That reveal! 😳
Took me ages to figure out what was going on.

Also The Doctor comes from another planet ( not Gallifrey) where people can regenerate, but let's just ignore that enormous bit of information Hmm

SurpriseSparDay · 02/03/2020 10:18

Such a mixture of brilliant and disappointing. At the end of the penultimate episode I was desperate to know more about Brendan - the resolution of that strand just seems so unsatisfactory when the characters and world were so compelling.

Agree that Sacha Dhawan is so explosively watchable the Doctor pales in comparison. But their encounters were so dragged out.

And it seemed a shame the finale relied on people only introduced last week, though I’ve seen speculation they may morph into new regular companions.

The ending was fun, though! (Brought huge nostalgia for River Song.)

RustyBear · 02/03/2020 11:24

I think the whole Brendan and 'The Division' thing is going to be an ongoing story-arc for Season 13.
I did enjoy last night's episode, and didn't find it too complicated. I'm still liking this Doctor most of the time, even though I do often find myself thinking of how a different Doctor would have delivered the same lines.

I liked the fact that it's finally explained the mind-bending scenes in The Brain of Morbius. I wonder how long before there's an itemised list of that memory sequence online?

QuiQuaiQuod · 02/03/2020 19:18

I have to say I’m not keen on all the bbc box ticking either. It just seems to be all about signalling various ishooos and all I need for Dr Woke bingo is for a cyberman to be self ID as a cyberwoman.

Surprised they haven't! NOW WTF have they done with the Brain of Morbius mind thing? Why cant they leave well alone?

The Doctor is supposed to be a mystery, hence ''WHO''.

RustyBear · 02/03/2020 19:59

To be fair, the original brief for Doctor Who was that it should be educational as well as entertaining. You might like to read some of the TARDIS Eruditorium essays to look at some of the issues the earlier series dealt with.

Gutted beyond all consolation.

I really have tried to like her, but Whittaker is a blank, dull cardboard cutout. And how the hell did River become who she is if regenerations were genetically added to the original inhabitants of Gallifrey to make Timelords?

I mean, I can usually forgive the really silly stuff because it's always been part of the ride, but it's so badly done. And the Doctor either looks a bit bored, or smiles like a new trainee in their first job.

FloralBunting · 02/03/2020 20:05

And Morbius?? Really? When the ratings are in the toilet, do we really think filling in vague and massively fannish questions that the majority of the current viewers wouldn't have the slightest clue about is the saving grace?

SurpriseSparDay · 02/03/2020 20:13

Must admit I have sometimes superimposed Matt Smith’s face or David Tennant’s voice onto Jodie Whittaker over the last season.

And can you imagine Christopher Ecclestone being told his whole history was a lie, and finding himself obliged to wipe out all organic matter on Gallifrey? Just the hurt in his eyes would have melted the super-cybermen to little puddles of nothing.

FloralBunting · 02/03/2020 20:31

Surprise, you're so right. I've really been trying to be positive about Whittaker, and yes, I do agree that the writing is the basic problem, but all the modern Doctors have had a few shovel fulls of crap material to work with along the way and still managed to make something out of it.
She can just about handle a happy-go-lucky thing, but she's got no edge, no depth, nothing about her to inspire loyalty or convince that she's the cleverest person in the room underneath a fluffy exterior.

Basically, she ain't no bleedin' good.

SurpriseSparDay · 02/03/2020 21:26

edge is definitely the thing that’s lacking.

CE was furious and broken hearted. DT was fizzing with energy and wit to disguise great galaxies of loneliness. MS was just so bravely, incomparably sad. All on the edge of madness. JW’s Doctor is just too superficial - and I never believe her brain is so enormous it’s torturing her head.

I really hate not loving her.

SurpriseSparDay · 02/03/2020 21:27

Keep forgetting PC. Far from my favourite but he would have brought a certain majesty to the finale.

RustyBear · 03/03/2020 00:05

@FloralBunting - I never said it was a 'saving grace', I just said I liked the fact that the question had been addressed. Just because you don't remember or aren't interested in such things doesn't mean I can't comment on them.

FloralBunting · 03/03/2020 00:25

Rusty, wasn't having a go at you, and I remember Morbius. Didn't say you couldn't comment on it either. Just think it's a hell of a reach of Chibnall to do something so enormous with the show on the strength of something so relatively obscure.

SoupDragon · 03/03/2020 07:20

I haven't a clue what Morbius is and it hasn't affected my enjoyment of the storyline.

Last series I was willing to blame poor writing for the disappointing doctor. Having see The Master and Ruth in this series, I've changed my mind. It's a shame.

SurpriseSparDay · 05/03/2020 15:52

Thanks, Rusty! Interesting news ...

FloralBinting · 05/03/2020 16:41

Shame about Walsh. Added some real class to shonky proceedings.

SoupDragon · 05/03/2020 17:24

Thank goodness for that! I've loathed Bradley in this.

thegirlwhowaited · 05/03/2020 17:31

Bradley made it watchable for me.

Ah well.

SoupDragon · 05/03/2020 17:40

It's really interesting how Bradley is so marmite in this.

FloralBinting · 05/03/2020 17:44

It is actually. Mind you, saying I thought he was one of the best things about it isn't really much, given that he didn't have much to do. He's got a light touch with some of the lines he could pick humour out of, and what depth there was, he did his best with.

Less companions, and more time to round out character might help going forward, but I can't say I'm feeling hopeful.

thecatsthecats · 06/03/2020 11:54

What I don't get is how monumentally the writers have squandered their opportunity to tell stories based around Gallifrey.

The long arc of Gallifrey being destroyed and the Doctor's guilt was brilliant. The 50th anniversary episode, ending with that spine chilling line up of all the Doctors, and that tiny glimpse of Peter Capaldi.

Matt Smith saying he was heading to look for Gallifrey. Then... nothing.

No grand moment when he's finally reunited with them. That story was alllllll about fucking Clara. No stories about the Doctor interacting with Gallifrey, Gallifrey helping or hindering his actions, other timelords being involved with stories.

Instead he visits once, is pissed off, then next we hear the Master has destroyed it again?

What a bloody waste.

iklboo · 06/03/2020 12:10

Apparently Bradley has quit because he's just been cast as Pa Larkin in a Darling Buds Of May remake.

SomethingPunny · 06/03/2020 12:25

I recently rewatched The Darling Buds of May and it was "perfick". It really doesn't need a remake, especially with Bradley Walsh as Pa. I like him, but he's no David Jason!

Noodlenosefraggle · 07/03/2020 18:46

I agree we don't need a new Darling Buds of May. I think it was one of those shows where the original cast 'are' the show. It will be like when I saw Little Women and Saul Goodman was the dad. Totally pulled me out of the whole film! Back to Doctor Who though, he does a ton of other stuff. I was surprised he did 2 series. I wonder if they will get another companion nor have a female only tardis team. I dont think they have had a male only Tardis team that I can remember.
