Loki (Disney+ starting June 11): MCU fans assemble!

Loki starts on Disney+ on June 11!

I know it’s a way away but I thought I’d start a thread for pre-amble pondering discussion seeing as Falcon and the Winter Soldier is over now and we no longer have a weekly MCU fix for a while!

Sometimes I’m wary of trailers, I don’t like to know too many details in advance, but this is good, it doesn’t spoil anything just nicely teases the theme and tone, and looks to be some good chemistry between Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson.

I really like how WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and now Loki are all so different in feel.

Oh and if you’re not a MCU addict want to catch up with the story so far, then this article lists which movies to watch beforehand (nine of them!!!) but really, you could just watch two - the first Thor and Avengers movies, and then jump to Loki from there and you’d be in the same place as our protagonist. It’d be really interesting to hear that perspective actually!

Have you watched It? Anyone?

I LOVE the aesthetic. And TH. Love it.

Balaur · 09/06/2021 19:56

I watched earlier today. It was excellent. Hiddles is just fantastic as Loki. The aesthetic was amazing, I agree. Was surprised when Owen Wilson popped up but I'd not read up about who was in it, and I really enjoyed his character too. Will keep watching!

GrolliffetheDragon · 09/06/2021 20:58

Loved it. So much I want to say, but spoilers!

DanielODonkey · 09/06/2021 21:20

Oh I love Owen Wilson. Perfect in this.

And I don't really find Tom hiddlystiddle attractive normally, he's a poor copy of J J Feild in my eyes. But his Loki voice is quite commanding...

Super super start to the series. Very interested to see how it develops.

iklboo · 09/06/2021 21:26

@LemonViolet - MN has said they'll add a No Spoiler to the thread title but you will have to ask as it's your fred.

MyFloorIsLava · 09/06/2021 21:37

That was freaking AWESOME. I enjoyed that so much. Roll on next Wednesday.

MyFloorIsLava · 09/06/2021 21:38

And I've never liked Loki so wasn't feeling hyped for this at all, but Tom Hiddlestone is very very good.

ToastieSnowy · 09/06/2021 22:09

Episode 1 was outstanding. Someone give Loki a massive hug! There was so much to it, what a rollercoaster.

webuiltthiscityonrockandwheat · 09/06/2021 22:22

I loved that, even if the timelines fried my brain a bit!

Patapouf · 09/06/2021 22:30

I just get so wound up by the short length of it and waiting a whole week for another episode is barbaric!!

APurpleSquirrel · 09/06/2021 22:56

Loved it! Really well done, nice introduction to the TVA & was good to see it tied in nicely with the wider MCU.
Love Loki & TH - he is brilliant in that role.
Can't wait for next week!

iklboo · 09/06/2021 23:10

OMG that was so good!!!

GrolliffetheDragon · 09/06/2021 23:42

I think there will be a rather long queue of people wanting to hug Loki after that.
Soubriquet · 10/06/2021 07:00

Watched it this morning

Really enjoyed it. More than I enjoyed WandaVision which is a shame because I love Elizabeth Olsen and Kat Dennings.

Looking forward to the next episode.

beardeddragon174 · 10/06/2021 07:02

Love, loved it. Cast were brilliant.

@DanielODonkey I adored JJ in Austenland.

LemonViolet · 10/06/2021 07:48

Do we really need a spoiler warning? If you have a spoiler warning then you have to police it, and I don’t want to do that. Half the fun of MCU is the theorising and overanalysing every hint....who knows what really counts as a spoiler? What about stuff the cast and production staff say etc? The previous MCU threads have rubbed along nicely, generally we wait until late evening on the day it’s released to start discussing and it’s on you if you read ahead before you’ve seen the episodes (trailers, promos etc) that have been released.

Anyway. Best bits for me

“I was just standing up to make a point”
“I’m sorry, go ahead”
“It won’t be as meaningful now!”

“Give me the Tesseract, or I’ll gut you like a fish, Casey!”
“What’s a fish?”
“How do you not know what a fish is?”

Hehehehehe

Sooooo much to unpack here! So there WAS a multiverse (ding ding ding!) but some super-beings un-multi’d it? Whaaaaaaaat? Hmmm, I wonder if we know another super-being who may be motivated to re-multi it

Loki finding the heap of infinity stones in the clerk’s junk drawer....and realising how tiny his story has been so far....I felt like that on behalf of all the Avengers!!! They busted their guts (and Natasha died) to get 5 of them and Casey has multiples just laying about and being used as paperweights. I wonder if that pic upthread of Loki talking to someone with red hair from the trailer is Natasha then.

I feel a bit sceptical that Loki’s whole “redemption” arc that we’ve followed over years, has essentially been done in 10 mins and boom we have new reformed Loki. Also the “I hurt people because I have to”.... didn’t appreciate that.

And
“The variant we’re hunting..... is you”
“I beg your pardon?”
Yeah I think we’re all there with you on that one Loki!!!

I’m going to watch New Rockstars reaction and breakdown videos today on YT, that over an hour of luxuriating in Loki minutiae. Glorious.

Btw did anyone else get loads of buffering when watching last night?

Well it's not the same as living through it. Obviously a shock to see it all though.

Anyone else see the similarities in a way with the early stages of Thor's 'journey' (for want of a better word) in Ragnarok? Loss of Mjolnir/powers don't work in TVA, disorientation etc with arrival on Sakaar/TVA right down to person being killed in front of them. Hopefully this means we'll see a more powerful Loki as he's always been very weak magically in the MCU.

ToastieSnowy · 10/06/2021 12:43

I hope Casey is a recurring character, he was really funny. Did Loki swipe a time stone? I wasn’t sure if Casey’s cart had been zapped so a time stone would be easily unaccounted?

I thought his speedy redemption was very well done. He hit rock bottom quickly especially as he realised he couldn’t go back or use an infinity stone to get away.

DuncinToffee · 10/06/2021 12:48

I wasn't sure about this but I really enjoyed it.

TricksyLiesmith · 10/06/2021 12:59

Absolutely loved Ep 1 . They have really focused on who he is and what his actual purpose is ?
Tom was amazing as usual and -that- scene towards the end was breathtaking.

Interested to see how the multiverse aspect pans out with feige saying the Loki series has big impacts to the MCU.

Cannot wait for next week . #lokiwednesdays

APurpleSquirrel · 10/06/2021 12:59

DH & I went back freeze-framed the open drawer in the hopes there were some Easter eggs - could make out a few things but nothing obvious. A game chip; a dagger; some marbles; a silver cross; a photo; a gun etc

It's going to be interesting to watch TH play both versions of Loki.

DuncinToffee · 10/06/2021 13:32

I hadn't heard of DB Cooper before, I like the story explanation on Den of Geek

DB Cooper

The show depicts a real event in this episode, as it reveals that Loki was in fact famed skyjacker DB Cooper. For those who might not know, a well dressed and polite man known as “Dan Cooper” hijacked a plane flying between Portland and Seattle on Nov. 24, 1971. His master plan was to escape with $20,000 in cash and parachuted out of the plane somewhere over the Pacific Northwest…and was never heard from again. Eventually, a portion of the cash that was identified as being part of Cooper’s haul was found in the woods (hence the historically accurate depiction of the cash scattering as Loki is yanked away by the Rainbow Bridge), but Cooper himself was never truly positively identified. So really, the idea that it might have just been Loki having some fun is as plausible an explanation as any.

DanielODonkey · 10/06/2021 13:45

The female guard was brilliant. Especially her utter disdain for Loki.

And Owen Wilson with the judge. She was also ace.

The cartoon was excellent, really added to the aesthetic plus it looked like it had been ripped out of a 1980s marvel cartoon.

I need to watch it twice more. Once for picking up all the detail I missed and once to see if I do want to develop am Owen Wilson crush.

Echobelly · 10/06/2021 13:47

Interesting set up - I like how they're really playing on Loki's role as a Trickster who hates any feeling of things not being in his control, which they're clearly not. Am loving the early 70s retro-futurism of TVA , like lots of you!
