Loki (Disney+ starting June 11): MCU fans assemble!

Loki starts on Disney+ on June 11!

I know it’s a way away but I thought I’d start a thread for pre-amble pondering discussion seeing as Falcon and the Winter Soldier is over now and we no longer have a weekly MCU fix for a while!

Sometimes I’m wary of trailers, I don’t like to know too many details in advance, but this is good, it doesn’t spoil anything just nicely teases the theme and tone, and looks to be some good chemistry between Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson.

I really like how WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and now Loki are all so different in feel.

Oh and if you’re not a MCU addict want to catch up with the story so far, then this article lists which movies to watch beforehand (nine of them!!!) but really, you could just watch two - the first Thor and Avengers movies, and then jump to Loki from there and you’d be in the same place as our protagonist. It’d be really interesting to hear that perspective actually!

I was so excited about this. Loki is my favourite and DH was so excited to finally watch a Marvel series with me.
We only saw the first episode and were so disappointed.. its soooo slow and boring? Literally nothing happened. We arent sure if we should continue, lost interest pretty much. Does it get better?

ToastieSnowy · 24/06/2021 11:09

Episode 1 is not fast paced in terms of action but it is very fast paced in terms of dialogue and emotion. I loved it.

I did want more TVA/Sylvie story development in episode 3, but Loki talking about his mum and showing the fireworks was so sweet. I’m still not sure if Sylvie actually is a “Loki” as she seems to work differently to our Loki. Guess we’ll see.

TricksyLiesmith · 24/06/2021 11:24

I'm enjoying it hugely but admit the plot is a little thin at the moment .

From what TH had said in interviews ep 4 is a biggy so looking forward to next week .

Loki drunk singing was amazing though. Tom is such a good singer . He was fab in I saw the light.

Ending of the episode is what I'm hoping to see more of. Great action and lots of magic.

GrolliffetheDragon · 24/06/2021 12:05

Loving all of it and haven't found it boring at all.

Also great to see Loki finally using more magic after using next to none in the films.

APurpleSquirrel · 24/06/2021 14:02

I thought this was an interesting episode. Sylvie is a 'Loki' but they've already said in different timelines each person is different.
But did anyone else catch it when she said she'd been running from the TVA for most of her life? Does that mean she was a child when she became a variant?
Also, how old is she? If time passes differently & that guard was hundreds of years old, maybe Sylvie is really old hence she no longer thinks/acts like a Loki?
& finding out the Timekeepers are all variants too - as Loki said, do they know? How did they end up there? Did they all do something bad to end up at the TVA? Or can you be good & still end up as a variant? Have their memories been altered?

If she is an frost giant made to look asguardian like our loki, she could be hundreds of years old.

She said something about the timekeepers having their memories suppressed, but I wonder if deep down they know something isn't right. Mobius seems very discontent, the jet ski thing was odd too. Maybe he remembers them from his life.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 24/06/2021 18:19

Sorry, bold fail.

LemonViolet · 24/06/2021 19:25

On the topic of frost giants though….why isn’t Loki blue when he is in the TVA no-time zone? Magic doesn’t work there!!!

Although Sylvie did manage a little green flash before she realised her enchantment wouldn’t work when she arrived there.

I liked this episode the best so far, I just liked watching the two of them together.

I liked the reveal that all the TVA people are variants too, surely they don't know? I think you're right whatsnew and Mobius likes her skis because of his original life.

JM10 · 24/06/2021 20:31

Clearly her should be jet 🤦🏼‍♀️

exLtEveDallas · 25/06/2021 06:14

I like the episode but it didn’t grab me as much as the first two. Sylvia is good, just enough sarcasm and wit to be a female version of Loki - but she reminds me so much of Jodi Whittaker that I keep expecting a Tardis.

Not sure I like this version of Loki (TH). He seems to be more ‘Infinity’ than ‘Assemble’ and that doesn’t work for the timeline (any timeline). ‘Assemble’ Loki was all bad, he didn’t change until after his mother’s death/his imprisonment and that hasn’t happened yet.

I agree @exLtEveDallas
He just seems a bit (I'm gonna whisper it) bumbling. I keep expecting him to start Frank Spencering it up and come out with "ooh Sylvie, the cat's done a whoopsie on the floor!"

Hopefully he's playing a long game though....

He hasn't gone through it, but he has watched it and seemed very effected by that.
Whatsnewpussyhat · 25/06/2021 09:29

That's why they had to shoehorn that bit in where he watches his own future/death. He doesn't really soften until Ragnorok because he realises that his mum/dad/brother do actually truely love him, despite him being a knobhead. He loses the bitterness.

As the wise trolls in Frozen sing;

"People make bad choices if they're mad or scared or stressed, but throw a little love their way and you'll bring out their best"

However, I doubt the same change would take place in 10 mins of watching future memories.

exLtEveDallas is right, this Loki should be mean and selfish. He's a bit pathetic at the moment.

MyFloorIsLava · 25/06/2021 11:58

That was always going to be a problem for this show. Assemble Loki was very evil and really wasn't ever completely redeemed, imo - he still tried to sell Thor out to the Grandmaster in Ragnarok. Any heroism was always self serving. Its hard to make him a sympathetic lead and they shouldn't have tried. But looking back at Ragnarok (watched it last night), Mobius was correct when he said Loki was a loser. He was, his schemes were always half arsed failures. So I guess a bumbling idiot is in keeping.

GrolliffetheDragon · 25/06/2021 13:41

I don't know, not watched Thor for ages, but his schemes worked for a fair bit of it?

Avengers - well it wasn't completely his scheme, even if it aligned with his goals. Though maybe he did lack conviction, he was being threatened with dire consequences if he didn't succeed...

Thor 2 ended up with him on the throne of Asgard.

Ragnarok, he seemed to be doing ok on Sakaar until Thor showed up and caused trouble.

Infinity War - yeah. Got nothing for that, it was stupid.

Except now we know there could have been no other outcome. Anytime he was more successful that variant would have been pruned and the sacred timeline restored. The fact they've dealt with so many Loki variants suggests this must happen a lot.

The Scarlet Witch, multiple versions of Loki. Seems to be a lot of chaos building up in the MCU, clearly the universe is not liking order being imposed.

Yes, and knowing this would piss him off more. His goal I this is to meet the time gods. Maybe he thinks he could control or manipulate them.

It's all leading to the multiverse of madness so some part of the taking down of the TVA must surely happen?

exLtEveDallas · 25/06/2021 16:44

Had another thought.

End credits of GotG2, Stan Lee talking to 3 hooded figures “I’ve got more stories to tell” do you think they might be the Timekeepers?

Sokovianfortuneteller · 25/06/2021 19:05

I’m so glad it’s not just me that is thinking it’s a bit like Doctor Who! Especially the bit in Pompeii in episode 2.
I am enjoying it but wanted it to be a bit better. I just really loved WandaVision and neither this nor TFATWS have lived up to it so far.

Sparticle · 25/06/2021 22:34

Finally caught up on eps 2 and 3 back to back. DS and I are loving it although DS had to explain to me why Sylvia would be hiding in the apocalypses!

I like the wordiness of it - as someone who did a few modules of philosophy and ethics years ago at uni, I particularly liked that discussion about free will.

Love the cliffhanger on the planet, I think either Mobius will rescue them (because he can jump about through all the apocalypses searching for them?) or Loki was lying when he showed Sylvie the broken gadget.

YY to it being just like Dr Who though. And I found some it SO dark that we could barely see it on the screen, even with curtains drawn :(

LemonViolet · 26/06/2021 02:15

Doctor Who actually did Pompeii better than that scene with the goats and Loki’s Latin monologue. Although I did enjoy that scene here.

Those 3 beings in GOTG2 were the Watchers, although not much actual mention/explanation of them happened. I saw a theory on YT earlier that Stan Lee is the ‘postman’ Sylvie referred to having a relationship with! Although I think she was just being sarcastic.

My theory is that the Timekeepers aren’t real. It’s maybe all run automatically after being set up aeons ago. Another friend of mine has a theory that the Timekeepers are ancient versions of Nexus beings (perhaps even a very old future Loki is one of them), and thinks one of the statues has something that looks like Wanda’s crown as well.

Interesting. Just had a google and it says Wanda, Loki, Vision and Dr Strange are a few of them so could tie in nicely to the new film although some sources have Loki in DrS2 and some say not.
I'm sure I read a while ago that Tom's version of Loki would end in this series but who knows.

FYI - there's an end of credits scene in this week's episode
