I lived with my 2 best friends when This Life was originally on. It was like a religion in our house. Bloody loved it!

Letseatgrandma · 06/02/2020 09:53

Why are they all crammed into that one living-room/kitchen, at the front of the house?

When I house shared at university-all the houses near us used the dining room as a fourth bedroom.

How they coped all working with only one toilet/shower though, I don’t know!!

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 06/02/2020 10:00

They all seem to go upstairs to bed, though, Letseatgrandma!

And it doesn't explain why the kitchen is in the front room!

Oopsinamechangedagain2020 · 06/02/2020 10:31

What's with that curtain that's hanging up in the hallway to the left of the stairs?

Oopsinamechangedagain2020 · 06/02/2020 10:32

At the end of season 2 there was an ad in the paper saying the house was up for a rent and the rent seemed way too cheap even for 1996. I remember me and my mum commenting on it. Can't believe I watched it with my mum when I was 13/14. I must have been cringing at all the sex and sex references. 😂

feellikeanalien · 06/02/2020 10:46

Like other pps I don't know whether I should watch this again but I probably will. It was one of my favourite programmes at the time

It took me quite a few episodes of the Walking Dead to stop thinking of Andrew Lincoln as Egg. When I mentioned this to DP he looked at me blankly.

Also agree that Millie was a pain and I never understood why she and Egg were together. I thought she was much more suited to the boss who she had an affair with.

I'm not sure whether it would be lovely or depressing to watch it but I suppose I'll have to give it a goGrin.

Oopsinamechangedagain2020 · 06/02/2020 11:25

I think Millie and Egg were a case of 'opposites attract'. I quite like Millie though I do agree she is annoying. But Egg is also annoying with his head in the clouds!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/02/2020 11:35

How they coped all working with only one toilet/shower though, I don’t know!!

The fact Anna is seen sniffing her tights for a second wear probably suggests she isn't a daily showerer😉

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/02/2020 11:36

I shared a house with 3 others and only one loo and bathroom, I don't remember it being an issue tbh. The loo was separate which helped.

A house of 5 with no separate loo is pretty different though.

I’ve lived in 4 London flat shares with mates/boyfriend when I was young and in all of them the toilet was separate to the bathroom. I don’t how you’d cope otherwise. I never really thought about it when watched it 24 years ago but it is strange that the house seems massive from the outside but there is only the one reception room. We only ever lived in flats rather than a whole house and still seemed to have more room than them!

Milly used to irritate me too but now watching I find Egg a total immature twat and I don’t know how Milly puts up with him. I always thought Anna seemed much older than the others and I still think that now. Also don’t really understand how Milly and Miles are already in jobs but Egg, Anna and Warren have only just started working. But if they were all at uni together how come?

I used to really fancy Joe when I was younger and always wished he was in it more!

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 06/02/2020 12:20

Oops...2020- I spotted that curtain last night aswell - and wondered what could be lurking behind it Hmm

ceeveebee · 06/02/2020 12:27

I loved This Life and have binge watched the first 3 episodes - I don’t think it’s dated that badly at all except the lack of phones seems strange now, and all the smoking! The music feels like it was yesterday not 25 years ago..but maybe I have also dated badly and not noticing it!

Maybe they don’t have the whole house, there are lot of maisonettes in London ie house split into 2, I lived in one in Kilburn in the late 90s too.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 06/02/2020 12:48

Delilah had a mobile phone though, didn't she?

Goodness knows how she afforded it - mobile calls (in 1996) used to cost a squillion pounds per second, if I'm remembering rightly!

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 06/02/2020 12:51

Mind you, I don't think we ever saw her make a call from it - people rang her instead.

Loved it when Anna rang her to complain about the noisy sex Grin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/02/2020 13:20

I don't think it was the whole house. The garden flat would have been separate.

Thinking about DH's place, it had a very similar feel, cold! (I think their house looks cold too), very clattery acoustics. Ancient flea bitten furniture as IKEA was yet to arrive. People were not daily showerers, the bathrooms in those places were grim, as were the kitchens. It looks very authentic to me!

fedup21 · 06/02/2020 13:26

The high up kitchen window makes it look a bit like a basement flat.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/02/2020 13:26

I think it’s a 3 bed house and dining room is a bedroom making 4

And yes why/how did milly and miles end up in jobs for ages

And egg and warren and Anna new

But all went to uni together

And yes looking back as now a mature 46yr old 😂 egg is immature

Should have got a job before quitting firm

And milly a saint to put up with him. Always bailing him out wi eh money /paying his share

Rollergirl11 · 06/02/2020 13:42

There’s no communal entrance though, the front door opens directly in to their hallway doesn’t it?

Yeah the smoking is weird. Even smoking in the offices!! 😱🤮

Rollergirl11 · 06/02/2020 13:45

It’s strange how smoking was so integral back then. God, I remember going out clubbing and everyone would be smoking and you’d come back absolutely reeking of cigarettes, in your clothes and hair! Ugh, absolutely disgusting.

ritzbiscuits · 06/02/2020 13:46

Just saved on iPlayer - thanks!

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 06/02/2020 13:57

I don't find the smoking weird, Rollergirl! It's perfectly normal, and is just 'how it was'.

I kind of miss those days - pubs, especially, just aren't the same fun places these days ☹

Rollergirl11 · 06/02/2020 14:07

@wheresthatcat I didn’t find it weird back then but looking back now I think it’s pretty grim.

fedup21 · 06/02/2020 15:00

Absolutely! And if I go out now, everywhere smells of BO on sweaty men instead. I preferred the smoke!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/02/2020 15:56

The smoking was just how it was. You had to air your coat out if you went to the pub the night before Grin
