Hmmmmm. Yeah.
I’ve found the finales of all 3 Disney+ shows somewhat underwhelming now.
I really thought it was going to be an ultimate Loki…… especially when in the recap they included Mobius saying “you weren’t meant to be a king, Loki” I was triumphant “THEY SAID KING LOKI!!!” so did find the whole Kang thing a bit of a let down, even though it was so so obvious all the way through. Did they actually name him though? It wasn’t really all that clear was it. I only knew who it was because of all the fan theory international chatter.
Yes, a lot of literally sitting down talking, not necessarily making much clear sense, and even Kang’s portable version of Ego’s exposition-animation device didn’t really help to make it less wordy or more show not tell. The least romantic/sexy kiss I’ve ever seen. And I do not understand “alternate timeline TVA”, I thought the TVA was in a no-time zone??? If alternate TVAs are possible, have they been pruning their own branches this entire time?
Questions
Where did Renslayer go?
What happened after B15 showed those Minutemen the original Renslayer - is that now a rebel TVA platoon?
What is ‘our’ Mobius doing back at ‘our’ TVA?
Is Sylvie now just stuck in the citadel at the end of time forever (and do we care)?
What was with those statues in the citadel…..they looked like the timekeepers but there was a fourth, smashed one? What was that about?
I was disappointed there was no real end credit scene. A cute way to announce season 2 (yay!) but would it have killed them to have a scene of Lokigator kicking back with Kid Loki in the paddling pool, struggling to open the boxed Roxxwine or something? Throg still stuck in his jar but placed on display next to Kid Loki’s throne?
Good points
Tom’s performance. He is ace. Loki really, really cares for Sylvie, it doesn’t matter if it is really romantic or not tbh, it’s his first real ‘human’ (I know they’re not humans) connection outside of his adopted family and he is clearly somewhat overwhelmed by it. “I just want you to be ok” was the most honest, touching expression of love. His horror and confusion at the end as he tries to work out why Mobius and B15 don’t recognise him, and then sees the statue of Kang….played superbly.
Mobius confronting Renslayer and failing to physically overcome her - that was brilliantly done. “You’re no threat to me”
“Well let’s see….oh, no, you’re right”.
Kang’s line “come on, we’re all villains here” was very well judged I thought, and served to remind us who we were watching - I think perhaps we had forgotten the horrific things Sylvie has done, burning TVA agents in the oil field etc, and also I think helped to pull Sylvie away from any hesitation she may have had stemming from her feelings for Loki, and pushed her back to her own solo mission she has been on from the start.
I will rewatch and immerse myself in the YouTube videos overanalysing it all….. after this and Black Widow, the next MCU instalments will be in autumn - Shang Chi in September, Eternals in November, No Way Home in December. Hawkeye at some point on Disney+ too. What If? in August I think but I struggle to get excited about animation.
