GoT is actually disgusting, isn't it?

In what way can it be described as 'entertainment'?

I seriously, don't understand why people happily sit down to watch the carnage, the immolation, the screaming children.

What is wrong with people?

Snowdrop I know I'm in the minority. I only have to look around at the disintegration of civilised societal norms in my country to recognise that.

But it won't stop me calling out how disgusting GoT is, here.

The stuff I 'don't like' is where people feel entertained by such, in most normal human societies, things regarded as disgusting

Apparently not. Shown in 170 countries, like I said before.

Miljah · 13/05/2019 21:34

Red, no, OP's answering responses. No 'where did the OP go?' here,

You can't have it both ways.

All this hand wringing about how violent and deensitised we are is from people who just don't understand a basic fact. We live in a MUCH less violent fun and aggressive world than we used to. And yes that includes all the awful stuff that is happening in wars all over the world. People in all.ovwr the world history led painful, violent unpleasant lives for the most part with very few exceptions.

Now we have some parts of the world ( admittedly not enough of them) where life is much less violent and much more peaceful

Attendance at real.life ( not made up in TV) executions.and watching people being burned alive and tortured was considered normal, even entertainment of sorts.

TV is nothing compared to that. I think humans have always had a fascination for horror/ violence. In this country we are privileged to we watch it on screens instead of in reality

I.don:t personally like horror/ gore much (I am pretty squeamish} but I can understand that some perfectly normal people.do.enjoy it and I don't think I am superior for not liking stuff.like that.

What a bore!*

Miljah · 13/05/2019 21:35

Val- doesn't make it 'OK', makes it popular.

List those countries and let's find out how many are 'OK' with practices we should find abhorrent.

BlackPrism · 13/05/2019 21:36

Hmm I also faint if someone else is hurt in real life and I see it... I just don't when the person being 'burnt alive' is covered in prosthetics and is not really on fire. I think you're struggling to get that people can separate fact and fiction. Also we're not all getting some weird sadistic pleasurable thrill from it... we're horrified by the thought too but that's the point - it makes you feel extreme emotions.

Walkaround · 13/05/2019 21:36

Miljah - you clearly haven't watched much of it if you think it is desensitising. The violence and debauchery are supposed to repel and disgust and people continue watching it because they expect the characters who are repelled by it like they are, and not corrupted by power, to put a stop to the depraved and corrupted in the end and try to repair some of the awful harm done. The violence and debauchery is based on the worst of European history, anyway, not entirely invented - human beings have occasionally behaved truly despicably through history and we have to hope that this can be overcome in the end, even if history occasionally repeats itself.

Torsz · 13/05/2019 21:37

Interested to know if it's just tv fiction that offends the op or if only terrible people read books about gore too...

Mumble29 · 13/05/2019 21:38

it's not real love, people were getting burnt alive by a fucking dragon. Do get over yourself.

Miljah · 13/05/2019 21:39

bumbling tho I won't be drawn into a 'I'm superior' discussion, you have actually made a valid point.

Is it in the human psyche, once the ability to witness, first hand, beheadings, crucifixions, stonings, burnings, to want to seek it out via TV fiction?

Are people who are drawn to this stuff actually just responding to a baser human instinct?

OP posts:
MallySally · 13/05/2019 21:39

You realise it's loosely based on the War of the Roses? Do you think that was pleasant, then?

I'd much rather watch something like Game of Thrones than the other drivel that is put out there on television in the form of soaps, Jeremy Kyle and real-life crime crap.

People enjoy different things. Why don't you just let them?

Miljah · 13/05/2019 21:41

Mally -um- the War of the Roses was real.

GoT is gratuitous violence made to titivate those prone to respond.

OP posts:
MallySally · 13/05/2019 21:42

So don't watch it. It's a very simple concept that you don't seem to be able to grasp.

Valarmorghulisss · 13/05/2019 21:46

I studied Macbeth and Hamlet at school when I was 16. Perhaps my parents should've reported my English lit teacher to the authorities? They're so full of violence! Maybe they warped my mind!
Sorry, you're being ridiculous...

BlackPrism · 13/05/2019 21:47

Life, death, power, sex, love. Literally the basis for almost all human entertainment. So of course it's a basic instinct to enjoy GOT

Miljah · 13/05/2019 21:48

Mally, I can also 'choose' not to watch 18 year olds being paid to 'act' as the 'victims' in Pornhub productions, involving, S&M, bondage, real physical harm, whipping, subservience, degradation. And so on.

That's all stuff that's legal, but I can 'choose' not to watch.

But I, personally, find much of that abhorrent (know how many teenage girls thing anal is part of the package, so 'normalised' has that become on PH?...)

I can 'choose' not to watch a lot of stuff, but that doesn't mean I'm OK with quite a few of my fellow travellers finding the grotesqueries on GoT entertaining.

OP posts:
BlackPrism · 13/05/2019 21:49

Yes but the actors in GOT aren't consensually being fucked or burned to death are they... they're acting.

Porn stars are consenting to the actual act being done to them, not pretending.

Very bloody different

Bettercallsaul1 · 13/05/2019 21:50

You're talking about the latest episode, OP - which was, as you say, full of carnage. It was by far the most horrific episode in the series and deliberately so, to make a point about one of the main characters who had "gone bad", echoing the mad violence of her father a generation before. However throughout the scenes of destruction, there was a strong moral compass in the form of the main characters who were (like the viewer) horrified at the turn of events (which was the opposite of what had been planned - an acceptance of the city's surrender with minimum violence) and who tried to help innocent people, especially children.

The whole series was about political dominance between various kingdoms and there were inevitably some gory battles at certain points. However the conflict mainly consisted of political plotting and manoeuvring and a lot of the story's appeal came from character development and conflicts of interest. In this it is very similar to many other long-running "historical" dramas such as The Vikings, The Tudors and many others.

Ontheboardwalk · 13/05/2019 21:50

miljah I like game of thrones you like antiques roadshow. There is nothing more to this conversation than this.

You watch the telly you like, I’ll watch the telly I like. No need to be clutching your pearls. We are all good

MallySally · 13/05/2019 21:52

You sound really boring, OP.

Ontheboardwalk · 13/05/2019 21:52

Eh what’s pornhub got to do with the tv show game of thrones?

Miljah · 13/05/2019 21:52

Boardwalk- no, we're not 'all good'.

You choose to watch this nastiness as entertainment. I call it out.

GoT shouldn't be on public access TV.

OP posts:
peachgreen · 13/05/2019 21:52

I'm fascinated by your use of bold, italics and single quotation marks for emphasis, OP. Are you following any consistent rules about which ones you use in which circumstances or is it just random?

Back on topic, Game of Thrones. I don't like watching any kind of horror so it's not for me. But that doesn't make me better than anyone else.

Miljah · 13/05/2019 21:53

Boardwalk you didn't read what I said about PH, did you?
