Old thread

Ten points to DarlingNikita who spotted my deliberate mistake - I meant, of course, "cutting the judges' comments to make it LOOK as though they are sending home the wrong people." Ahem.

I should think they were, even standing too close can lead to comments or physical assault.

This sums it up fairly well

He received little praise from PH throughout the series

OR he received plenty of praise from PH throughout the series but because he was never star baker they record a lot of it out so that they could really sell the "plucky underdog" narrative in the final.

You can never trust the editing on these. To begin with, contestants going all the way back to the first couple of series have consistently said that the judges' comments are far longer and more detailed on the day than is shown in the televised version. So they are always edited, and I suspect that increasingly they are edited to give a distorted view and affect how the public perceive the course of the competition.

Sorry why was Tom so nice about Steff and said the weird shite about Alice?

VetOnCall · 01/11/2019 22:31

VetOnCall how on earth do you remember all those details about who did what?

Ginfordinner I have a ridiculous memory, and I've re-watched all the previous seasons on Netflix this year 😄

impostersyndrome · 02/11/2019 07:28

noeuf exactly my thoughts! I find him mostly funny when he talks about the programme, but he can be really nasty with his weird shouty sarcasm thing. You could see the disappointment on her face as he didn’t find a single nice thing to say about her. The fact that she was juggling teaching with practicing bakes was one easy bit of praise that somehow got forgotten. And I’m sure there’s tons more he could have said.

highheelsandweathercocks · 02/11/2019 07:49

I only started watching GBBO the year it moved to C4 after putting caramel week on by chance. That was enough to make me restart that whole season. This morning I've found the first 7 seasons on Netflix.
I have tried to watch the odd Mary/Mel/Sue one before but I'm not a huge fan of Mel&Sue so have never stuck with it. Prue/Sandi/Noel were game changers for me.

That said, I'm going to start from the very beginning and hope that they ease me into it as watching part of the first one this morning, there's none of the double entendres of later seasons.

Also noted is the distinct lack of make up and glam around Mary Berry. Obviously not anticipating it taking off in the way it did.

Thanks for the link to that article, SimonJT.

Been there myself, so know exactly how it feels 🙁

Sorry why was Tom so nice about Steff and said the weird shite about Alice?

He'd been obsessed with Alice and her "shady cover story" in the first few weeks of this season; it would have been weird if he hadn't alluded to it when he eventually had her right there (if she'd gone out in week 4 or 5 it would have flowed more naturally, though).

Yes, I recall now that he’s been being silly about her other interests etc since the early days. Though it was still downright mean, obsession or not, to not say something nice about her.

Peaseblossom22 · 02/11/2019 18:50

I think there must be a back story with Steph, in the VT her mother referred to her coming home to decide what to do with her life, her family all seemed super anxious for her to succeed and everyone on the show seemed to be super careful about not upsetting her . She did come across as very needy , even on Extra Slice and in the letter which she wrote which was published on Twitter , but obviously it could all be in the editing

ItalianinLondon · 12/12/2019 16:29

So Steph did have an eating disorder... I was wondering all the way through and I thought I just had an overactive imagination!!
