I saw the first series (which was good and guessed who killed his wife) but no need to watch it before this one as different stories

A teacher Sally was accused of having an affair and killing a student schoolboy 16yr Matty Taylor

Sally always said she was innocent but went to prison for 5yrs

Now she is out and trying to restart her life , but her husband Sam filed for divorce and has a new partner and getting married

Can only assume new evidence comes to light hence her freedom, but the real killer still needs to be found ........

I really liked the first series so hope this will be good

I was trying to work out if Bethany and Karen had each thought the other did it the whole time or if it was just a recent thing.

PrincessScarlett · 21/05/2021 12:22

Yes Bethany definitely thought her mum had done it and was trying to protect her.

Actually, now that we know Sam was closet gay it makes perfect sense he got together with Karen and explains why they were the least likely looking couple with zero sexual chemistry. Karen was a safe bet who didn't want kids from him because of her age and the fact she had Bethany. Even the sex on the staircase was completely instigated by Karen and Sam couldn't look less interested if he tried.

Quite enjoyed it. Certainly much more watchable than Viewpoint.

trancepants · 21/05/2021 12:32

I thought Sally was too good to be true a person throughout. If you had lost everything; baby, marriage, job, reputation and freedom based on false accusations you'd be burning up with anger and grief. Not just consistently empathetic to how other people would be feeling all the time.

I thought Beth as a character didn't work at all as the actor looked and had the mannerisms of someone in her 30s while acting like a spoiled 6 year old.

Sam as a closeted gay man didn't really ring true. Especially when his argument for his dad never accepting him as gay was because he had sex with strangers in parks and lay-bys. Well gee, dumbass, if you were living as an out gay man maybe you wouldn't be doing that and instead have been in a respectable relationship where you can have sex in your tastefully decorated bed! (Or on the stairs just feet from where your teenager is doing her homework, whatever.)

PrincessScarlett · 21/05/2021 13:04

@trancepants and if she wasn't burning up with rage and grief already, finding out your husband/ex husband was a lying cowardly selfish murderer would definitely tip you over the edge!

Deathraystare · 21/05/2021 14:24

@PrincessScarlett

Yeah, not exactly a Prince among men was he?

RJnomore1 · 21/05/2021 14:39

I couldn’t get Beth just apparently heading back off to school at the end as if nothing had happened! She would be in deep shit for the break in, spitting on sally etc.

Also the actress is 23, which increases the oddness...

stumbledin · 21/05/2021 14:52

I must admit at some points I thought it was going to turn out to be Sally after all as she had quite a temper and a complete blind spot to anything other than what she wanted. How could she ever have thought she could just go back and return to her old life? But was sad about her mum.

As to Beth I spent most of the time being really upset that she wasn't Naz(*)at Oxford having a great time but was living with some bonkers mother in a dark brooding hilly area! How her mother was ever a social worker. But yes suspect that each thought the other guilty.

TV crime drama light.

(*) One for Ackley Bridge (as it was originally) fans.

Nice of Beth to protect her mum tho

The actress who played Sally was very good in this role. To me Sally had the stuffing knocked out of her after 5 years in prison and there wasn't that anger and energy that you would expect at the end there. Sam betrayed her in the worst way possible - but something in the script and confession didn't ring true. Why did he finish it with the boy if he was so in love with him, - he wasn't particularly loyal to Sally anyway, he went off with Karen and didn't support Sally whilst she was in prison. So what did it matter what the boy said, why did he have to kill him.

PrincessScarlett · 21/05/2021 17:42

Because he didn't want anyone knowing he was gay, to Sam it would be the worst thing everyone finding out. He obviously had deep issues about homosexuality being wrong. So he'd rather kill a boy and let his wife take the blame than have people talking about him.

PrincessScarlett · 21/05/2021 17:46

Sally did say earlier on that she'd had 5 years in prison to think so I suppose she had reached some sort of acceptance of the situation. I still think I would have punched the ex husband for being so bloody spineless!

Chosennone · 21/05/2021 17:52

I enjoyed all of it. Except the ending. In a way a good twist, but too unbelievable!

We also couldn't help but Hmm when he started reeling off his secret gay life. He didnt exactly break it to Sally gently that he was gay and next news he works his way through a veritable list of seedy shagging spots; I like having sex with men/boys in laybys, parks, toilets!

excelledyourself · 21/05/2021 18:14

I half expected Sally to crack and kill him, which would have been ironic.

PrincessScarlett · 21/05/2021 18:28

I did to @excelledyourself

DipSwimSwoosh · 21/05/2021 18:47

I don't understand why Karen and Bethany lied for 5 years. Why didn't they just tell the truth as they didn't do it?
Same applies to most suspects in most tv dramas. Why do they lie?

DipSwimSwoosh · 21/05/2021 18:47

And also his parents. Why did they lie?

purpleme12 · 22/05/2021 22:17

2 people from Casualty in this!

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/05/2021 22:30

I watched it all earlier.
Complete tosh.
A whole load of red herrings just to have that ending.
I don't understand why he stuck around either, surely he'd have left, also was there any need for the lay by/toilet announcement?
Also agree about PC Pizza, how unprofessional.

purpleme12 · 24/05/2021 22:32

I liked it

LyndaSnellMBE · 25/05/2021 03:37

I liked it too

Cowbells · 25/05/2021 14:35

@LeilaLiesLow

As a former teacher I'm pretty aghast at the way the profession is portrayed although I'm glued to the programme.

There is no way that I would do supply in a school where I had that history. Even after 5 years away there would still be students there who knew me from before.

That seems bonkers and has made me think she's not all she seems. I also don't like the creepy way she gave the Blackpool keyring to Sam. Uh oh- another Blackpool connection. She seems to be trying to get her claws back into him in a very obvious way.

I don't get the way the head is being spoken to by Karen. She's out of order - just being chair of governors doesn't mean you can hold the head accountable in that way.

I also wondered where Karen's daughter was when her mum was bonking on the stairs!

The red herrings are swimming all over and it's a bit obvious.

Anyway- I will watch!

DH is an ex-school governor and was yapping: They're not quorate! when the emergency meeting was called Grin
Cowbells · 25/05/2021 22:10

Just finished watching it. That was a shocking load of drivel. Completely random story tacked in at the end and so implausible. Gay but couldn't, as a grown man, tell his dad because his dad thought he was a rugby playing type who got the pints in. Because as we all know The Gays can't play rugby or buy a round in the pub. Hmm

Never did find out why Beth, her mum and Anna were all barking mad compulsive liars or why the Head was so incompetent at running a school and the policeman so incompetent at running his investigation. or why the writers got paid for such a dire script.

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/05/2021 04:28

Yes!
Why didn't he just move away and then live as he was?
No one would have questioned the moving away, and then he could have stopped shagging in toilets and lay bys which was a detail we needed to know.

Cowbells · 26/05/2021 09:33

@IHaveBrilloHair

Well you know that is where The Gays have sex. They don't do it in normal relationships and bedrooms because They Are Not Like Us.

Bloody Hell it was awful!

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/05/2021 10:00

Ah yes, the awful gays. Ffs.
