GoT is actually disgusting, isn't it?

In what way can it be described as 'entertainment'?

I seriously, don't understand why people happily sit down to watch the carnage, the immolation, the screaming children.

What is wrong with people?

That said: I skipped the episode where Stannis does the Agamemnon thing, because although it’s great plotting in terms of everyone’s character arc, I wasn’t personally prepared to watch it. Everyone has their personal limits and preferences, and if someone who works in A&E doesn’t want to watch burn victims in their downtime then only an idiot would try to persuade them to change their mind.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 13/05/2019 20:57

I haven't watched a single secondof GOT but from what I've heard about it I suspect yanbu, op.

I can't be entertained by extreme graphic violence and sexual violence - hence my lack of interest.

RedRiverShore · 13/05/2019 20:58

Why start a thread about something you don’t like, you don’t have to watch it if you don’t like it, it’s not like it is on BBC, so easy to avoid.

PristineCondition · 13/05/2019 20:58

You know it's not real right?

maddiemookins16mum · 13/05/2019 21:01

I love it, but then I know it’s not real. There have been hundreds and thousands of films, shows etc made over the years involving violence, sex, kiddie’s screaming etc.

Yes there is sex and violence, it's true, particularly in the first series. And yes it does have some incredibly difficult to watch moments, that's also true. However it also has fantastic characters and storylines that have built up over many years. A lot of it is about how these characters deal with the awful things they've endured and grow into amazing strong people. THATS the appeal of it. THATS why it's got millions and millions of fans. A bit of sex and violence alone would not keep so many people entranced for so many years, it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to work that out.

PrtScn · 13/05/2019 21:05

I tried to give it a chance, watched 3 episodes of the first season but thought it was shite. I usually like fantasy like shows with dragons etc in, but couldn’t take to GoT.

TheInvestigator · 13/05/2019 21:08

This isn't new. It's not our society that's caused it. The Romans has gladiators. The Aztecs had blood sport (quite literally). People like watching that stuff.

But... I really havnt enjoyed this season of GOT. I loved the politics, the sneaky plays, the backstabbing, the history of a fantasy world. I was hoping we'd get back to more of that once the night king was gone, but it's just been gore and violence with no substance.

likeridingabike · 13/05/2019 21:09

It's telly, watch it or don't watch it.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 13/05/2019 21:10

Pmsl at the defensiveness.

Eggshellnutmeg · 13/05/2019 21:11

It’s horrific, I can’t watch it.

Valarmorghulisss · 13/05/2019 21:11

If you don't like it, don't watch it. I think reality tv shows like Love Island and Towie are shite, so I don't watch them or comment on threads about them.

tabbiemoo · 13/05/2019 21:11

I don’t get it at all. Seen about 10 seconds of it and that was enough.

Oblomov19 · 13/05/2019 21:13

I don't understand why you don't get it. Lots of periods of both history and entertainment is not pleasant. WW1, WW2, any other war. Auschwitz isnt pleasant.

Miljah · 13/05/2019 21:14

The fact that it's not real yet people choose to settle down on the sofa to watch it, as entertainment is perhaps what shocks me most.

As for the fact I don't have to watch it (though it's 'on' because of my living arrangements- which are pretty normal, as it seems watching this visceral gore is 'normal', apparently)- I don't have to watch violent, exploitative porn. But I know I walk among people who do. Whose choices I'd also find disgusting.

And yes, I will sometimes subject myself to real life, harrowing stuff on TV because I know I need to understand it. But that anyone would eagerly turn on to GoT, knowing what they're likely to see, I find disturbing.

Why the odd use of the italics OP

overthehorizon · 13/05/2019 21:16

Oh do give over!

You're being very, very silly.

It's a story. A really gruesome, scary story. People have loved that sort of thing for centuries.

mollysshadow · 13/05/2019 21:17

It's bloody brilliant

Ilikeanimalsmorethanpeople · 13/05/2019 21:17

I watched the first episode until the brother and sister started to have sex...that was enough.

I just don't get it but then there are probably plenty of things I watch that other people don't get

I will fully believe a man in an iron suit, a 100 year old soldier and a Norse God can save the world...but dragons and people fighting for a throne...nah Hmm

Miljah · 13/05/2019 21:18

By and large, it's my understanding that 'Love Island' and 'Towie' don't portray the sexual violence, violation, gore and immolation of screaming children that GoT portrays?

Have your mind turned to mush by the former as much as you like (tho, why hasn't Love Island been pulled up following the suicides of participants??); but regarding the horrors, the stuff of nightmares portrayed on GoT- I believe it plays a part in desensitising us to actual suffering, because we can tell ourselves 'It's not real'. And wow, the characterisation was amazing....

OP posts:
Cherrysoup · 13/05/2019 21:19

So people shouldn’t make programmes with death, gore, blood? Get off, luv! Some people like the horror genre. 🤷‍♀️

I’m currently watching a programme about Palestine, where Israeli forces are shooting men in the leg for trying to access a certain area. Should we ban all such programmes? It’s pretty horrific watching the men go down.

Miljah · 13/05/2019 21:19

overthehorizon third degree burns aren't 'silly'.....

OP posts:
Ontheboardwalk · 13/05/2019 21:19

I haven’t watched a single episode of Antiques Roadshow but I suspect you are right and it should be banned for using my license fee (yes I'm forced to pay it for great British menu) because I believe I don’t want to watch it.

Don’t watch something you have to pay to watch. It’s completely your choice

Valarmorghulisss · 13/05/2019 21:20

Why pick specifically on this show when there are countless other examples of films, tv shows, plays and books with at least the same level of violence?
