New itv series - 4 parts - runs mon to thur

When recently widowed Vivienne announces her love for new man Mark, it throws the family of adult children into chaos

With their large family home and inheritance at risk , the siblings try to find out more about their mums new love

Sounds like the recent toy boy drama and mum meets new man ....... minus being a toy boy 😂😂

I was a bit disappointed with this tbh.

Everyone was so extremely flawed, except Viv and Leila.

I suspected it was Mary doing it all along, but we never really found out if it was all down to her; she was creepy as hell though.

However, Mark also wasn't truely how he presented himself, lots of questions hanging there. So I suspect it was a combination of Mark and Mary, sort of pulling Viv between them; and the children as well, everyone wanted a piece of Viv.

So many questions unanswered that I wonder if the makers are hoping to revisit this in the future.

Too many attempts at twists and turns, in what was really a rather weak plot - one of which was Mark being the one ending up in hospital when, I suspect, the viewer was suppose to think it would be Viv, not that much of a surprise or twist. The writers clearly thought we'd all be on the edge of our seats, given the way they dragged it out until the very end.

One thing that did stick out as a clumsy way of mucking things up for Jake was Leila walking in on him and Stella, post their supposidly last sexual encounter.

At what point would he have given her a key to the flat? Why would she need one? And given that he and Stella were regularly having sex there, why on earth would he take the risk that she might walk in on them; very silly bit of sub plotting.

Having said that, I did enjoy it as a bit of 'not having to think' entertainment and would probably watch any further epitsodes.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/03/2020 14:25

Too many dramas these days don't end in a satisfactory manner because the writers are hoping for a second series to be commissioned. This is clearly one such scenario.

TitsInAbsentia · 01/03/2020 14:40

Agreed...my DH refuses to watch anything like this now due to previous dramas dripping over too many episodes and ending with some ridiculous "ooh can we have season 2"!

The80sweregreat · 01/03/2020 15:28

What would another season do though? Mark would come after Mary , but if he were in a wheelchair then he'd have to hire someone else to do it.
Could be a bit more mileage from the pregnant daughter and her lover.
Other than that I think it would be more of the same. Vivian might find out Mary tried to kill him then go after her herself maybe?
There are possibilities I suppose.

SapatSea · 01/03/2020 15:43

It could be a double play. Perhaps Mark targetted Viv as a rich widow but perhaps Vivien is hard up (apart from the beach house). Perhaps the shares her husband left her have performed badly and she in turn targeted Mark, a rich retired Surgeon. Mark could be lying about his background like the "surgeon" in Dear John and like "John" have a drug habit. However, you would think that the eldest daughter who runs 3 NHS trusts could find out a bit of background about a surgeon rather than a quick google of a webpage.

Viv seemed low and depressed at the end but gave Mary a very hard stare across the dining table, what did anyone make of that? Does she suspect Mary of foul play, now that Mary is taking care of all her family again and Viv herself as queen pin?

Big plot flaw as others have pointed out to have Leila able to just walk into the flat. I did wonder if Stella had deliberately gone onto the balcony in Jake's shirt in the hopes of being spotted as she didn't want to lose Jake. Before that I thought Jake would get back with Leila but find he was desperately missing Stella.

Loved the shot of the "ditherer", replacement sexy blonde PA and driver to Nats man.

I liked the jaunty music. Imelda Staunton is great even with poor material. She conveyed such emotion when talking with Viv about losing her baby. Francesa Annis has always been beautiful but her figure is incredible for a woman in their 70's, she must have a will of iron.

Inkanta · 02/03/2020 12:05

I must say, I really enjoyed this! Binge watched it all yesterday.

Can't see how they can do a 2nd series though.

SapatSea · 02/03/2020 15:06

I think there is a lot of scope for second series, Mark has opened his eyes so what does he remember, will eldest daughter get a handle on her drinking/reunite with drippy George, will she resign and/or take revenge on her "stalker"/lady she sacked. Is Nats pregnant. Will Jake descend into an alcoholic/gambling pit of despair, will Stella pull him out? Then there are Mary and Viv, what lengths will mary go to to keep Viv and family close and thwart Mark, who is Viv really and what is she up to? Lots of possible storylines for mischief.

However, can they get the "stellar" cast all together again?

I enjoyed it, really nice change from nasty murder/police dramas and dramatizing RL crimes.

stumbledin · 02/03/2020 23:52

Earlier on in this thread I suggested that series 2 could be told from the view point of the dodgy surgeon's daughter who has been found and is on her way.

If I was her I would wonder what had happened to her dad.

they will have long conversations with him only being able to blink yes or no, and she will visit each of the self absorbed spoilt family, and Mary will take her under her wing - to mislead her.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/03/2020 07:38

Def scope for s2

And sure our ideas will be noted 😂😂

Yes to Mark's daughter going all Colombo and discovering the truth! She'll get them in a room and round on Mary!

Knittingnanny · 03/03/2020 17:00

Stumbled in, that’s a good storyline. Maybe you should email them and offer a plot!

Knittingnanny · 03/03/2020 17:01

Hope it’s not going to take 2 1/2 years to make like “ the Liar”

Cherrypie32 · 03/03/2020 17:40

OMG, just finished ep4 in bed last night and was looking forward to ep5 tonight until I realise from this thread there isn’t one! Ridiculous. No actual ending other than ‘come back next year for series 2’

stumbledin · 03/03/2020 18:22

Knittingnanny Blush - well it was more how they structured this series.

ie each episode would focus on one member of the family - she could even question the police, and that nice young side kick could extend his range of facial expressions and meaningful looks.

And we wouldn't be distracted by Stephen Rea's hair - we would just see his eyes!!

Knittingnanny · 04/03/2020 00:02

Good plan!

CoraPirbright · 04/03/2020 17:16

So glad I’m not the only one wondering why on Earth they cast Stephen Rea opposite the luminous Francesca Annis. He has a face like a chewed toffee and the character had zero charisma, charm or anything like eg humour that would make you understand why she chose him. The rest was enjoyable but Imelda Staunton was in another class altogether!

The80sweregreat · 04/03/2020 17:59

The Mary character was good. She is a fab actress.
I'm glad someone else thought that Vivian wouldn't fall for Mark at all! He seemed a bit awkward and not very dynamic. I have a vision of a surgeon being both but I've not met many myself ( thankfully) so it's just my idea of how they would be.
Still she did love him a lot and I did feel sorry for her at the end.

TitsInAbsentia · 04/03/2020 18:52

Imelda Staunton in the silk robe 😂😂😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/03/2020 19:30

How did she get the gravy off? It wasn't stained when Viv was wearing it.

CoolCarrie · 04/03/2020 19:35

She changed the ribbon trim Captain

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/03/2020 20:08

Ah, I missed that.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2020 20:19

Wonder if mark noticed the change or was it same colour

OP posts:
CaptainMyCaptain · 04/03/2020 20:33

I think it would be quite difficult to change the ribbon trim without it showing. For one thing the unpicking would show and she only had a normal sewing machine not an overlocker/covers titch.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/03/2020 20:34

Coverstitch.

Figgygal · 04/03/2020 22:10

Watched all 4 of them today.
Obviously Imelda Staunton was going to do something awful otherwise what was the point of casting her just to be the creepy overinvolved neighbour.

Why was Viv giving her the bad eye at the end?
I want that house what an amazing place to live
