Is anyone planning on watching this?

I read the books and found them compelling but in a trashy kind of way Twilight meets Fifty Shades via witchcraft.

Not sure about the casting but I'm absolutely giving it a go tonight

There was fire, too, if that is more your thing.

It is trashy, but I need some relaxing rubbish in my life.

cushioncovers · 20/10/2018 15:22

Just watched this weeks episode. It was corny but enjoyable

sparklelike · 20/10/2018 17:07

I am hoping they make a series 2 - the back in time to the 16th century is great, I don’t know how much of a hit this has been in general?

ShinyElena · 20/10/2018 19:52

Somehow I think they hit the right demographic. Twilight for the Fifty Shades age group.

I'd love to see the next 16th century too sparkle, too. But so far only the 2 main characters are like how I imagined them in the books. Show Marcus I could not warm to, and Show Baldwin is not scary enough (too reasonable). I am worried they will ruin Gallowglass for me and I would not forgive that.

CandleIit · 20/10/2018 19:54

Bundling through jeans! I don't bloody think so!!!! Maybe through a thin sheet of Cotten or silk. But jeans? She'd have to have an enormous clot.

Haven't RTFL yet - catching up on the last two episodes. Apologies if it has been mentioned already.

VforVienetta · 20/10/2018 20:35

I haven't read the books, so it's all new to me - would you say it's worth reading them now?

Also, thought Matthew came across as a bit of a twat this episode - throwing his weight around with the Knight thing etc. All rationality seems to have leapt out of the window.
Glad Meridiana is out of her box tho.

VforVienetta · 20/10/2018 20:39

PS re jean bundling Candlelit, upthread thethirdofhername suggested Matthew had magic fingers, but maybe Diana has magic bits...

ShinyElena · 20/10/2018 21:01

Vienetta Don't read the books if you expect rationality Grin Not bad though.

TatterdemalionAspie · 20/10/2018 21:04

Ooh, haven't read the whole thread, as haven't seen last night's episode yet, but I'm very excited to have found 'my people' to moon over Matthew Goode appreciate the finer points of the series with. Wink

Love love love Mr Goode, and some great other acting in it too, but fuck me, the script is clunky and the aussie lead is awful! I've rarely seen anyone so expressionless and wooden. Very pretty to look at, but that's about it. Shame, because there is almost some lovely chemistry between her and Matthew Goode. Beautifully filmed, though.

Will finish the last bit of the thread (from 9pm yesterday!) later.

Have been listening to Lissie's version of 'Go Your Own Way' on repeat for days. She also does a gorgeous cover of Nothing Else Matters, incidentally.

Amortentia · 20/10/2018 21:16

I remember reading the first book years ago and thought it was fairly enjoyable. So far I’m loving this, just the right level of fluff and beautiful styling. What is that shade of blue she keeps wearing?

MymbleClement · 20/10/2018 21:23

Teal? It is rather lovely on her.

Yes you'd think they'd have had a rope to help her out the well! And wasn't that Sophia Miles playing her mother?

Not ashamed to say I wish they'd have a proper shag.

sparklelike · 20/10/2018 22:50

I agree with you on Baldwin shinyelena that actor is almost cuddly, no where near the menace required. I do think the locations and scenery are lovely though, I’m definitely enjoying it.

Might enjoy a rewatch of the full series next time dh is away as it finishes next episode doesn’t it!

sparklelike · 20/10/2018 22:53

Yy on the shag front - OTOH there is fantastic chemistry between them.

PawneeParksDept · 21/10/2018 01:17

It's weird because I knew the books were naff but in a GREAT way

The thing about this is that Matthew Goode is basically carrying it with some assist from Teresa.

Despite being beautifully shot, the rest of the dialogue and acting is pretty poor, bad Doctor Who episode poor, it's hard to decide who's worst out of many candidates

Though I enjoy it as froth, I do worry about its future because I don't think it's response and audience figures will justify what must have been large costs.

bakingdemon · 21/10/2018 08:55

Does anyone know if it's doing well in the US? That will probably decide if it gets a second season.

Too many of the supporting cast are terrible - the young female vampire in Venice who's obsessed with Matthew and Miriam in Matthew's lab the chief culprits. Agree that Marcus isn't great either.

I don't remember the witch's head in a box from the books, but I read them a few years ago.

I didn't think much of Satu's interrogation technique, shouting "tell me your secrets!" repeatedly. I like that she's one of the more complex characters - frees the boxwitch from slavery, chafing against Knox but also torturing another witch.

VforVienetta · 21/10/2018 15:21

I'm enjoying the visuals, it's beautifully shot.
TP is a little blank at times, but I LOVE how un-glam she is - realistic woman on screen shocker! Lots of her in her T-shirt/pjs, and some great wardrobe choices with those long jackets and shirts. Just makes a nice change from the heroine being pretty-pretty or overtly sexy all the time.

ShinyElena · 22/10/2018 18:16

I do not think Meridiana (witch in the box) was in the books, was she? Gerbert hardly featured.
In the books we saw everything filtered through Matthew's memories / experiences, so all the other ancient characters felt deranged. When realistically, Matthew is more dangerous than most of them I guess.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 22/10/2018 22:00

I've just binge watched the 6 episodes..... just wow!! Such amazing filming and locations, and Mathew Goode is mesmerising. I thought it was a complete box set and could cry at having to wait to watch more. Not sure about the female lead though, she seems a little "wooden" - I've not seen her in anything else to know who she is, sorry.

I ordered the book today from Amazon Grin I really hope there is more after this series, I assume from reading on Amazon it is a trilogy.

PawneeParksDept · 22/10/2018 22:31

Yes @LizzieBennettDarcy it is a trilogy and there's a fourth stand alone.

The books are better, obviously, great username!

OP posts:
HellonHeels · 22/10/2018 23:52

Meridiana was mentioned in the books as a witch he kept in thrall with his blood. In the books Gerbert also had a (bronze?) head in a box that was an oracle. I think the TV version has conflated the two.

ShinyElena · 23/10/2018 08:43

HellonHeels Thank you. I must have not paid attention anybody else but Matthew Blush

4th book?! Off to Amazon.

TatterdemalionAspie · 23/10/2018 10:51

I'll just leave this here...

I could watch him all day.

sparklelike · 23/10/2018 10:59

i could listen to that voice all day...he has such a great voice

cropcirclesinthefields · 23/10/2018 11:05

I binged this show yesterday and love it, yes it's a bit cheesy and the vegetarian vampires scream of twilight but it's good. I like the idea that there is a secret group of race leaders controlling the witches, daemons, vampires.

Unobtainable · 23/10/2018 20:24

I really enjoyed the last episode! Lots of action and some interesting developments, especially the ‘unblocking of Diana, not to mention the sight of Matthew in his pants ...
