Old thread

Ten points to DarlingNikita who spotted my deliberate mistake - I meant, of course, "cutting the judges' comments to make it LOOK as though they are sending home the wrong people." Ahem.

How can Rosie be in trouble?! She just won the Technical!

Not that that’s protection is suppose, look at goth girl.

ilovetofu · 08/10/2019 21:13

Aw I like Michael too. So sweet.

jay55 · 08/10/2019 21:13

Happy with both decisions this week and pie next week, things are on the up.

SanFranBear · 08/10/2019 21:16

PIES ♡

And the showstopper was definitely baking.. amazing stuff! Not something I'll be knocking out any time soon though Grin

OkayGo · 08/10/2019 21:19

Yay for pies!!

It was definitely Michael's time to go

NumbersStation · 09/10/2019 01:52

Mmmmm Pies...

@SchadenfreudePersonified

I was nearly there about eggs...

Eggy rubber is the smell and consistency of my flesh after 'baking' in a stranger's guffs for two hours.

I bet PH would give the guffer a handshake just to spite me...

Bouledeneige · 09/10/2019 01:59

I was very sad to see Michael go. He's absolutely lovely. But then I think a lot of them are. My favourite thing about the show is how much they all support each other - did you see them last week all hugging on chairs out in the gardens? Lovely. I particularly like Henry, David and Michael.

NumbersStation · 09/10/2019 02:11

It was a shame to see Michael go but I think it was the right decision.

Alice's eyes remind me on Kaa's eyes - out of the Jungle Book.

Something strangely intense about them.

Henry blurting "Shut up!" at the Hollywood Handshake Grin

I love the Least Laddy Lads Club (and their tendency to cuddle each other - when you see them out in the garden Henry's head always seems to be on David's shoulder). I'll miss Michael and his constant flapping, although I think he was right, it's his time to go.

ppeatfruit · 09/10/2019 08:36

Yes they really do seem to get on well with one another, it's sweet.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/10/2019 08:41

We missed the buns but really enjoyed the layered cake. I'm sure I've seen something very similar on 'The Professionals' and didn't Sue do a trip to someone in Europe in an old series when they did a layered cake? Fell a bit more in love with Henry this week.

Igneococcus · 09/10/2019 09:09

Sue went to Germany to a baker who made Baumkuchen Disfordarkchocolate which is a lot more delicious than it looks.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/10/2019 09:17

Our local pub used to have a Hungarian chef who made a very similar cake Igneococcus, my husband loved it.

Igneococcus · 09/10/2019 09:58

Looking at the wiki page it's even poplar in Japan, called "bāmukūhen".
I'm going to Germany tomorrow, might have a look if I find some although I already have a lot of stuff to bring back, thankfully Lufthansa doesn't (or so far never has) weigh carry on luggage.

ppeatfruit · 09/10/2019 10:41

Odd that Channel 4 doesn't do those 'history' VTs any more, I enjoyed them, too expensive I suppose. We have to make do with Prue and Paul pontificating instead !! Hmm

thecatsthecats · 09/10/2019 11:11

They do do them. They just put them in the later episodes, when there are fewer bakers to concentrate on.

ppeatfruit · 09/10/2019 12:18

Oh thanks thecats I must have missed them. Grin

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 09/10/2019 14:10

Thrilled Henry won Star Baker, and loved the 'shut up' bit. I don't think Prue was too happy at it though, but PH took it in jest.

Was definitely Michaels turn to go I think - he'd sort of been hovering around the bottom end for a couple of weeks. Which week did he win SB? Was it the first (cake) week?

I'm getting a bit tired of the elaborate bakes now - having watched the series from the beginning (now rewatching s5 again) I just think some of the old bakes were just as good, if not better. I suppose they run out of things to bake so not to repeat a challenge but really, it just gets a bit more flamboyant each year when I just want to see scones and bread and cake Grin makes the whole thing seem a bit more relatable.

ppeatfruit · 10/10/2019 10:30

Yes Niges those Indonesian cakes were ridiculous there's no way I would even entertain the THOUGHT of grilling one of those !! Grin I liked the rest of the programme . There's no reason why they couldn't repeat some of the earlier ones.

ppeatfruit · 10/10/2019 10:33

Show stoppers I meant!

jay55 · 10/10/2019 11:14

I want them to repeat challenges, or close variation of, to be able to compare contestants across seasons.
I want to see hot water crusts and silly things from choux and biscuit creations (though never again a chandelier) and bread animals.

DarlingNikita · 10/10/2019 12:25

I thought the showstopper was more like a technical in that they basically all had to make the same thing. There wasn't as much scope as usual for creativity.

I loved Steff's though; so retro.

LemonRedwood · 10/10/2019 12:56

I'm sure they did grilled cakes as a technical a few years ago

FreeBedForFlys · 10/10/2019 13:07

I still can’t decide if I like it.

I loved Mel and Sue. I like Noel more than I thought I would; I was initially worried that he’d try too hard to be wacky and end up overshadowing the contestants but he’s lovely with them. I like how upset Sandi gets when it’s kicking off time. I don’t think their “amusing” bantery filler bits work at all - I just sit cringing.

Ultimately, I still watch it but not avidly. I’m usually dickering on my phone at the same time. Whereas I still watch repeats of old series.

DarlingNikita · 10/10/2019 13:29

Lemon, did they do Baumkuchen? As someone says above, the 'educational bit' was abut a bakery that made it, and I seem to remember it was a kind of introduction to it before the bakers tackled it.
