Is anyone planning on watching this?

I read the books and found them compelling but in a trashy kind of way Twilight meets Fifty Shades via witchcraft.

Not sure about the casting but I'm absolutely giving it a go tonight

I mean they have not.

sparklelike · 14/10/2018 11:36

Yes I’m enjoying it - scenery of all kinds still amazing - I love diana’s knitwear too and I do think Lindsay Duncan has ysabeau’s character even though her age is out. It’s doing rather well on the slow burn romance front too.

DurtySarf · 14/10/2018 19:58

I cracked and bought the first book, mainly because I didn't 'get' daemons from the TV show. Have read as far as the last episode ended, and am trying to resist reading ahead before Friday.

It's interesting to compare and contrast. Having watched the show before reading the book, I do picture the characters as the actors though.

bakingdemon · 15/10/2018 08:47

"You might not like what you see". No danger of that!

Agree that this was a slow moving episode - hopefully next week will be more exciting. The books don't do a terribly good job of explaining what daemons are and why they're different from humans early on either.

sparklelike · 15/10/2018 09:38

no daemons just seem to be crazy as far as I can remember! Yes, possibly the least needed warning ever!

TheThirdOfHerName · 15/10/2018 14:29

I'm amused by the idea of MMF (Matthew's Magic Fingers).

VforVienetta · 15/10/2018 16:06

Yup, the MMF/DMV are impressive! Grin

VforVienetta · 15/10/2018 16:08

So, is 'mating' for vampires more like a marriage thing, or so they mean Matthew hasn't had sex for 1500yrs, which seems improbable, esp re the Venetian vamp's memories...

Jappydooda · 15/10/2018 16:10

Just started reading the first book - not particularly impressed so far. Hopefully it will pick up a bit.

sparklelike · 15/10/2018 17:08

Think the mating concept is borrowed from other standard schlock in the genre about the mate being the one true love (see twilight imprinting), but they definitely have other relationships.

Hmm I’m beginning to think I need to broaden my reading matter!

TheThirdOfHerName · 15/10/2018 17:45

Unmated vampires are definitely not celibate.

DurtySarf · 15/10/2018 18:00

My impression from the book is that in this context, mating is more akin to pair bonding than to the act of coitus.

DurtySarf · 15/10/2018 18:02

There also seem to be parallels drawn between vampires and wolves.

ShinyElena · 15/10/2018 21:48

Mating is the combination of true love with Catholic marriage. And extremely controlling behaviour. I mean in the book Matthew can smell Diana's feelings and every single person she has met / touched. She has to shower all the time to wash off the scents.

VforVienetta · 15/10/2018 21:53

Ew. How unpleasant for her.

I was already thinking the imbalance in their relationship was heavily in his favour - being able to read her behaviour by her heartbeat, blood flow or adrenalin output etc.
He could read her like a book.

sparklelike · 16/10/2018 07:53

Yes in the first book I wasn’t sure Matthew wasn’t a baddie - she’s important to him because she’s a powerful witch, and the book of life, it’s less clear why she needs him.

Unobtainable · 17/10/2018 10:40

"You might not like what you see". No danger of that!

Quite!

I’m really enjoying it now. The DVD is available to order for Christmas too.

MsJolly · 17/10/2018 16:01

I quite enjoy it but am a sucker for trashy tv!

costacoffeecup · 19/10/2018 14:47

It's good escapism. I don't watch much tv anymore (well I watch loads of CBeebies and my little pony but that doesn't count.) At the moment I am watching just this, bake off and Neighbours. I am not sure I should admit to that though.

PawneeParksDept · 19/10/2018 21:45

Fuck and bollocks - forgot this tonight

MymbleClement · 19/10/2018 22:56

Tonight's episode was pretty exciting I thought! Stepped things up a little. Despite shades of Milk Tray ManGrin

AdventuringThroughLife · 20/10/2018 08:06

Milk Tray Man Grin

I was beginning to quesrio n plausibility. Surely if they had "everything" as so very wealthy and a helicopter .. they'd have been able to throw in a rope...

SimpleSimonstherapist · 20/10/2018 08:31

I haven’t watched this week’s episode yet but will there be more magic?! She’s done the wind thing and the rain thing and that’s it. Too much mooning and looking moody for my liking! It’s sort of compelling trash. Wouldn’t recommend it to anyone but quite enjoy it.

PawneeParksDept · 20/10/2018 11:37

@SimpleSimonstherapist

There's more magic this week
