Loki (Disney+ starting June 11): MCU fans assemble!

Loki starts on Disney+ on June 11!

I know it’s a way away but I thought I’d start a thread for pre-amble pondering discussion seeing as Falcon and the Winter Soldier is over now and we no longer have a weekly MCU fix for a while!

Sometimes I’m wary of trailers, I don’t like to know too many details in advance, but this is good, it doesn’t spoil anything just nicely teases the theme and tone, and looks to be some good chemistry between Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson.

I really like how WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and now Loki are all so different in feel.

Oh and if you’re not a MCU addict want to catch up with the story so far, then this article lists which movies to watch beforehand (nine of them!!!) but really, you could just watch two - the first Thor and Avengers movies, and then jump to Loki from there and you’d be in the same place as our protagonist. It’d be really interesting to hear that perspective actually!

IT’S LOKI FINAL DAY!!!!!!

Will be watching this evening

For those partial to over-analytical theorising I enjoyed this rundown of the possibles for Big Bad!

Just watched it - will give thoughts later after the rest of you have watched.

There's a blink and you'll miss it mid-credits scene. You will definitely want to catch this.

ToastieSnowy · 14/07/2021 09:49

I’ve seen the finale this morning so spoilers in this post...

I proper heaved at Sylvie kissing Loki. I had the same reaction as my 12 year old and he’s, well, 12! I know Loki was all sibling like before that and she did it as a distraction but come on Marvel.

Have to say looks like Sylvie fucked up bigger than Starlord. Fine writing though as now anything goes. Iron Man & the others who died in Endgame are fair play in a multiverse, as is the possibility that some of the avengers could become villains.

I am looking forward to Dr Strange & No way Way home movies.

Kids aside, it was good to see confirmed that our Loki is the superior Loki. He’s changed so much. Roll on season 2.

ToastieSnowy · 14/07/2021 09:49

*Kiss

TBF it wasn't exactly the most passion filled kiss, was it!

Mrsjayy · 14/07/2021 15:03

Just finished it episode 5 was by far the best I feel totally meh although how many times could they say multiverse 😂

SquatBetty · 14/07/2021 18:09

I agree, ep 5 was definitely the best of them

Just been over on the Hiddlestoners Facebook page - people literally "near tears", "shaking", " hyperventilating" after watching ep 6!

They're all fucking bonkers - it's only a TV programme or am i missing something?

ToastieSnowy · 14/07/2021 18:23

Episode 5 definitely the best. “Hiddlestoners”? Doesn’t sound like they’re chilled out SquatBetty. Didn’t Tom Hiddleston get hounded off social media? He’d do right to keep off it.

Mrsjayy · 14/07/2021 20:30

They are bonkers poor guy was hounded by them 😲 I remember we had the best thread about him and Taylor and some of the fans came for us somebody was getting DMs. Crying and shaking is a bit much Hmm

Itsyoouu · 14/07/2021 20:31

Kang!!!!!

SquatBetty · 14/07/2021 21:10

@Mrsjayy I've read the Tayto threads - they are brilliant!

Yes I've heard his fans described as 'rabid' - poor old Hiddles!

Claymorekick · 14/07/2021 21:25

I saw it but my 12 year old didn't!
MyFloorIsLava · 14/07/2021 21:27

That was crap.

Claymorekick · 14/07/2021 21:31

I was very disappointed tbh. Episode 5 was just so good, episode 6 fell very flat in comparison Sad also, I didn't really understand much of what happened Confused

iklboo · 14/07/2021 21:43

Has anyone here watched Lovecraft Country? A few familiar faces..

Icecreamsoda99 · 14/07/2021 22:26

Jumping on the thread, because I've been reading but not joined in. There was a lot of talking and explanation for a finale. The kiss was well hmm, I just don't feel there is any sexual chemistry between them, platonic love for sure (though even that felt very rushed with not enough time to establish it) but lust/love no, or maybe that was the pont? I really liked the last scene, once it was explained to me that our Loki had been sent to an alternative timeline version of the TVA. Looking forward, somewhat, to Season 2 - I want more of Alligator Loki!

APurpleSquirrel · 14/07/2021 23:26

I enjoyed the episode, but yes, it didn't have the energy or suspense delivered in eps 4&5. However, as there is a season 2 & it's got to lead into the next films & tv series' it's not really surprising there wasn't a huge reveal or resolution.
I guess now the multiverse has been unleashed this paves the way for the animated What if... series as well the next Dr Strange - for which there are rumours of TH reprising his role as Loki.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 15/07/2021 00:27

Meh.

Last weeks was better. It still just seems like an episode of Dr Who.

I don't know anything about Kang or the comics but from what he said it's one giant temporal paradox.

Shit hits the fan.
Kang starts the TVA to stop the rot
The variants rebel
Shit hits the fan again

That kiss was awful.

LemonViolet · 15/07/2021 05:54

Hmmmmm. Yeah.

I’ve found the finales of all 3 Disney+ shows somewhat underwhelming now.

I really thought it was going to be an ultimate Loki…… especially when in the recap they included Mobius saying “you weren’t meant to be a king, Loki” I was triumphant “THEY SAID KING LOKI!!!” so did find the whole Kang thing a bit of a let down, even though it was so so obvious all the way through. Did they actually name him though? It wasn’t really all that clear was it. I only knew who it was because of all the fan theory international chatter.

Yes, a lot of literally sitting down talking, not necessarily making much clear sense, and even Kang’s portable version of Ego’s exposition-animation device didn’t really help to make it less wordy or more show not tell. The least romantic/sexy kiss I’ve ever seen. And I do not understand “alternate timeline TVA”, I thought the TVA was in a no-time zone??? If alternate TVAs are possible, have they been pruning their own branches this entire time?

Questions
Where did Renslayer go?
What happened after B15 showed those Minutemen the original Renslayer - is that now a rebel TVA platoon?
What is ‘our’ Mobius doing back at ‘our’ TVA?
Is Sylvie now just stuck in the citadel at the end of time forever (and do we care)?
What was with those statues in the citadel…..they looked like the timekeepers but there was a fourth, smashed one? What was that about?

I was disappointed there was no real end credit scene. A cute way to announce season 2 (yay!) but would it have killed them to have a scene of Lokigator kicking back with Kid Loki in the paddling pool, struggling to open the boxed Roxxwine or something? Throg still stuck in his jar but placed on display next to Kid Loki’s throne?

Good points
Tom’s performance. He is ace. Loki really, really cares for Sylvie, it doesn’t matter if it is really romantic or not tbh, it’s his first real ‘human’ (I know they’re not humans) connection outside of his adopted family and he is clearly somewhat overwhelmed by it. “I just want you to be ok” was the most honest, touching expression of love. His horror and confusion at the end as he tries to work out why Mobius and B15 don’t recognise him, and then sees the statue of Kang….played superbly.

Mobius confronting Renslayer and failing to physically overcome her - that was brilliantly done. “You’re no threat to me”
“Well let’s see….oh, no, you’re right”.

Kang’s line “come on, we’re all villains here” was very well judged I thought, and served to remind us who we were watching - I think perhaps we had forgotten the horrific things Sylvie has done, burning TVA agents in the oil field etc, and also I think helped to pull Sylvie away from any hesitation she may have had stemming from her feelings for Loki, and pushed her back to her own solo mission she has been on from the start.

I will rewatch and immerse myself in the YouTube videos overanalysing it all….. after this and Black Widow, the next MCU instalments will be in autumn - Shang Chi in September, Eternals in November, No Way Home in December. Hawkeye at some point on Disney+ too. What If? in August I think but I struggle to get excited about animation.

I didn't like it. I felt the mcu was advanced at a cost to the characters. Felt like poor Loki got backhanded to the face as a reward for all his development.

More! Alligator! Loki! Now!

MyFloorIsLava · 15/07/2021 06:35

Don't forget Ms Marvel before the end of the year too :)

MyFloorIsLava · 15/07/2021 06:41

Oh and no he never said he was Kang. I read a review suggesting that was because he isn't going to be 'our' Kang, that will be the variant introduced in the films.

The wandavision finale is better on second viewing. It was crushed by the weight of expectation and Internet hype, but when I watched it again it was sweet, clever and emotional.

LemonViolet · 15/07/2021 07:19

I did forget Ms Marvel! But in my defence thought it was next year.

ToastieSnowy · 15/07/2021 09:04

Loki has developed his character beyond the other Loki’s. He didn’t impulsively pursue the offer of ultimate control, his first thought was for Sylvie to be ok and then he’s rushing back to Mobius to help in the fight to come.

Season 1 has taken him from 2012 glorious purpose Loki to potential hero Loki. I do hope we see that in the other movies /season 2 of Loki. He’d be a formidable hero if he chooses to be but knowing Loki he’d also spread chaos even if unintentionally.

It was a really good series can’t wait to see more.

GrolliffetheDragon · 15/07/2021 11:21

Can't Loki please be happy for once? (And Sylvie)

Thought that was rather good. Couldn't have gone any other way - mission comes first for Sylvie, above everything else. At least she didn't stab him.

Did He Who Remains think it would end any other way? Having manipulated things to that point? And who thinks asking two versions of the god(ess) of mischief to run things in an orderly and ordered fashion would work out well anyway? To quote Mobius "Wherever you go, it's just death, destruction, the literal ends of worlds."
