Bros : After the Screaming Stops

Has anyone else watched this? It’s on the BBC iPlayer, and I watched it this morning. It’s a documentary that explores the brothers’ time in the band and a bit about what they’ve done since the split. Weirdly, the third member of Bros, Craig, was airbrushed out - not mentioned or even referenced at all. It mostly focussed on a come back concert that they performed at the O2.

In my opinion, neither brother came across particularly well - they both have huge egos and want to be the ‘boss’ in the band. They’ve spent most of the last 25 years in the States, and take themselves way too seriously.

I did enjoy it, but, probably, for the wrong reasons - it was cringeworthy and a bit of a car crash. Would be interested in hearing what others thought of it.

It's like a spoof documentary. It got plenty of comedy writers taking notes I'm sure.

WhiteDust · 30/12/2018 12:30

Seriously though, having given this far too much thought...

Matt comes across as the louder, more dominant brother on the surface but I'm not buying it.
He seems very insecure and can't cope when Luke teases or criticises him.
Luke struggles with his ego and cant cope when he feels like he is being overshadowed by Matt.
Luke's frustration is (mis) directed at Matt who doesn't understand why his brother is angry with him or why Luke is trying to bring him down.
Luke's behaviour towards Matt is very subtle and comes from his own desire to dominate.

LardLizard · 30/12/2018 12:32

Surely they must be cringing at themselves

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 30/12/2018 14:52

I watched the rest of this yesterday after watching the first 15minutes the day before and laughing at Matt's song about not wanting to be a cleaner Grin despite them all being Kings HmmI actually began to warm to them even though Matt is a div - I loved the strop about the pyros! wanted them to

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 30/12/2018 14:56

Sorry posted too soon! Hmm One year old DD thought she was being helpful! Grin
I really wanted them to do well and succeed with the show. I enjoyed the little insights into their lives and it was sad in parts. That said I was really laughing at the "good thing there were bubbles" bit.

Hisnamesblaine · 30/12/2018 15:49

Wasn't there one about chocolate in the box?

PurpleNailVarnish · 30/12/2018 16:07

Looking back at the 80s footage Matt has the attention and the solo record deal when they split.

Subsequently they are both successful but despite Matt's Vegas residency Luke now has far greater wealth and success as an actor/producer.

I thought that Matt was used to being adored and Luke's success now smarts with Matt. For his part Luke was not going to take second place anymore and he was going to stand up for himself.

cavycavy · 30/12/2018 19:19

Ricky Gervais could have written it.

Magicstar1 · 30/12/2018 19:37

I watched it today...Matt has morphed into David Brent!!!

FogCutter · 30/12/2018 20:38

Watching it now, blimey so much passive aggressive behaviour and sibling rivalry going on!

Think they are both a bit thick tbh.

PawneeParksDept · 30/12/2018 20:41

Absolute TV gold

The stuff with their Mum and sister was heartbreaking but the rest of it was Partridge level brilliance.

I did wonder about Matt's mental health though

dannydyerismydad · 30/12/2018 23:00

Is it really Matt, or one of Lee Nelson's spoof characters? Hard to tell.

That was BRILLIANT. For all the wrong reasons.

DameSquashalot · 30/12/2018 23:15

The bits about their mum and sister were emotional. Matt didn't come across well. Luke is still carrying lots of baggage.

"I'm a London boy. Big Ben, Embankment, cab drivers"

Loved the quote about the bath and bubbles, HOME, Stevie Wonder and not being superstitious.

Some brilliant stuff. Very Spinal Tap/The Office.

chopchopchill · 31/12/2018 08:15

"I'm a London boy. Big Ben, Embankment, cab drivers"

Hahah I forgot about that bit! Embankment! Sounds like a list only someone who has never been to London could reel off.

Rememory · 31/12/2018 09:19

I warmed to them by the end too. I wondered if they are 'legally obligated' not to talk about Craig.

OliviaStabler · 31/12/2018 10:00

Craig has his own successful career so I am sure he just said please don't include me especially as he wanted nothing to do with the reunion.

lardass88 · 31/12/2018 11:55

I'm watching this now.. Matt reminds me of Paul Danan ... he's toe curlingly cringy and you don't know what's going to come out of his mouth.

ChristineBaskets · 31/12/2018 12:02

I need to know if Matt ever started his conkers petition.

lardass88 · 31/12/2018 12:31

@ChristineBaskets that was hilarious "it's the biggest problem" 😂

PuppyMonkey · 31/12/2018 12:37

This was the best thing on telly all Xmas. So many classic bits, but the part where Matt was talking about a security guard photographing him asleep in the bath and selling pix to paparazzi - it would have been quite shocking but then he had to add: “fortunately there were bubbles.”

I couldn’t stop Grin

PuppyMonkey · 31/12/2018 12:39

Oops, thread hadn’t loaded properly, I see lots of others have already mentioned that bit. Blush

Theromanempire · 31/12/2018 12:43

I watched it and was fascinated by it. Definitely think Luke came over much better than Matt did and yy to whoever said that Luke appears to be stuck in an 80's timewarp.

They have definitely been airbrushed out of pop history as you never hear any of their songs on the radio - it is like they never existed.

I watched an interview with the producer/director (not sure which) on Saturday about it - he said that they did interview Craig as part of the documentary but chose not to use it (and he did say that they opted to have limited 'talking heads') as the material from the twins was too good to leave out. He also said that at the part when Matt was getting on the plane and commenting about how British Airways were so welcoming and then they made him wait as they weren't ready - he was behind the camera and had to try so so hard not to burst out laughing at his face!

Am I the only cynical one who thought that the fans at the airport were set up by the documentary team? Not saying that they weren't fans but had been primed about when they would be arriving?

I have to say that I did find it heartbreaking that their relationship was so broken - as the mum of 2 boys (not twins), I would hate for them to end up like that.

Theromanempire · 31/12/2018 12:45

Sorry - Matt appears to be stuck in an 80's timewarp Blush

EdWinchester · 31/12/2018 12:49

There’s lots of mirth on Twitter about it.

Someone pointed out the Botox. Matt clearly has a face full of it and Luke has none.

Parques · 31/12/2018 12:52

Best thing on TV over Christmas! TV gold! Unintentionally absolutely hilarious! GrinGrinGrin
