ‘fill’ quite well BlushGrin

Is it wrong that I now want parquet flooring going up my wall?

Re the fireplace/floor/wall combo - he used the TV as a fireplace by putting a ‘living fire’ video on!

Oh I see! I hadn't realised the fake fire WAS the actual TV 🤦🏻‍♀️ Also I thought LLB said it was going to be herringbone parquet style flooring and fireplace? That's not what it looked like to me 🤔
WeAreTheHeroes · 19/08/2021 04:19

Considering it was on at 8pm there was a lot of innuendo and smutty comments.

I can only think the others involved in the original feel they have moved on and didn't see the point of doing it all again.

SequinsandStiIettos · 19/08/2021 05:31

Ooh I shall watch this now. Thanks OP Flowers

Giggorata · 19/08/2021 07:53

I'm glad it’s back but I didn’t much like either of the rooms this week, the colours didn’t really work, although there were a couple of things that were OK in each design.
Hated the swing chair in the sitting room but might have quite liked it hanging in a conservatory. Cutting the room in half like that was the wrong choice IMO. The hair wall was just unpleasant and the chains were pathetic.

Although I missed Handy Andy, I think the other handy people will begin to relax and show their character as the series progresses.
Are they going to swap different designers around, or will it be the two gigglers and LLB every week? Hope not.

All in all, since the advent of George Clarke's programmes, the designer competition programmes and even DIY SOS, Changing Rooms seems arch and dated, and a bit off.

I rather liked Colin and Justin too. I'd like to see them back.

billysboy · 19/08/2021 08:02

what a car crash !

TheGenealogist · 19/08/2021 08:13

@WeAreTheHeroes

Different programme, but whatever happened to Justin and Colin the Scottish couple who were designers/developers,?
They moved to Canada and do a lot of telly over there.

I remember Changing Rooms first time round, it was must-see telly and the thing everyone was talking about at work the next morning.

I do love Laurence and it's very clear his tongue couldn't be further in his cheek if he tried with the leather trousers and hair flicky stuff. He is very talented at painting and in the original show often painted murals or some amazing detail on people's walls.

But there were so many issues with the C4 reboot... they stretched it from 30 minutes to an hour, the presenter was shouty, the male design team was shouty, the two women were shrieky, the basics of the show went out the window (budget? never mentioned) and it was just very meh.

I felt about it the same way I feel about Come Dine With Me. Great idea. Started off well. Then became more about ramping up the conflict and drama, and the extreme personalities of the contestants than the cooking.

And the wall of hair was bloody awful, as was the swing.

Candleabra · 19/08/2021 08:28

I dislike exaggerated exclamations such as "I was literally speechless...."

I can honestly say the blue and pink drag room did just that.
The whole programme was beyond awful, and it had a horrible undertone that the designers were (not very subtly) taking the piss out of the homeowners.

Bryonyshcmyony · 19/08/2021 08:28

I agree the innuendo was horrible and misplaced. We know Anna Richardson does naked attraction, we don't have to be reminded every 5 minutes

Yes I agree it had a nasty edge to it. Really off message in this day and age when most people want kinder tv
PrincessScarlett · 19/08/2021 08:41

Agree there was too much smut, innuendo and drivel and not enough actual decoration/designing.

SoupDragon · 19/08/2021 08:45

I meant to watch this but couldn't summon up any enthusiasm for it in the end. It doesn't sound like I missed much.

I love him so much. He is great on DIY SOS.

Bryonyshcmyony · 19/08/2021 08:46

I can't believe I spent minutes watching Anna Richardson work out everyone's drag name.

SpindleWhorl · 19/08/2021 08:47

I knew the minute they started shrieking about 'drag' it was going to be a cascade of off-colour crap and turned it over.

The Guardian reviewer didn't even bother addressing the unpleasant, innuendo-laden undertones, yet still managed to hate it.

Mooserp · 19/08/2021 10:15

I read that Davina McCall was the original choice for host. I bet she's glad she didn't do it.

I was hoping for a nice, relaxing programme and more sophisticated styling from the original series (considering that it was really the first DIY/makeover show on telly and what has been on since then).

LadyEloise1 · 19/08/2021 17:42

I haven't watched it yet but the comments on here are making me feel inclined to not bother to watch it.

Tealwarrior · 19/08/2021 18:01

Dear god it was ridiculous.

Meredusoleil · 19/08/2021 18:16

I did quite like the new carpenter chap called something like Tibby. He seemed to be a laugh.

Did anyone notice how when Anna asked the women if their designers had nailed the brief and understood their wishes properly, they both hesitated rather a long time before answering yes?

HollyGrail · 19/08/2021 19:58

Can't believe it was an hour - I watched it on sky and fast forwarded the ads - seemed quite short.
I don't know why it's LLB competing with 2 guys - one guy yes but two - why - surely in the whole of the uK they could have found a person suitable. Maybe 2 gay guys gives them more inclusive ticks.
I feel it's a bit downmarket. Shantay whatever - it's what drag queens say when they meet - surely they mean Enchante'.

LLB was good but the rest were average.

2Rebecca · 19/08/2021 20:04

Awful. Why can't a woman do the decor? Why are both designer teams male? Do they think sex doesn't matter if you are a gay man? I doubt many women would have such awful taste.
LLB incorporated his own paintings. No narcissism and self promotion at all there

2Rebecca · 19/08/2021 20:12

LLB at least produced something I could live with. The room the 2 gay blokes produced was awful. Who decided they had any talent? The hair wall isn't interesting if you are female

Crockof · 19/08/2021 20:36

Yet again I bloody love you lot. The pjamers, the massive leather trousers with a pocket for a phone!!! Serial killer art and a 'bar' which was a fucking table... bet it wasn't only me that was wishing the swing to fall out of the ceiling.

Can't wait for next week, will only watch the last 15mins again as no need to watch it all.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 19/08/2021 20:55

I watched it because I loved it first time round. The shelves with the teapots 🫖 🫖

Anyhoo. Love LLB (and he WAS bloody mint on that painting programme)

I wasn’t a fan of either of the rooms. I would love that swing for the garden though.

That bedroom was hideous. The wall of muff fluff? Courtesy of Merkins R US? No.

The bedsheets were probably made of skin. The chains looked as though they were made of cracked ribs.

And the barbapapa cock on the ceiling?

Nope. Not for me.

I’d love to know if the folk keep it or bin it.

I want a big LLB on the back of my door at work though. He is like a louche Dave Grohl.

The filth of it. Lovely stuff. Grin

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 19/08/2021 20:56

Nope crockof

You weren’t the only one. Grin

We are clearly a pair of barstewards Grin
