Oh and the detective is the greasy Mr Collins from Pride & Prejudice. David Bamber is a great actor.

If I remember right Claudie Blakeley was in it too, as her character was the one who married Mr Collins.

notanotherjigsawpiece · 25/02/2020 22:09

Where is the new boyfriend’s accent meant to be from?

It’s Stephen Rea’s usual accent - N. Ireland

Honeyroar · 25/02/2020 22:11

😊😊Oh! I thought it was a fake accent.😀

notanotherjigsawpiece · 25/02/2020 22:33

Haha I know what you mean Grin. I have an NI accent and I’m so self conscious of it as it can sound a bit weird to others.

LittleRootie · 25/02/2020 22:40

I assumed the pills were viagra and when Stephen Rea's character went to take one they were all gone and then we see Imelda Staunton has got them.

Winniewonka · 25/02/2020 23:34

I was reading an old magazine recently, I think it was the September issue and this programme was listed in the upcoming TV section. I'm guessing they held it back because of the similarity to the BBC's Gold Digger shown in the Autumn.
I prefer this as I like the slightly comedic element, Imelda Staunton is fabulous as usual playing 'poor' Mary next door, always in the shadow of the 'perfect' Vivienne. The scene where she first of all steamed open the parcel letting the viewer think she was just ultra nosey and then we saw her wearing the robe but managing to spill gravy on it, was so well written!
Glad they're showing it nightly as it keeps up the pace.

The80sweregreat · 26/02/2020 06:19

I am catching up today as too tired to watch it all last night ( just past him buying her a car. )
Simon , I can imagine your jealous of Russell's boyfriend , he is so cute!

Monty27 · 26/02/2020 06:26

Re the next door neighbour (can't remember her name).
Did I miss how she lost her child and if so fill me in.
I have a mad plot in my head that the widow's bf is her son.
I'm rubbish at names.
And yes totally like Gold Digger with possibly a twist Wink

SimonJT · 26/02/2020 06:32

It didn’t say how her son died.

I liked how she planted ideas into the children’s heads when she saw them.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/02/2020 06:42

The neighbour (it's Mary isn't it?) is evil under that homely exterior. Clearly she has been storing up years and years of resentment and jealousy towards the Francesca Annis character.

I like the youngest daughter (the one with the silver fox lover) but neither of the other two 'children'.

AnyFucker · 26/02/2020 06:55

Imelda Staunton is just brilliant in everything she does

Janus · 26/02/2020 07:54

Monty, the widow’s boyfriend is 73, Mary would have to be in her 90s to be his mum!
I do think somehow Mary was there when the ‘incident’ happened and maybe she ends up killing the boyfriend in self defence of someone else.
I’m really enjoying it, much, much more than gold digger!

WhatKatyDidNot · 26/02/2020 09:57

Imelda Staunton is going to turn out to be Francesca Annis's dead husband's "other woman", right?

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/02/2020 10:18

Imelda Staunton is going to turn out to be Francesca Annis's dead husband's "other woman", right? I think so.

The80sweregreat · 26/02/2020 10:36

The neighbour Mary is defo something to do with the dead husband I think. He sounded a womaniser.
I need to catch up today

Batmansmummy · 26/02/2020 10:42

I think the body bag could be the women that the oldest daughter fired !
She seems to be getting pretty stalkerish !

The80sweregreat · 26/02/2020 13:56

Was the women eldest daughter fired the one he ( her husband) was chatting to in the pub?
Poor car ! Nice car too.

Mooserp · 26/02/2020 13:57

The daughter being questioned by police didn't seem upset about the 'incident'. So it can't be one of the family.

I like how Mary took his viagra 😄 IS is so good.

Mooserp · 26/02/2020 13:57

80s - yes it was. Out for revenge

The80sweregreat · 26/02/2020 14:23

I thought it was her.
Oh dear. She might be the victim , but I think it's one of the family now as they are interviewing them. The daughter that's pregnant might just be good at poker faces?
The wife of the grey haired man also is a bit deranged too , so could be her?
I think son set fire to the car but maybe only to see if it's insured or on credit? Could be a red herring there.
It's intriguing me now.

stumbledin · 26/02/2020 14:47

I think Stephen Rea's character set fire to the car as he cant afford it really and so can claim the insurance money back! All this manouevering to get Francesca Annis to just over the border from Gibralter. And doubt there is a daughter. Though as one of them googled him wouldn't they also look to see if he had a daughter.

The boss with the silver hair is always playing characters like this (there was one only last month) but he is also the actor who threw all Poldark fans into a seething rage as he was written in as a real life character of the time who was heavily involved in anti slavery. Very over the top performance, but he was probably glad not to be playing yet again a 2 timing husband. Vincent Reagan? Oh yes he played the unpleasant father in the Scottish thriller about a young woman who joined a prestigous university department back in the home town where her mother had been murdered.

I usually like Stephen Rea and think he is a good actor, both in comeday and dramas. But he looks uncomfortable as an ageing romeo.

But it is a shame there is so many similatities to Gold Digger.

This often happens in soaps. They all seem to get the same story line at about the same time.

Or maybe it is the writers who think in cliched so they all have the children acting up like spoilt brats and so on.

Getting really upset that Sharon Small would pay even a penny to have sex with a neanderthal. Just so unpleasant as a character and as a muscle bound skin head.

I suppose each night we will see a different character being interviewed so by a process of elimination by the end of the week we will have a better idea of who has been attacked.

In fact is there not only a murder (body in the bag) but also someone badly hurt (in hospital). With any luck it will be Stepen Rea and the Neanderthal.

UntamedWisteria · 26/02/2020 16:02

The blue pills were Viagra. Imelda staunton was reading the leaflet which clearly said something about Erectile Disfunction.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 26/02/2020 16:08

I'm thinking it's not a family member who is seriously ill in hospital though, as the last scene showed the coppers discussing "they've gone into theatre now." Presumably, if it was a family member, the youngest DD would have been told too?

The80sweregreat · 26/02/2020 16:10

Could he have doctored the Internet with his credentials about being a doctor? Seems far fetched , but he may be an Internet wizard and made up something on there? Not sure how easy this would to do but I bet some people have paid for this to be done ? Is there a register of doctors somewhere? I'm not sure it is him though and his just a red herring as we are just meant to think he is dodgy , so therefore his actually ok? Maybe just a bit skint?
Stella is the only nice one in it so .. it must be her! I love her nightie's they are so elegant and not like my own ' 2 for 12 pounds ' from Sainsbury's!

mummmy2017 · 26/02/2020 16:20

I thought the mum and children were all out back when the car went up.
Also it was seconds after t,he new husband went inside the house, so think neighbor Mary did it.
Yes the children were teens when affair was happening, so that would explain the way Mary is.
It was a goodbye dinner.
