Old thread

Ten points to DarlingNikita who spotted my deliberate mistake - I meant, of course, "cutting the judges' comments to make it LOOK as though they are sending home the wrong people." Ahem.

Thanks for linking to that article. Henry sounds absolutely lovely! The spirit of Bake Off really comes across in his writing

jay55 · 31/10/2019 08:42

Lovely article. Henry does make Alice and David sound much lovelier and more approachable than they came across in the tent. Which mirrors their social media.
I'll never quite understand tv editing on these sort of shows, especially when there is no public vote to manipulate.

Pashazade · 31/10/2019 08:53

Make sure you watch Extra Slice on Friday, I went to the filming on Tuesday and it was a much more rounded impression of the final three, although of course that all depends on the edit!

thecatsthecats · 31/10/2019 09:07

Wow, he's a great writer.

And I absolutely want to see Sandi and Noel running around parliament.

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 31/10/2019 09:22

Didn't think I could love Henry anymore but here we are...Grin

VetOnCall · 31/10/2019 09:25

I'm really pleased David won, it was absolutely deserved imo. I had him down as the winner from about halfway through the series - I won £40 in the annual Bake Off pick the winner competition my friends and I have Grin He was cool, calm, collected and consistent. I did feel for Steph though, it just all went wrong for her at the end.

Regarding the bakes though, I did think that both chocolate cakes and 'disguise' cakes had been done even better in previous seasons though - Howard's black forest bear cake, Robert's raspberry chocolate cake, Steven's BLT sandwich disguise cake, Liam's amazing pancake stack and Flo's watermelon to name just a few. Steven was definitely robbed in his season, I'm still pissed off about that 😄

Totally agree.

I’m afraid tv editing can be depressingly superficial- they want to play to an audience which wants simplistic soundbites, eg Alice = capable Head Girl, Steff = brittle flaky etc

And of course some people lap all this up.

I always thought David had a lot more about him than came across - there were brief mentions of his wonderful nursing work, including doing training in third world countries, but overall the editing definitely favoured some contestants over others. I’m glad he was ultimately recognised as the best baker in terms of knowledge and execution- not just when making something he’d had hours to prepare but also in the technical challenges. Although of course I doubt he has hours to plan and practise anyway, as he clearly has a busy life, same with Henry; reading about him popping down to London regularly from Durham where he’s studying really brought across how Bake off should be- about really passionate, good bakers who do it for enjoyment.

DarlingNikita · 31/10/2019 10:42

wowfudge, in your opinion, sure, which is worth exactly as much/little as mine.

Acciocats · 31/10/2019 11:07

Sandi and Noel running around parliament - yessss!

awaynboilyurheid · 31/10/2019 15:56

Late to view as I was away , so glad David won !, really think Paul didn’t like him and that’s why he never got star baker but he had to give in at the final as he was so good .
Felt really sorry for Steph as she could have won on a better day but they all did so well .
Alice’s parents did not come over well with their good management talk, was a bit like the old, must keep a stiff upper lip kind of thing which may be the reason she lacks confidence in herself at times and then they showed poor management when they nearly didn’t get back in time, should have applied better management to factor in plane delays really shouldn’t they!
Think the judges could have been kinder all series They are both a bit cutting at times.

Ginfordinner · 31/10/2019 17:41

VetOnCall how on earth do you remember all those details about who did what?

CakeNinja · 31/10/2019 18:27

@Ginfordinner - presumably the same way my DP can remember who scored how many goals in the 1993 champions league finals Grin - because it’s memorable (to the individual of course, I have no idea who scored a goal yesterday!)!

Elodie2019 · 31/10/2019 20:08

I'm so pleased David won!
He's just lovely and just gets on with it. No fuss.
He received little praise from PH throughout the series Angry

I don't understand the love for Henry. Or Michael. Both attention seekers imho.
Henry with his annoying little ways always looking for a reaction (from someone/anyone) directly after doing something 'quirky'. I couldn't stand to watch him.
Michael - just everywhere (photos at the end of the show!) Didn't warm to him. Too much.

MrsGrindah · 31/10/2019 20:09

I loved David..so poised , killer bone structure and his diction and accent reminded me of Tan from Queer Eye.

Elodie2019 · 31/10/2019 20:09

away I also got the impression that Paul didn't like David. Really annoying to watch many episodes this season.

Elodie2019 · 31/10/2019 20:10

MrsGrindah Nice bum too.

SimonJT · 31/10/2019 20:11

Beautiful! Grin

Elodie2019 · 31/10/2019 20:14

I'm rewatching now. I loved seeing David's gorgeous Mum and Dad too. Oh I love gentle people ❤️

MrsGrindah · 31/10/2019 20:16

Elodie2019 I thought you meant I had a nice bum there for a minute

SimonJT · 31/10/2019 20:21

MrsGrindah Grin

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 01/11/2019 11:19

That's a joyous picture, SimonJT! Love it.

I did notice there was a little hesitation as they were going in for that kiss, though, in the actual programme.

Almost as if they were both wondering, "are we allowed to kiss on camera/in public?"

I hope they weren't thinking that, I really do!

It's the 21st century, after all - surely nobody is going to have a fit of the vapours seeing two men sharing a kiss Grin

Best wishes to them both, they look a great couple.

Elodie2019, yes! Love gentle people. Wish there were more in the world Smile

thecatsthecats · 01/11/2019 11:24

I hope they weren't thinking that, I really do!

I noticed it to, and had a really sad moment, as it reminded me of when I finally noticed that none of my gay friends do any remote form of PDA.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 01/11/2019 11:54

Yes, thecatsthecats, that's exactly what I mean.

Made me sad too, that they would even have to consider whether it was OK to show their affection for each other.
