That reveal! 😳
Took me ages to figure out what was going on.

@Supersimkin2 Nobody called her Mrs Barton? She referred to herself as Ada Gordon, which is correct as that was her maiden name.

They didn’t make him out to be a git who snaffled her work, I didn’t think? When they mentioned his private notes they in no way implied those were the calculations, it was a sketch book.

I wonder if the timeless child seems familiar because of previous references to the nightmare child?

So good, can't wait for next week!

I wonder if the white things were actually cybermen hiding in another dimension, going to have to listen again to exactly what Lenny Henry said.

Agree it was classic Who and really enjoyable and Lenny Henry and Sasha Dhawan were fab. Looking forward to a story arch, and seeing old villians again.

I enjoyed it a lot more than any of the previous series, so I'm hopeful that this is a return to some of the great storylines from the David Tennant era. I wonder if it was because there was much more focus on the Doctor working out and solving problems and less on the companions? I have to say that Ryan and Graham aren't really doing it for me and I'd be happy if they decided to stay at home and work on their relationship. Yaz and the Doctor can manage on their own!

What I mean by the timeless child is are they going to make an old character return that is the timeless child or is it going to be a new character altogether.

I really hope the white creatures are not cybermen. That would just be rehashing an old storyline. I've had enough of daleks and cybermen. Looking forward to new aliens.

Report
EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 06/01/2020 14:37

I don't think they were Cybermen. The one that was trapped inside the forcefield said that they had taken on a human shape in order to mock humanity, whereas the Cybermen are pretty much just human brains inside a man-shaped robot. They don't have an alternative shape, iyswim.

Having said that, the alien thingies did just seem to disappear once they realised that the Master was using them. Why would they do that if they wanted to take over the universe and turn everyone into a data store? They weren't very tenacious about their megalomania, were they?

Isn't the doctor the timeless child, a Peter Pan figure running away from home?

That would make sense but I feel like there will be more of a shocking twist. And wasnt there the whole hybrid tale from gallifrey and it turned out to be the doctor anyway. So I dont know if they'd do the whole mystery thing again and it just turns out to be the doctor iyswim

decades of Who her. Ever since Matt Smith the plotlines have been pretty forgettable.

The current companions are DIRE - I thought no-one could be worse than Bill Potts (wossat, Doctor?) for lack of character but these three are dreadful. Not helped as Cole cannot act, even more wooden than Mackie, and the other two aren't a lot better.

Whittaker is good and the fact that the doctor is female just isn't an issue - but these two episodes have been pretty dull with just the odd flash of interest. Nowhere near enough plot to fill the time and those stupid chases....

And a female character called Ada near the difference engine? Least original idea ever.

sticking with it because it is Who, but it is really dire.

@EoinMcLovesCakeJumper - their original plan was just to gather data in case they needed it - it was the Master who convinced them to change it to conquest, so once they realised he was intending to betray them they withdrew, having taken him prisoner. Whether they will ever return is another matter...

RustyBear · 06/01/2020 19:08

So when Graham said 'Are we being replaced?' How many people said 'God, I hope so...'

Report
RustyBear · 06/01/2020 19:11

Actually, looking at it again, the Kasaavians didn't just withdraw, the Doctor rigged the Silver Lady to exile them to their home dimension.
So they didn't have any choice.

Am I the only one who really likes Graham? I'd be happy with just him. I find yaz and ryan a bit wet and boring

Report
EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 06/01/2020 20:51

I find Graham somewhat irritating but think any of the companions would be better on their own than as a gang of three. Yaz would be my preference but Graham would still be better than Ryan.

I don't love Graham but I agree I just think 3 is too many, there's no chance to develop their characters and have a decent stories so you get one or the other.

I like Yaz the most plus one of the guys as an occasional companion. Or just rotate them and not have them all every episode...

I really loved the Master and am intrigued about the Gallifrey plot.

I’m liking this season better than the last one. I think without an real series plot it was just a bunch of stories, some good like Rosa but lots of them totally forgettable.

I find Ryan quite boring, Graham is ok but i just find Bradley Walsh irritating. I quite like Yaz but don’t feel like we know her half as well as previous companions, probably because there’s 3 of them. I think they’ve consciously moved away from the “super special companion” route like the impossible girl, but that shouldn’t mean we get forgettable companions instead!

Grace would’ve made a fab companion! I knew she was going to die in The Woman Who Fell to Earth because she hadn’t been billed as a companion but she was loving it so much, there had to be a huge reason that graham went off with the doctor and grace didn’t. I reckon Grace and the thirteenth doctor would’ve been brilliant!

I like Jodie Whitaker, I’m looking forward to her having a bit more emotional range than she had chance to show last series.

I like Graham. I love Yaz. I find Ryan very dull and the constant harping on about dyspraxia very pointless.

Just watched the first 2 episodes, and I'll say I was pleasantly surprised. Much better than the last season already IMO, but I still feel it's being held back by the companions. I can enjoy Yaz and Graham individually but as a team, especially with Ryan, I don't rate them at all. If they can fix that, and come up with some better premises and villains, I think this series could be back to prime Doctor Who.

I occasionally like to rewatch previous episodes. Turn Left, with the incredible Catherine Tate. What a fantastic episode, and those following! If the current series can match up to that, it would be fantastic!

I love turn left. Catherine Tate is one of my fav companions. I love series 4. Cried like a baby when the dr erased her memory!

I've just watched that Sad

Some episodes are just beyond anything, beyond the criticism of time. They get better every time you watch them. Will they ever get that magic back?

Screenrant on The Timeless Child]], it was mentioned briefly last series by the Remnants! I'd forgotten.

so no mention of the timeless child this week - apart from a slightly miserable Doctor it's like last week never happened.
And why were there bloody trees on the planet?

Thumbs down from me for that episode.

HeyAssbutt · 12/01/2020 21:01

I dont think the timeless child will be mentioned again for a couple of weeks.

Tonight's wasn't amazing but I did like the old fashioned monster and running away. I saw some chatter about how the end was going to be amazing. And all it was was "look after the planet or your descendants will turn into monsters". Meh.

Looking forward to next week though. Love Goran Visnjic.

this week's episode was utter pants imo. anyone care to offset a contrasting opinion?
