New dram series starts tonight on bbc 1

With only hours left to deliver a draft of a book to her publishers , writer Arabella is tempted into a night out with a friend ........

the series is set in London and centers around the story of a young woman who must rebuild her life after her drink is spiked with a date rape drug

I absolutely love this show. I find the main characters simultaneously loveable and exasperating-it reminds me of my twenties in London.
The scene in the police station where it hit her that she'd been attacked made me cry.

ncqtime · 19/06/2020 21:50

Ps agreed on your kwame points newnewt!

NewNewt · 19/06/2020 21:58

What I found strange though was why she lied to say she was still busy in the room

Really? Grin

yourmajestyqueenoftheharpies · 19/06/2020 23:03

*I didn't think Terry was upset by the threesome as she said she once had one in response to bring asked what was the most freeing thing she'd ever done
*
It wasn't the first thing she thought of though was it. I thought it was a brilliant way of showing how we often try and reframe things we've done to try and change the way we feel about them, she's trying to tell herself it was "freeing" and she was powerful and denying the reality.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/06/2020 23:12

Wow. Just seen e4

So much to take in

Zain sneaky with the condom. Agree A be more cross with him

I’m rubbish with names Of the 3 gay black men so bare with me. Hopefully get the gist

So One isn’t sure if gay /wants a threesome

They go to Stranger blokes house. He has sex with him, with other one watching. Not sure about joining in then uncomfortable watching them have sex

Then the stranger not only rapes him. Does it bareback as well

Power :(

Not sure if the one who got raped and his relationship with arabella. Just friends?

Does he know about her rape and hence why he rang her , with tears down his cheek to try and tell her

Was powerful acting

Yes @yourmajestyqueenoftheharpies completely agree re the reframing.
How many women do this to make our truths more palatable?

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 20/06/2020 06:29

Cast list here.

Perhaps your sentence would have been equally clear if you had said 'the three gay men'? (Or even 'the three men', since the context was obvious?)

Not so much a typo, more a Freudian slip??

Bluemoooon · 20/06/2020 06:49

i bow down to your wokeness Perdita - But if everyone talks about the men surely it will get confusing.

IamHyouweegobshite · 20/06/2020 07:52

I've watched all 4 eps. I would have been so pissed at zain. Kwame has lots of casual hookups, but then insinuated to the guy that he doesn't actually have penetrative sex? Unless I misheard. So the guy basically does what he wants, twice. So bloody dangerous. No safe sex.

FabulouslyElegantTits · 20/06/2020 09:20

Ooh I'll put this on my watch list - cheers

CherryValanc · 20/06/2020 09:57

No he said he didnt do bare back. So first time the hookup guy used a condom. Second time he forced himself on Kwame without condom.
Bbq1 · 20/06/2020 11:04

Am I the only person who didn't have a clue what was going on and really didn't like it? I watched the first episode and didn't have a clue what was real/imagined/flashback. It just seemed to consist of people constantly taking drugs and having sex. Tried with 2nd episode but found it even more confusing and uncomfortable. Do people really fill their entire time taking massive amounts of drugs and having casual sex?

ncqtime · 20/06/2020 12:52

@NewNewt yeah unless my sleep deprived brain is making me imagine things she was asked if she wanted to go out with Arabella and Biagio but said she was still busy even though she'd watched the boys walk off

ncqtime · 20/06/2020 13:04

@Blondeshavemorefun

'Does he know about her rape and hence why he rang her , with tears down his cheek to try and tell her'

He rang her and was crying because he just got raped! Wouldn't you perhaps think of calling a good friend even if you couldn't get the words out? Whether he knows about her rape or not isn't relevant to the phone call surely?

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/06/2020 13:15

Tbh I couldn’t work our their relationship at first. Then Obviously reliesed he was gay

But wasn’t sure why he called her and not a male possibly gay friend

I thought he rang her coz of her ordeal :(

Maybe I’m watching it wrong

And yes he didn’t want bareback. So double whammy - raped and risk now of std esp as rapist bloke obv doesn’t like using condoms

Episode 4 happens two months after Arabella has been assaulted.

As Kwame was the person who accompanied her to the police station after the incident he absolutely did know about it before the hook up that left him calling her in tears.

Awful to think he showed up for her but she was too busy with her own concerns to realise when he needed her.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 20/06/2020 13:36

I imagine he called her because he doesn't have any male friends he trusts enough to share this particular trauma with.

Also it's a TV show, so better to keep events within a select group rather than introducing more random characters!

Friends replacing family as the people you rely on seems to be one of the main themes of the story. I read a review of Episode 3 that raised the possibility of Terry being more than a little envious of Arabella - but I'm not sure where that leads ...

NewNewt · 20/06/2020 16:22

@ncqtime

no I meant I took it that she was still busy becasue she needed to "finish herself off" because the 2 men had only cared about themselves and the threesome had been disappointing sexually, as well as the realisation that they'd played her. All the sex looks disappointing tbh, from the women's point of view. I assume that's Michaela Cole's take on selfish, entitled millenial men. With the whole condom removal thing.

buildingbridge · 21/06/2020 20:30

I loved this programme.

I'm in my 20's but was quite nerved about the constant drug taking, and was not common in my friendship groups. I actually found it quite sad but could see how people find it liberating.....

I love the Italian guy!

Zain was an idiot, but I don't think the taking off the condom was "intentional" as he seemed quite blase' about it. Though, I think it's is highlighting the selfishness of some men when it comes to sex.

Someone mentioned about Normal People... the sex there seemed more genuine and more passionate. The sex in 'I may destroy' seems a bit depressing... it doesn't look enjoyable (to me) and appears to be a quick scratch and then off they go.

NoProblem123 · 21/06/2020 23:19

I find the whole story line really sad tbh, they look like their having the time of their lives with pursuing interesting careers that they love, going out drinking, taking drugs, great sex lives, great friends, etc.
Their reality is very different.
Powerful acting by main character, never seen her before.

Ulysses · 22/06/2020 17:08

I've just watched episodes 5 and 6 and there's a lot to unpackage there. There's a few jaw dropping moments along the way and an interesting new character in episode 6. It's brilliantly done and I am very invested now and it's tantalising that I'm having to wait another week to see the next two.

NewNewt · 22/06/2020 19:08

I'll wait until everyone has catched up but just watched ep 5 - how did the British Museum assistant girl convey it to Arabella that it wasn't the first time? Didn't see that?

NewNewt · 22/06/2020 19:09

caught up!

mizu · 22/06/2020 19:46

Ooh will watch later. Does anyone know how many episodes there are?

Ulysses · 22/06/2020 20:08

12 in total @mizu. it was while they were chatting before she did her slot at the Literary Talk, @NewNewt. So after the meeting with the publishers were Zain appeared last minute.
