In what way can it be described as 'entertainment'?

I seriously, don't understand why people happily sit down to watch the carnage, the immolation, the screaming children.

What is wrong with people?

Im a nurse, does that mean I shouldn't be allowed to play video games either?

Oh shit, I really shouldn't catch those monsters in balls, what an hideous human I am.

hellenbackagen · 13/05/2019 22:08

Well there is an off button??!

If you don't like watching something then - erm- don't?

MallySally · 13/05/2019 22:08

I do indeed play war based computer games. Online, with some of the other teachers, and the TA in my class. Great fun.

Why isn't playing computer games "normal"?

nocoolnamesleft · 13/05/2019 22:08

Reality TV programmes disturb me. Real crime TV programmes disturb me. Gritty reality TV programmes disturb me. Clearly fantasy? Far less so.

McHelenz · 13/05/2019 22:09

@Madeleine I wish I had killed an ice zombie king...

Miljah · 13/05/2019 22:09

OK, given that it's gone 10, and I have to do my HCP job in the morning, I'm leaving this now.

Saying that so I don't see any 2am posts 'WHERE HAS THE OP GONE?' tomorrow.

It has been interesting, if a little disturbing.

OP posts:
Geraniumpink · 13/05/2019 22:09

It’s fiction and this type of thing has entertained people for centuries. I am the sort who can’t watch or read anything with much violence in it at all - I get very anxious and get nightmares. But I appreciate that others find it all completely fascinating.
For myself I am loving Brooklyn 99 at the moment. Each to their own.

BertrandRussell · 13/05/2019 22:09

It’s very entertaining how cross GoT fans get when you point out the gratuitous violence and pornographic sensibility. Why don’t they just say “Yep. Got me bang to rights. I love that stuff!” But no, you have to go on about he historical accuracy, they politics, the philosophy........It’s almost as if you have to justify yourselves for watching it.

hellenbackagen · 13/05/2019 22:10

Eek I'm a police officer.

I find children trying to fire bomb my
Colleagues a bit more disturbing than a work of fiction tbh.

But each to their own eh.

Ces6 · 13/05/2019 22:11

I agree OP. I would like to watch it but the violence puts me off. (And yes I know not everyone agrees). The other day there was a thread here on Bodies - another programme that I couldn't watch because of the violence. I just find it upsetting. Like a pp, I have OCD though so maybe that is why. Dh has no problem watching violence.

Miljah · 13/05/2019 22:11

But, I can't help myself, so many of you seem far more invested in your delight and right, in watching GoT than I was expecting!

OP posts:
MallySally · 13/05/2019 22:11

Not really, Bertrand. I have complex PTSD and can't watch anything with hospitals, modern violence and rape, abuse etc in it.

I enjoy Game of Thrones because it's complete fantasy, y'know with the dragons and all.

Everyone is different.

hoxtonbabe · 13/05/2019 22:12

Im not sure why it’s only GOT bring targeted here. Someone upthread mentioned walking dead, we can also add true blood to that. I can’t say I’m desensitised due to watching these programmes,

I still find myself boiling with rage when I think about the stories my dad would tell me about living in Africa early 1900s and the cruelty inflicted by the colonialists that were supposedly showing the native savages the correct and proper way. When I see photos of slaves being lyched from a tree and the charred bodies if they burned them after or the lash marks to the point of tearing off strips of skin across the back of a man or woman that didn’t pick that cotton quota quick enough or when I see the many many photos of children’s chopped off hands or feet in the Congo whilst Under the rule of leopold of Belgium for not meeting their ivory and gold quota.

No amount of watching GOT will ever desensitise me to the real life cruelty that has happened or is happening

McHelenz · 13/05/2019 22:12

Im not cross - I didn't think this episode was the best.

What pisses me off is the OP's attitude where she's better than everyone because she is a health care professional from what I gather...and well travelled. She's just a bit up herself in her replies to people.

But then she is a troll so...

C8H10N4O2 · 13/05/2019 22:12

As a teacher, do you really shoot down planes in 'war based' games?

Haha, quality trolling OP - quality.

MadeleineMaxwell · 13/05/2019 22:12

@McHelenz indeed, for then you would be a fucking awesome mini ninja Grin

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 13/05/2019 22:13

The Call Of Duty franchise alone has sold more than 250,000,000 copies so, yes I think that counts as fairly normal OP.

Ontheboardwalk · 13/05/2019 22:13

miljah but it’s not on public access TV you have to pay for Sky then actually have to choose to watch the programme.

It’s not clockwork orange where they force you to watch the programme.

I’m not forced to watch antiques roadshow. You shouldn’t be concerned about people choosing to watch game of thrones

McHelenz · 13/05/2019 22:13

Also, someone learnt how to use italics and its cute.

GottaGetUp · 13/05/2019 22:17

But, I can't help myself, so many of you seem far more invested in your delight and right, in watching GoT than I was expecting!

What did you expect? It’s an incredibly popular tv show. And you just called everyone who likes it disgusting.

hellenbackagen · 13/05/2019 22:17

Just watched again....it an amazing cinematic wonderful commentary on good vs evil....when did the job you do mean you're censored on what you are allowed to watch?

hellenbackagen · 13/05/2019 22:19

Op
Bonkers.

If
She is
Allowed swathing judgemental troll bollocks then so am I!

Shaggydog99 · 13/05/2019 22:19

I never 'liked' The Big Bang theory. And yet it is a very popular program. There are 'people' who laugh at bad jokes. The fact that I walk past these 'people' in the street every day makes me shudder.

hellenbackagen · 13/05/2019 22:20

This thread is now
Officially bonkers. The Big Bang theory???? Really?

RedDogsBeg · 13/05/2019 22:22

You are rabid about GoT, OP and insisting it shouldn't be on TV in any form so you are deciding to censor what people should watch, anything else fall foul of your strict guidelines?

The Walking Dead?

The production of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus?

What would pass your censorship?
