Alright racers!

Who's seen the new trailer and eagerly anticipating the launch? Any early favourites?

I've heard rumours it's going to be stupidly good, up there with s5/6 of the original version.

@TeachesOfPeaches

U.K. drag is traditionally mostly comedy, it comes out of pantomime and music hall. Very different to slick Vegas drag. They are just different

1wokeuplikethis · 25/10/2019 23:36

Massive drag race fan here and I was so excited for the UK version but feel completely underwhelmed: shit prizes, shit themes, lack of humour... the USA drag competitors are so polished and on their game, I like some of the UK competitors but I can’t believe that this is the best they could find, did they even audition or just pick people off Instagram?

You’ve got people like viv and Davina and even crystal with incredible runway looks next to ones who look like a sack of spuds. Can’t stand big gob bagga. I think the viv will win but I don’t warm to him at all. Blu is an unpleasant little jellyfish.

I like Davina the best.

Even the judges have been tepid. I can’t put my finger on it, but watching an episode is like being at an awkward party where it’s meant to be fun and jolly but it’s actually flat as a week old fart.

I don’t think they’ll bother making a second series. It’s like the earliest series of the original drag race and considering how far it’s come, why is the UK version so bloody naff? Maybe it will really pick up in the last couple of weeks.......

Peanutbatter · 27/10/2019 12:38

Every time I watch Cheryl Hole in the VT (not as drag), I keep thinking he looks like Villanelle, when she had those crazed looks on her face...

I can't stand Davina out of character, even though she seems like a great performer. Her laugh makes my skin crawl and she seems really bitchy.

I like The Vivienne best.

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 27/10/2019 17:31

Funnily enough I'm the other way round - really like Divina but find The Vivienne arrogant and bitchy. Very talented, but hard to like.

cathyandclare · 27/10/2019 17:34

I'm with you Idontknowhowtohelpher -love Divina, like Crystal, can appreciate The Vivienne's talent but find her unlikeable. I think she'll win though.

covetingthepreciousthings · 27/10/2019 19:02

I also like Divina, and would think that both The Vivienne and Bagga are probably the bitchiest two in the group.

ElspethFlashman · 27/10/2019 22:44

I think Davina is just too passive aggressive for me. She's becoming quite brittle and it's not a good look. I wasn't impressed with her whole "nobody's going to interrupt me" speech, it's an ensemble, people all talk at once! You should sit in our tearoom at work, no one ever gets to complete a sentence!

Viv to win. I've never seen anyone do Trump better. And she's good on the runway too.

Bagga is shite. Her runway is appalling! Her outfits are terrible, and her whole shtick is gurning at the camera like Les Dawson.

And she looks far cuter without makeup than with it on, which doesn't say much for her makeup skills.

Anyone else shocked that Davina was so ignorant about Northern Ireland??! She really didnt know?

2Rebecca · 28/10/2019 14:01

Bagga got asked more questions than the others which was unfair and his space outfit was boring. Davina was rubbish as Julia Childs who was too boring. Should have had 2 Maggies. Had no idea who Rue was.
Geri is looking great. Still don't like Alan Carr

zinrepus · 28/10/2019 14:52

I feel like Bagga just camps up her British-ness to the (American) judges and they just eat it up. Just watch her say "Bloody 'ell" and "much be'er" over and over again. And I'm worried that's going to take her to the top 3. Angry

I was also a bit bummed to see where the queens came from. They work really hard on Drag Race to get folks from all over the US and they somehow didn't get one Scottish queen? It's not like there's no drag up there...

The Vivienne is a great performer, but it really rubs me the wrong way to see a 26 year old mouthing off about how nobody in the competition can teach her anything...

And my money is on them editing Davina to look thick about NI. Producers saying, "Hey, can you keep that conversation going?" or Davina realising it was an opportunity for Blue to talk about it, then commenting after the fact that's it's messed up about equality in the UK as a whole...

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 28/10/2019 15:52

The editing is always going to be done to "tell a story", isn't it? And we'll never know if some of the other queens had good lines in Snatch game but weren't shown because The Vivienne and Bagga were even better.

2Rebecca · 28/10/2019 16:17

Is it normal in the Snatch game for them to sometimes impersonate men too? Not that I'm against sex equality in insulting behaviour but it turns it in to an impersonation contest not a drag queen contest.
I still think you can dominate the catwalk competitions by throwing money at your costume.

RageAgainstBojosHalloween · 28/10/2019 16:17

Bagga only has my sympathy if it is the case that none of them get any budget or help and she is solely reliant on her own stuff or what others lend out. Clearly if that's the case she is at an immediate disadvantage as has less than her competitors? There was someone similarly scraping by on US version, have forgotten her name. It just doesn't feel like an even playing field if someone has more gowns and cash to invest even if they have been performing longer.

RageAgainstBojosHalloween · 28/10/2019 16:18

X-post Becca I agree

ElspethFlashman · 28/10/2019 16:19

Yeah there have been blokes impersonated before. Little Richard was a highlight.

ElspethFlashman · 28/10/2019 16:21

BTW,

What the actual fuck was up with Geri Halliwell? Has she actually turned into Kate Middleton now??! She was bizarre.

TricklBOO · 28/10/2019 16:26

I didn't like Blu's Mary Berry. It was just smutty for the sake of it without being funny.

RageAgainstBojosHalloween · 28/10/2019 17:01

Ooh yes. Little Richard was hilarious. Loved it.

Haworthia · 28/10/2019 23:08

Haha, yes, she’s quite the social climber these days. She married an exceedingly rich man and has a toddler son called Monty Grin

Lilopup · 29/10/2019 07:06

Love drag race and really looked forward to the uk series but I've been a little underwhelmed so far, hopefully they get a better budget on a different channel for a second series.
Viv's impersonation if Trump was hilarious but the rest were a little disappointing for saying it was supposed to have been one of the best snatch games ever.

I like Cheryl but I wish she would stop trying to be Alyssa Edwards with the tongue popping and mannerisms.

Geri was also cringe worthy last week, I would have loved to have seen Paul O'Grady as a guest host instead.

JorisBonson · 31/10/2019 20:56

Waaaaay too much crying in this episode.

Stellaris22 · 01/11/2019 06:32

I'm much preferring the UK version to the later US series. Far too much product placement and shameless promotion of RuPauls products and songs, there isn't the soul of the first few series before it got successful. I'm liking the comraderie whereas the US version is very mean spirited at times.

TeachesOfPeaches · 01/11/2019 07:23

I think it's getting better. Loved the underdog team winning the challenge and Davina's jockey outfit

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 01/11/2019 19:03

Divina was just brilliant. I do felt she should have won on her own, rather than it be a group win though. I adore her.

Not surprised Viv was in the bottom. I have to say although she's unbelievably talented she comes across way too arrogant and abrasive for me. She's funny and I enjoy watching her but I can see how she rubs people up the wrong way.

Agree with you all that Davina's outfit was incredible. Didn't like Baga's again. Can't help but feel it's a bit fixed in her direction.

But also agree on the camaraderie, the girls are so so funny and I love how in love they are with each other.
