New dram series starts tonight on bbc 1

With only hours left to deliver a draft of a book to her publishers , writer Arabella is tempted into a night out with a friend ........

the series is set in London and centers around the story of a young woman who must rebuild her life after her drink is spiked with a date rape drug

@KittyWindbag yes noticed that. Not too sure why though- possible the bar staff was supposed to be her.

She was also doubled in the Firestarter scene - walking away dressed in the clothes she wore on the night she was raped.

I didn't notice if she doubled in the first one (the killed by knickers one) as I was watching that as if it were how things were unfolding rather than symbolic (if that makes sense.).

dorthopa · 16/07/2020 07:59

I think I would like to watch it again without constantly worrying about poor Ben being the rapist Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/07/2020 08:08

Thanks @Lottapianos. How did I miss that 😂😂

I missed it too the first time. Only found out about it on this thread, then watched it back and was like OH MY GOD! Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/07/2020 11:47

I was also very relieved Ben was a good 'in too.

Yes! I noticed the Firestarter double bit and in the last sequence , the bar lady had the wig too.

Dreamlike is an excellent description .. it's like almost normal but somethings off, like those dreams when you wake up in the dream convinced for a second you are awake but something isn't as it should be and you realise, bugger, I'm still asleep Confused

famousforwrongreason · 16/07/2020 14:47

@Lottapianos

'How many mins is hovering figure and is it e 9/10'

It's in the first minute or so. Shes sitting on her bed, Ben comes past and asks her if shes ok, then theres a wide shot of her bedroom and you see it

Wow. Completely missed this.

I just rewatched the final episode. Arabella double doesn’t appear in the first ending and neither is the girl behind the bar with the purple wig. However there is a bright pink hue used in all of the shots of the bar scene that makes all of the women that are stood/sat at the bar’s hair look pink. Also Theo has two streaks of pink in her hair.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/07/2020 18:01

I need to rewatch as I'm sure Firestarter Bella danced with Cardigan Bella for a few seconds.

We're all second guessing what we've seen now Smile

Rollergirl11 · 16/07/2020 18:41

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz yes she did. The 2nd ending has Firestarter Arabella dancing with original Arabella with pink wig. The 3rd ending has girl behind the bar with purple wig. The first ending doesn’t have double Arabella or girl behind the bar with purple wig.

The obsessed with podcast has Michaela Coel on as a guest. It's good - she said there's loads of easter eggs throughout!

Rollergirl11 · 16/07/2020 19:42

Also how long do you think it’s supposed to be that she’s writing, so from when Zain leaves to when she’s out in the courtyard with Ben? You see her underarm hair growing in the clips of her putting the post-it notes on the walls so I had in my head that around a month had passed.

Lardlizard · 16/07/2020 21:43

I’m confused after watching this ?!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 17/07/2020 06:47

Definitely going to rewatch now to keep an eye out for easter eggs, whatever they are...

EggBoxes · 17/07/2020 13:22

I have binged this over the week.

I really liked the theme of splitting of good and bad. Made me think of our borderline process (I can admit that mine is strong) and how the work is to integrate the good and the bad in to the whole. I could see this motif throughout the series, and I liked how as a viewer we don't get anyone wrapped up in to a neat parcel.

I'm a white, middle-aged Yorkshire woman so the cultural context was very unfamiliar to me - the music, the language, the lifestyle, the importance of social media etc.

Lardlizard · 17/07/2020 13:48

Maybe The main girl was also a bit of user the way she made Ben pay the rent more than once, perhaps she took advantage of his loneliness ??

MayDayFightsBack · 17/07/2020 16:08

I absolutely loved this, brilliant writing that made you think. I loved the way that you thought a story was going to go one way and then it never did.

Chewing Gum, on the other hand, is bloody awful. It’s a bit like Shameless, which I also loathed.

monkeyonthetable · 19/07/2020 12:12

Late to this discussion but I have just finished watching and think it's the best thing I've seen in ages, maybe in years. It's so refreshing for it not to have been squeezed through the script factory mill (Ben would have been the rapist if it had, I bet.) It's so refreshing that none of the characters are good or bad and there is no neat, tidy closure. I loved everything about it. Loved the filming and the colouring of London nightlife, the bridges and alleyways. Loved the Easter Eggs and the comedy and the information (I wouldn't have known that what Zain did constitutes rape) and the dialogue. Just brilliant.

happinessischocolate · 19/07/2020 14:30

Just finished it too, an amazing series.

Arabella really annoyed me to begin with, I found her very entitled with her 'I can take drugs and drink too much, but everyone else is responsible for my safety' attitude.

The teen years annoyed me so so much, but then I'm in my 50s, have never taken drugs and have 2 teenagers so I'm way too old for that shit 😁

Arabella did grow on my though, and I felt she finally grew up after apologising to Kwame for locking him in the room.

The endings were brilliant, and I took it as it didn't really matter what happened to the rapists, she needed to find a way to heal and move on.

Oh and I never doubted Ben, I've lived in flatshares with people like him, and they're not the arseholes or weirdos, the arseholes are there in plain sight.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 19/07/2020 17:05

I’ve been away so only managed to watch the last 2 episodes today. Brilliant. I feel full up!

HeIenaDove · 20/07/2020 03:12

I watched all the episodes of this over the weekend on Saturday night and Sunday night.

Im 47 and have never been drunk let alone done drugs so those bits wernt relatable to me. But have had close shaves when i was a teen. I was living with DH by the time i was 19 so didnt do what most did in their 20s as in going out clubbing..... This was really really well done And im glad the non consensual removing the condom during sex was part of the storyline. Because it raises more awareness of it. It is rape Consent to protected sex is not consent to unprotected sex.

But i thought this was really

HeIenaDove · 20/07/2020 03:13

...............really good.

HeIenaDove · 20/07/2020 03:14

re close shaves.................dodgy incidents with men

HeIenaDove · 20/07/2020 18:26

www.redonline.co.uk/red-women/news-in-brief/a32889894/michaela-coel-i-may-destroy-you/

A longer version of this interview was in last months Red, MC talks about being compared with Phoebe Waller Bridge. And says a group she is not really compared with enough are working class writers largely because there are so few of them producing work in the UK

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 29/07/2020 22:15

Rewatching now to spot easter eggs but nothing.

bringbacksideburns · 31/07/2020 20:57

I want to watch it all again from the beginning now

Me too.
How often can you say that about TV today?

The ending was perfect and realistic - just her smiling and running on the beach going back to her carefree self. I didn't see anyone else and don't think there was meant to be. Just her finding herself again.
