Old thread

Ten points to DarlingNikita who spotted my deliberate mistake - I meant, of course, "cutting the judges' comments to make it LOOK as though they are sending home the wrong people." Ahem.

@jay55 I agree - I would far rather see repeat challenges to compare and contrast baking skills. At the moment it just seems to be who can wing it the best when it comes to elaborate shit

I think the point of the technicals, though, is that if the bakers have a strong technical knowledge of baking techniques, they can apply it to fill in the gaps in the recipes. i.e. if they know how heat/raising agent/binding agent works in a range of different bakes, they can extrapolate what's most important in making this unfamiliar recipe work.

DarlingNikita · 10/10/2019 16:58

CmdrCressidaDuck, yes, sure. But I do think the grilled cake was more like a technical for the reason stated: that the results were basically all the same barring colour and decoration variation (actually come to think of it, the decoration was quite samey, maybe because everyone had looked up the same images of 'kek Sarawak'.

LemonRedwood · 10/10/2019 19:11

DarlingNikita Quite possible although I'm sure I remember one that was stacked up like pancakes and not very tree-ringy like baumkuchen is. Maybe I'm morphing technicals! Have they done stacked pancake cakes too, or is that just from Tasty on Pinterest? 😂

DarlingNikita · 10/10/2019 19:18

I have to admit I don't remember...!

VetOnCall · 10/10/2019 23:08

They did Schichttorte - grilled layered cakes - as a technical in season 5. The one that Nancy won, with with Richard the builder, Luis, Kate and Chetna etc. They had to alternate light and dark layers, 20 in total, Paul counted them. I have watched way too much Bake Off on Netflix!

Hello! Late viewer here! Just watched the last episode and a shame to see Michael go just as i was starting to like him but can understand why he went. Lots of wonderful Noel bits in this one. He kisses Alice! Just what i've always dreamt of! A pp says he is so sweet with them and that's right. He's wacky but not overly so. He's just perfect.

I think this has been the best episode so far and the bakers' characters are really coming out now. Also there were some great comical moments, eg. Michael looks at where Paul was watching from the corner and says "Is he still there?" Grin and then was it him or Henry who gets the icey stare from Paul and says "was that wrong?!" Think it was Michael. The look of terror on his face!

They do a good job of building Paul's character as the terrifying lord of baking which suits him.

LemonRedwood · 11/10/2019 18:19

That's what I'm thinking of VetOnCall!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/10/2019 19:40

Just caught up Numbers

I hope your "Guffy Eggs of All Nations" were delicious!

Will Brexit affect these international culinary delights, do you think?

I do hope not!

LemonRedwood · 11/10/2019 20:44

Michael's appearing to be a bit of a natural talk show guest. Really natural

LemonRedwood · 11/10/2019 20:44

Posted too soon...
Natural and relaxed in front of the camera

ppeatfruit · 12/10/2019 17:21

Pru looks decidedly unimpressed with Paul's pie.

OkayGo · 15/10/2019 20:26

It's a shame because I've got Rosie in the sweepstake I'm in but I knew that she wouldn't make it to the end

ArseDarkly · 15/10/2019 20:29
