New dram series starts tonight on bbc 1

With only hours left to deliver a draft of a book to her publishers , writer Arabella is tempted into a night out with a friend ........

the series is set in London and centers around the story of a young woman who must rebuild her life after her drink is spiked with a date rape drug

Absolutely, Meowstro. It seems odd, in the light of comings and goings from the Equadorian embassy, that this was brushed off so apparently easily. Perhaps it will be taken up later in the series.

Can't remember exactly, but did Zain, in his 'my background' speech, mean that he'd been picked up by a big firm but then dropped and thus found himself with her publishers? Need to watch that bit again.

Chienloup I know what you mean about the nightclub scene. It made me feel really weird as it was so well done. Coming up on drugs like that and the out of control feeling. The craziness of youth! And the fact it's so normal!

I'm finding this both compelling and shocking to watch. I think I'm mostly shocked how middle aged I've become and aghast at what the young un's are getting up to these days - all that hedonism!

I'm really looking forward to how it pans out. Michaela Coel is fascinating to watch.

Just watched 4 episodes and it's depressing. Casual abusive sex when off your head on drugs

Perhaps not quite your thing, 2Rebecca?

Yes it is a bit depressing. Well written and acted though. Looks great. An interesting commentary on 20 something city life. Miles from my life now but I lived a version of that once.

The characters are great.

Tbh the sex is more real than bloody Normal People in its endless high intensity shagging.

I absolutely love this! It really is one of the best things I've watched in ages.

Very fair comment Grin

I love it, and its brilliant, but it does make me feel old. I'm 40 so hardly ancient, but I find myself worrying for them all. I'm a square who's only ever done fags and alcohol so the drug use is quite disturbing. I remember being drunk out of my skull in clubs many times and being just as out of control as Bella, and it wasnt a happy time looking back

The consent issue in different contexts is really well explored

On the sex side of things, I did find i was feeling very Mary Whitehouse about the two young men (Kwame and other man*) setting up a meeting where one was just watching!!! What was that about! It was all very odd to me - like a scientific observer sat close by or maybe a judge

Wonder if Kwame is going to report his rape. I'm not sure he's even going to tell Anabella.

*I found their relationship difficult to figure out.

The up with Kwame just seemed to appear. Thought I had missed something!

The gay quick hookups is definitely a thing (says my gay friend) especially in cities with big gay cultures. Also the watching thing not uncommon.

I know gay hookups are a thing, and I know dogging is a thing, but seeing it like that was just so weird!!!

He was casual and unaroused. Just hanging around on his own with his coat on, like he was queuing to get into the supermarket thinking about what to make for dinner. (Well at the start anyway - then he got bothered and left.)

Again, I seem to be the only person seeing the subtleties on this show :). Whilst I am quite sure that watching (and wanking) only is a thing. But in this case, I think it was more that the other guy was not out as gay and was clearly nervous and inexperienced - I think he was meant to be completely new to gay hookups. Hence why Kwame suggest he just watch one to see how he felt and, presumably, whether he would like to have a go. Not what I would have chosen to reassure a nervous person but there you go.

I took it more as a commentary on the stigma still of being openly gay, for many, particularly among black men and that Kwame was trying to help him with that.

I agree. I think Kwame also genuinely fancied him and wanted him to get involved

Nope, your perception is faulty! I'm having no trouble at all with discerning either subtle or unsubtle points. Grin

(I may have felt moved to wonder exactly what is preventing some viewers from thoroughly enjoying this show - but I guess everyone's different ...)

Not really, it wasn't subtle that he was unsure. What was weird was the standing there just nonchalantly. If he had been walking it would have made more sense. (Unless he was subtly wanking!)

Poor Kwame, he's got a lot to contend with now.

Well whatever he was doing, yes it looked awkward.

Making a cup,of tea?

Report
NewNewt · 19/06/2020 16:18

I disagree. He wasn't looking nonchalant. he was looking awkward and uncomfortable and that is why he left. Because he is not openly gay or has recently come out. That is in no way typical of what an experienced watcher would be doing according to my gay contact.

NewNewt · 19/06/2020 16:24

And Kwame clearly hoped it would develop into a threesome and was encouraging him to join in before it got too much for him and he left

Report
SinisterBumFacedCat · 19/06/2020 19:15

I don’t think Keane was fussed about him joining in. Honestly I think he took him along as an ego boost, he knew he wasn’t out and wasn’t as experienced. I think it was showing off, the poor guy had been really into Kwame, he would have liked a normal date, ended up watching his date fucking someone else feeling really awkward. Just a bit grim really.

Ok, sorry I see you're being quite serious about it. The set up just amused me - which did cause Kwame's rape to be quite a jolt. Possibly purposely done the constant of emotion.

I didn't think Terry was upset by the threesome as she said she once had one in response to bring asked what was the most freeing thing she'd ever done. I read the guys walking away as them just having bonded and happened to be walking in the same direction sort of thing. What I found strange though was why she lied to say she was still busy in the room. Or was that the point at which she was supposedly upset?
