New dram series starts tonight on bbc 1

With only hours left to deliver a draft of a book to her publishers , writer Arabella is tempted into a night out with a friend ........

the series is set in London and centers around the story of a young woman who must rebuild her life after her drink is spiked with a date rape drug

Cherry - because she realised that they knew it other and had somewhat set her up. They pretended that they didnt know each other at the bar so she thought she was consenting to sex with 2 men she had bumped into separately but they were mates. She was trying to be all cool about having a threesone but then felt used i guess.

CherryValanc · 16/06/2020 06:36

Oh right, so they manipulated her into it.

I had thought it was because she'd wasn't happy because he was having sex with her and wasn't interested in her satisfaction. Couldn't figure out why that ties in with them leaving together.

But that makes more sense. She had thought two men independently liked her, and she was in control but realised they'd used her and she was of no interest to them - ties in with them not being interested in her sexual pleasure.

Now seems stupid I didn't cop that!!!

Also, the 'may dusturb' warning, please tell me it wasn't because periods featured.

Ellabella222 · 16/06/2020 07:45

It’s realty really good. I am middle aged and it’s very far from my experience though! The hook ups, the very casual drug use. Also glad I’m not having to navigate all of that.

Agree about the 3some. She suddenly felt set up I think. None of the sex looks like much fun tbh.
I really like the Italian drug dealer guy.

NewNewt · 16/06/2020 09:46

That's exactly what i thought, thank god im not single and having to use all those apps for instant sex, i do worry about my teens though.

Also thought that about the sex. Despite the so called progressive attitudes it seems all about the man (on top) banging away and getting pleasure. Nobody seems to care about foreplay or the womens experience. It was ever thus for one night stands I guess but I do seem to remember at least a bit of fondling.

Deathraystare · 16/06/2020 11:49

I am glad people have explained what is going on. My fault, I did not see the first episode(s)!

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/06/2020 19:34

I've just watched ep 3, I'm confused was the first 2eps a different story and 3 Is completely different? When is ep4 out Confused

catpoooffender · 16/06/2020 23:26

Ep 3 recounts what happened three months prior to the events in the first two episodes.

catpoooffender · 16/06/2020 23:26

Ep 4 is available to watch now

SinisterBumFacedCat · 17/06/2020 09:59

God it makes me feel old! Never got the pissing in front of your friends thing, let alone changing a towel. And taking a first date to a threesome?

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 17/06/2020 10:15

This has been great - really sinister and unnerving yet funny. How does she manages to make the humour so light and not detract or minimise the dark stuff? The bit where Terry watched the men leave together was heart breaking.

I think I love every Michaela Coel's done. Neither DH nor I can say Stormzy with squealing it like Boy Tracey in Chewing Gum.

LatinforTelly · 17/06/2020 14:33

I thought this was good, but like pps, it makes me feel very, very old. So many recreational drugs and casual sex. Glad I'm out of it but I worry for my teens.

It's very well acted. Michaela Coel in particular is brilliant. Are we supposed to know who the rapist is? In the flashbacks I think it looks like the housemate (who said he'd do painting ) but he wasn't on the night out, was he?

slartibarti · 17/06/2020 18:40

The warning should have said not to watch while eating lunch. Was just tucking into lasagne and chips and suddenly lost my appetite.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 17/06/2020 20:17

Oh my! Ep 3 is outstanding.

I have zero experience of illegal substances, so I did worry for them. But Michaela Cole really knows how to fill the screen with food for the eyes. And more great music. Loved it.

On to Ep 4 ...

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 17/06/2020 20:19

Coel not Cole. Ignorant phone.

fairydustandpixies · 17/06/2020 22:06

Just joining late to the party! Watched E1 to 4 back to back this evening. I'm very disturbed by it.

But the main actress, wow! She has amazing cheekbones (just have to say that!).

fairydustandpixies · 17/06/2020 22:08

Just read up thread that this is based on a true story? Lost for words...

Lottapianos · 17/06/2020 22:13

I agree, fairy. Shes utterly stunning

It's an amazing series, and that was an amazing episode, although I found it hard to believe Biagio's reaction to certain things he discovered in bed (trying to avoid spoilers). Woudnt most blokes be a bit horrified, or at least taken aback, or am I just very old?

yourmajestyqueenoftheharpies · 17/06/2020 22:15

The drug taking reminds me of my hedonistic 20s, makes me yearn for a bit but then also think "thank god that's over".

Loved the growing sexual chemistry between her and the posh guy, shame but realistic of him to turn out to be a massive entitled twat.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 17/06/2020 22:27

Don't know about 'most' men, Lotta - some are blessed with curiosity and / or scientific interest in their youth. Can't imagine a mature man being in any way fazed.

Ep 4 was harder to watch. I'm far more furious with Zain than Arabella appeared to be.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 17/06/2020 22:39

I interpreted Zain's actions as vindictive retaliation against someone who had the temerity to score a book deal and public acclaim without the benefit of a Creative Writing MSt from Cambridge.

Ellabella222 · 17/06/2020 23:12

I love her Italian BF.

Chienloup · 18/06/2020 00:54

I still need to watch Ep4. But I found Ep3 really uncomfortable - it reminded me of all the stupid things I used to do in my 20s and I had that horrible sense of being out of control. The bit in the club just before Terry leaves, I found painful to watch. But it is brilliantly written, beautifully shot, and utterly compelling.

Meowstro · 18/06/2020 01:36

I'm married but remember just before lockdown leaving a bar, a little tipsy on my own, Terry leaving really unnerved me and I'll be thinking twice about that.

The thing with Zain was a power move, like all rape is but this was a different kind of rape that we don't often see or hear about. Vindictive is definitely the right word for it. I do hope more people see this lack of consent and understand it is still rape.
